This was the first time I got to try for the Rook Central strat target tonight.
-Mission was posted for Bishland to join.
-Mission target alt was 30K.
-Mission aircraft were B17's.
-Escorts were on completely volunteer basis.
-Shortly after rolling it became apparent Rook career map watchers were watching the darbar "billboard".
-We (escorts included) fought off and killed several fighters coming in from various alts- low, co-alt, and 35K+, on the way to Rookland factory target.
-Overall, we were able to indiscriminantly bomb Rookland factory target. It was enough for us to know we actually made it, and bombed it.
-Several flights shot down in the interim, mine included. None eventually made it out of Rookland central.
Hitech, I think this is testament enough as to how the strat battle is playing out thus far. 30K, we got there and bombed it, but NONE of the offensive made it home. Anything lower would have been an easy slaughter against the offensive force. It was a lot of fun, nonetheless.
I hope you continue toward some refinements that satisfy all sides. Good start so far. :)

It was the best mission I have seen country versus country ad hoc and ad-lib as it was. I want to try it more often Thndr. :aok

You'll get more opportunities.

way back in aw, i had done some bombing. one or two times, i wanted as many bombers as i could get.
what we did though, was up from different bases. don't have all your mission buffs leave from the same base creating a big bardar. spread em out, so there's several little bardars.....won't arouse too much suspicion that way. keep all in seperate sectors, with the "rally" or "meeting" point at your desired altitude, and very close to either the front, or the target.
make em work harder for your kills. :devil :aok
btw.....sounds like it was a blast.
-
you will need more escorts. I took off while you were 2 sectors out and made 30k as you were over target. The 109k is one of the few machines for this task.
-
i'm curious.
were most of the interceptors me262's? i only ask because of the screenshot.
-
Intercepting aircraft varied from 262's, to Jugs, to Ta152's, F4U's, 109's etc... Altitude of the more patient interceptors looked to be 35 to 40,000ft.

those patient ones were probably the ones that got most of yas too then.........
i was curious, as i was under the impression that bombers gor swarmed by 262's in the lw arenas........

i flew a little last night....only buffs though. was tired..........got a kill too.......second run, was flyin ju88's and not paying attention to fuel. was cutting rpm and manifold pressure way back to stretch the last few drops. this let a zeek catch up to me. impatient bastage. he planted hisself right on my 6 low. he died. :devil

Exaggerating as always... ;)
Most players still play the usual stuff. Only a fraction is doing these high-alt raids. But I'm having the most fun since a very long time in AH doing all that "boring stuff" :P

one thing i DO have to say.......the new scenery is spectacular.

Not last night in LW.
MW still had some low fights.
-
Bomber survivability solely depends on the bombers tactical flying as well as the experience, skill & communication between the bombers & escort squadron. A good unit experienced in escorting will get the bombers out of the target zone unless it's a complete mess up front but looked like a hell of a time Egg.
My boys will see the 91st tonight. Unfortunately I'll be at work when you guys depart.
:aok
-
I Wish i had saved that film!
That was the best misson I have ever been on, watching 152 and 262's go into out group and get shredded by 100+ .50s
-
"Bomber survivability solely depends on ...."
...having a dedicated escort. No decent escort? No survival. Just like in real life!
But because this is a game, where pile-its don't place the same value on their "life,"
your chances of surviving are next to nil unless you have an equal amount of escorts
- and escorts that know what to do and how to "fly" at 20k plus.

If you are still finding the fights you want, why do you feel the need to piss in someone else's punchbowl? Is the thought that someone may have a different idea of "fun" that troubling to you?

