Title: Edit an existing map or terrain

Before I waste my time is it possible to edit an existing map or terrain using terrain editor?  Exisiting as in one somebody else created?

No.

You would need the source files, and those are not usually shared.

Same reason skin bitmaps and .psd/.xcfs are not generally shared I would assume, so people don't take large chunks of your work to claim as their own.
