Title: The 71st Unorthodox Bomber Squad showing SAPP how it's done.
Post by: Beefcake on November 14, 2009, 03:47:54 AM
So tonight while helping the Knights get their horde on, members of the 71st RAF decided give these "blender" things a try. After much arguing, fighting, and use of spreadsheets, we settled on attacking a nearby base, however, we ran into yet another problem. These B38's have no bombsites so we had to pull out an old B25C to make this work. We figured the B25C was just as ugly and weighed almost as much as a B38 so it would fit nicely.

After another delay for tea and a head call, we were off!

Our B38's rattled and shed numerous parts along the runway, but they managed to get airborne. Once assured the B38's would hold together we formed up and headed to target. Along the way Krusty broke out his spreadsheets and books on how to operate the bomb release as few members of the 71st know what a bomb is....let alone how to drop one. (JK guys  :neener:)

While en route to target we practiced our formation flying.

Not bad, but I don't think SAPP would approve. Not enough smoke and no one is on fire....yet.

As the target appeared in sight I made the mistake of calling "doors open". This sent the squad into a tizzy as no one could find the bomb bay door switch.

I reformed the squad just in time to commence the bomb drop. Ahhhh sweet death. (Sadly only my bombs show in the picture, the film viewer didn't show anyone else's bomb)

Boom Boom Boom

BoomboomboomBOOMboomBoomboom

Not bad for a first attempt at this sorta thing.

As usual someone shouted "low bandit" and everyone broke formation to go kill it.

And so ended our little B38 bomber mission, with B38's tangling it up on the deck using those "gun" things.

I think this was a GREAT success as the 71st Unorthodox Bomber Squad managed to get it's B38's mostly to target, AND get their bombs off before being lit on fire.  SAPP representatives are more than welcome to contact us if you wish to learn our methods as we strive to improve survivability.  :salute

/disclaimer on
This is meant to be a humorous post designed to envoke laughter or at the very least a smile. The men of SAPP and the 71st RAF are WONDERFUL guys to fly with and be around....except when we eat beans and cabbage.  :salute
/disclaimer off

You appear to be simulating the P-3...er....B-38 Droop Snoot missions, that is fairly cool and would like to try something like that.

<S> Always good to see something besides the cookie cutter NOE raids....

Technically, when attacking towns SAPP style, torpedos should be dropped  :D

Did you guys level bomb with the 38s using the B-25 bombsight as refrence?

I know the 56th FG emloyed the use of a droop snoot P-38 to level bomb with their P-47s. The P-47s formed up on the P-38. When he let the bombs go, so did the Jugs. Proved to be ineffective though.

When Corky comes along he can say for sure, but was this one of Schilling's ideas?

great pics dude!!

a question though? in the second picture, you show a pb-38 with rather small drop tanks. i've never seen an option for anything smaller than the 150(?) gallon tanks? :noid :noid

Yep, this was a droop snoot P-38 bombing mission with the B25 acting as the reference point. I remember reading and seeing pictures of P38's level bombing like that and though it would be cool to do it at least once.

They're not drop tanks but they are highly explosive. In the hanger they're called "1000lbs bomb x 2".  :D

In all seriousness Cap1 all the P38s were carrying 2x1000lbs bombs and a few carried rockets, however, none carried drop tanks.

Engines.  RedTop wasn't aware that he had to start both of them.  He only has a single-engine rating, so flew the whole mission on one..

As far as I can understand, those engines operate pilot cooling devices located on the front part of them; little fans.  I know they work pretty well when they're turning, because I had mine stop after getting shot and I started to sweat heavily right away!

As soon as we started engines up I suddenly had a hankering for margaritas, don't know why, but maybe it was kind of like Pavlov's dog experiment or something.

Found a picture of a 435th FG P-38 with the droop snoot. Man that had to be an uncomfortable ride!

I would actually love to do this on a massive scale, maybe get all of SAPP involved along with anyone else who wants to join.

Oooh maybe we can do a "CavemanJ" style bomber mission to the new cities when they're released.

orders were a bit ... vague ... after the bombing so we got stuck in and the carnage began, everyone got some, jimmy even landed a couple, I managed to bag 4 before getting chewed up by the conveyor belt of vengeful LA7s :D

suggestions:

Have the droppers in auto level. Even the slightest pitch up/down can throw your bombs way off (mine never hit the town). Also, different-type-formations are hard to keep with the leader. Also, for best effect, have leader call out TAS while he's calibrating, so other planes can try to match. Several MPH variation will only help scatter bombs across a town better, but you don't want to be way off.

if you're doing this, you should also probably start your run almost 2 sectors out. give yourself plenty of time for yas all to get synced together.

Well if you're all perfectly synched, you're just going to waste bombs on the same stretch that the B25s have already bombed... Variation (at least, "some variation" - not too much) will only help the "carpet" part of the carpet bombing.

by "synced" i meant to the same speed and alt, so you know your drop will hit somethign besides dirt.

That was a fine first attempt.

In the future lay in a large supply of duct tape and torpedos. On rare ocassions when SAPP attacks a town, we will only use torps as that seems to make the coolest holes in the ground.
Your OTD shot seems a bit high. In the future fly closer to trees so their shadows can cool the engines.

One other point I'd like to make is the lack of chatter on 200 regarding yalls attack group moving in on the town. All attacks should be preceded by lots of chatter stating the operation heading to the predetermined base.
