Title: RngrCove terrain Released
Post by: USRanger on November 28, 2009, 08:50:33 PM
While I wait for the Offline Mission Editor to get the bugs worked out of the current version, I figured I may as well put this recently completed terrain for the missions up for download if anyone wants to check it out & critique.  Maybe it will see some life when we get private servers here in the future also. :salute

This is the updated version to the new terrain system.  Changed a bunch around & added things also.  Basically its own beast.  If you have the old one from a year or two ago, simply overwrite it.

Thx Bubi.  Took a little bit of time because I didn't use the groundtype, waterc or waterd .bmps at all.  I hand "painted" every inch of shoreline & coral. :lol

I just flew this terrain- I don't generally do offline missions and such but it looked very nice from the screenshots.
I have to say-- if you want to see what the new terrain engine is capable of, you have to download this terrain. It looks magnificent.

Thank you for the screenies.

It was actually a two-fold project.  First I had to update this terrain to the new version for the missions already made for it.  Second, I needed a test subject to fiddle with the new terrain engine.

Crap.  I forgot to include the .awa file when I built it.  Looks like it will be clear & sunny skies.

Well done, flew all points of the compass, high & low, good terrain & color composition, attacked enemy shipping + airfields, was shot down ... very
realistic, btw landed on several isles & took off from same  now I can hardly wait for HTC to fix the Offline Missions Editor so we can play
USRanger's games.  TY for ur time & efforts.      :salute

isnt it always clear 'n' sunny on offline terrains?

Nope.  This is actually my first terrain without clouds, which shall be rectified shortly.  Changing the sky color to gray in your offline settings also adds much to the overcast look.

Ranger,

Would this be acceptable for a SEA terrain quality wise?

(Quality meaning how its setup, stability, special objects, correct amount of sides etc)

A CM would have to answer that I suppose.  I assume if it would be used that way, it would need to be a larger terrain (256x256 at least) and have HQs & strat added, plus more fields.  Terrain-wise, I don't think there would be any problems though IMO, it would just have to be bigger.

Well, if its something your interested in I want to setup a RedBull style terrain. Only I dont have the time or energy to start another full fledged terrain. The objects are done, I just need to set them up on a nice terrain. If its possible (Dux would know) we could combine the two. Giving your terrain some people to fly on it online and a new style of racing. Otherwise I am going to tack them on to Reno which is in indefinite holding waiting on a new OE. Thought it would be nice to turn some new stuff out for the SEA arenas, even if it is a group effort.

Just a thought....

The CM in charge of SASFRAS (RedBull Style Air Racing League) Notch is onboard and we are kicking around ideas. Skuzzy has tentatively approved the use of air racing skins with proper approval. I have a PM out to Dux about what sort of modifications this terrain would need.

Would it be possible to use your little airfield in various areas in lew of the 1 mile square runway groups?

I just did a flight of the map & it is awesome. I do see alot of potential for some great races. :aok

How about some flat lands in the corners with conventional terrain, large airfields, & courses on them.  I saw on another
terrain, an erased large airfield. Don't know if it was custom or what but that would be a great way to place the pylons.

In the HMS section of AHevents.com, I have outlined which buildings to blow up to simulate, with the fire pillers, the markers
for my course

I was telling Strip that it would be great to have famous landmarks in cities to race near. Something like the Eiffel Tower, or
Big Ben, or the Tahj Mahal, or some castles, maybe even the Kremlin in Moscow.

Just a thought here, but maybe you could create mini blocks of different countries or cities for a course.  Maybe 3x3 grid squares worth of European terrain ;)

Strip, if you want it, I'll send you the terrain files.  You can change whatever you want to meet your's & Notch's needs.  I don't mind at all.  It'd be kinda nice to see one of my terrains getting some good usage. :)  Let me know if you guys want it.  I do want to make an .awa (weather) file for it though.  I really want to make that volcano smoke. :D

Btw, I've already remodeled the port.

Last sir, You can create clouds to look like smoke. The clouds just move, sir.

Lol, SEA terrains are usually the CMs' territory.  Of course, I haven't seen any new terrains or anything updated since the new terrain engine came out.

Just teasing the CMs :neener: :D

...or am I? :noid

I kept thinking about that post.  I want to make it clear that it was totally a joke not to be taken seriously, especially toward Easy & midi, as I consider them terrain making buddies of mine.  I totally respect what the terrain CMs do.  Heck, I've applied twice to become one.  There are very few that understand the time, effort, energy, patience & passion that the terrain CMs put forward in their work more than I.  If any of you TCMs read that & took any offense to it, I apologize.  It really was meant as just a ribbing. :salute

Ranger,
That port looks sweet, would love to take a closer look at it and I appreciate you letting us possibly use your terrain. We were kicking around a completely scratch built terrain but this is still a viable option. I have already started Reno and starting a fresh one is going to be a big commitment. This after already spending a good 30-40 hours on the cones and trouble shooting my process. After New Years me and Notch will get together again and we will talk it over again.

I will PM my address shortly...thanks again.

np, CM's are required to have tough skins and flame proof suites anyway. As a btw, you'll be seeing a couple of new terrains and a couple of repairs very soon. Notice that I did not call those updates.

Everyone enjoy your holidays and stay safe.  :old:

Just downloaded this map map and in 1 word ... WOW !!!

Don't know if you have ever been to Belize and flew over the Cayes there, but for me, it brought back that memory for me ... all your missing is the "Blue Hole".

Is what you've done here acceptable for an MA terrain ?

The textures used-yes.
The custom port & ships-no.

I'm working on a desert-ish MA terrain now.  When that is finished, I'd like to do another, using these textures, to create a true Pacific feel.  This one was a two part project.  This was an older terrain that needed updated for offline missions, and I wanted to experiment with the textures & such.  Maybe the AvA folks would like a new terrain to draw in some folks.  We'll see.  Gotta get that desert one finished first.  Thanks for checking it out. :salute

I hear ya ... no rush ... looking forward to your desert map.

The OZKansas map (still the best map ever produced IMHO) could use a re-do with these "Pacific" tiles ... that would be awesome.