Hmmm. I logged on for the first time in weeks last night and had no problem finding a low furball in LW Orange. I don't think I ever flew over 3K alt.
-
Tried it, wasted an hour+ climbing and driving to the new city. Bombed only to find afterwards the suburbs were non destructible. Shot down 2 fighters, eventually lost all 3 lancs.
I can say that I could have had way better ways to spend that hour+ time by furballing. Last sortie I'll make.
-
AH well on it's way to boredom. All that time wasted climbing, lol
No way Shuff, can't agree there! This is as real as it gets outside of FSO and scenarios. There is place called the DA for 1 on 1 fights and furballs 24/7, you should get in there more often.
Great fun.

Cap thats the way it usualy is, you wont see that many prop driven planes up high, mostly 262's , personally theres to many 262's in this game,(wouldnt hurt my feeling to remove them) And i know they werent that plentiful IRL.

actually, it says in the update info page that the suburbs aren't bombable.
-
I went to 16k with my friend and found out that there arent individual objects but city blocks that are bombable.

that also is part of why i asked my original question.
knowing they weren't very common in real life, and so many in here want realism, i was wondering if there should be some way to limit them.
gonna duck now...... :noid
-
If they (262s) keep coming to 30k they will limit themselves. 262s suck at that altitude and their only real option against level bombers at that altitude is the HO pass which usually leave them damaged with one kill or dead with none. As for the rest of the planes they eventually end up to the rear of the bombers and try to climb into the six position.
I dont think grouping up from different sectors at a rendezvous point is going to make much difference. Most of the cons we encountered launched after a rendezvous would have been made anyway. The problem planes were the 152s and P-47Ms over the target. I think what needs to happen is fuel porking and radar porking before the mission even launches but its a logistics nightmare to try and coordinate that.

aahh.....understood.
amazingly, it's starting to sound like these missions need to be planned, much the same as they did in rl.
this is starting to sound more and more fun. :aok

On the 262 issue, the 262s cost perks and B-17s do not. As long as the "average" 262 cannot earn enough perks to replace its self in B-17 kills, then the number of 262 flying against B-17s should go down once the perks run out. So what you have here is a war of attrition. On one side you have a big pile of fighter perks that have accumulated over the years, and on the other side you have the patience of the bomber guys to fly for hours with little chance of surviving.
I would think that if someone (Lushe?) where really interested and had the time, they could check to see how many B-17s where killed by 262s and the number of 262s killed by B-17s; then, based on average perk costs, determine if the 262s killed enough B-17s to cover their losses. If the 262s are covering their losses, then the number of 262s the B-17s are seeing today will either stay the same or go up. If the 262s are not covering their losses then the number should go down once the perks run out.
If it weren't for the cartoon airplanes it would almost be real.

Almost no one in game is able to fly the 262 in a way that the perks gained by kills are covering the perks lost by the inevitable loss of a 262. At average multiplier, you need to kill 800 B-17's to make up for the loss of a single 262.
However, there are other, much better ways to get perks for the 262 (furballing in high eny planes like 109's)., my own gross fighter perk gain is ~1000 per month.
All in all, there is not really a war of attrition, as that would imply a large group of players implementing a long-term strategy on a large scale in the MA, no matter how little "fun" it may seme to be for a few months.
Getting the "other side" simply running out of perks for 262's and 163's simply won't happen.
-
That looked fun. Trying to get my squad to do one!
-
Ah, if I was on I would have definitely participated in this. Looks like fun.
-
you don't have to worry about me way up there. :neener:
Thats because your B38 will fall apart before it even gets to that alt... :noid :bolt:
-
I spent the entire time the raid was feet dry until it hit the target climbing 5,000 yards to their 3oc in my 190A8. Two 262s hit the formation. One buzzed through and set one on fire, then aborted. Another punched straight through the center head on, lighting two and outright destroying one.
-

Great fun.
Realism in the MAs will kill AH. Reality was hours upon hours of pure unabated boredom followed by shear excitement for short periods. That is not what most people look for in a flight combat game.

Realism in the MAs will kill AH.
This "realism" is not enforced on anyone. And I'm having played many hours since the change, and most of the time less than 5% (if even that many) are playing the new "high alt strat game". Right now I'm online for about 2 hours in LWO, and no raid on the rook strats has happened at all during the whole time.
AH still gives you the same choices you always had regarding playing style. Heck, you even get less points for bombing a strat city than bombing any undefended airbase town...

It may eventually. Once folks get their fill of boredom. Which from the posts I am seeing should be soon.

There is no such thing as boredom when you have such an amazing group of friends as my squad. We did a 2 hour mission to bomb a city tonight and we were wetting outselves laughing and bantering the whole way there and back. The 25 minutes of abject terror in combat was also fantastic.
It's not about what you do, it's who you do it with.

Confusing man. The game is why we are all friends here and we enjoy all the facets of the game while having a bloody good laugh with each other. I don't see why you got such a large bee up your butt about it to be honest. You doubt that just because I enjoy a long range mission once in a while that I don't know the value of a good 1 on 1 or furball? Why don't you come along on our next squad mission, you're always welcome if you have no one to enjoy the game with at any time. Sure you could try your hardest to make it boring but I doubt you could last 10 minutes before you starting having fun again.
S!

that was pretty sweet, takin off from a base business as usual an to look up an see like 18 enemy formations. it was alot of fun to intecept gettin to get some bomber action. an if u were wonderin where u escorts went. i ate them wit my 20mm's :rock
-
I haven't been on in a long time. I was thinking of trying to do a Ki-67 mission, escorted by Ki-84s, at about 20,000-22,000ft to the city.
-
Our squad was having a little fun mixing it up down low with some smack-talkers when word came in that finally the knights were attacking our HQ and strats. It turned out to be seventeen bomber formations followed up with a dozen or so more and at least twenty-five escorts (including a P-40 believe it or not). The most often heard comment on the radio was: WOW! Followed closely by: this is awesome man!

On large maps you will get slaughtered, unless you catch the opposition at an unaware moment. During last days, the usual altitude has been around 30k, with B17s up to 33 and escorts/interceptors up to The only successful bigger raid that I have seen below that altitudes was a 20-23k Arado 234 mission.

Look its buck rogers in his lil orange plane lol

Hey Zoom did any of you make it home? It was a small turn out on our side. :D

when tonight or the FSO?? FSO all our bombers made it home, i wasnt on tonight been watching Football

Here's a few pictures of that 234 mission, bottom of the page. I believe you're in one of those pictures Lusche. :salute Nice flying sir. Lucky for us the plane formation you tried a couple times had already accidentally dropped his bomb load. :rofl

You guys did a good job in ruining my 262 run. I already saw myself landing with a dozen kills when I found your raid... I ended up with 2 kills and a shot-up engine :uhoh

Slaughtered is an acceptable result, as long as there was a fight and people had fun. Also, Ki-67 are faster than B-17s, though definitely slower than Ar234s.
-
actually, it says in the update info page that the suburbs aren't bombable.
Actually I never read the damn thing so I found out afterwards when I was surprised with no 'building destroyed' messages after dumping 3x14x1000lbs on it.
I mean if the burbs arent destructible what purpose do they serve there in the first place?

to make it look like a realistic city.

The big thing is you are going to need raids like this to be effective against the new start a single bomber or 2 guys is nto going to really do that much damage.

I belive thats the point. I helps promote fights, which it certainly seems to have succeeded in already! Unfortunatly im out of the game atm due to serious Financial issues, but I hope to be back soon, and I can't wait to go on an escort or even on a big buff run! I currently spend most of my time doing just that offline! :cry
-
All I know is, quite often I get asked to put up a high alt mission like these anymore. It used to not be so. It used to be that 15K to 20K was the routine fighting platform. It's now come up. More escort squads/groups/individuals have outright asked me to put something up for them to cover, because us heavies are the catalyst for the fights and fun to happen. The action is not instant, but it proves out to be pretty intense in the end. By now, even you "bad guys" have figured it out, because PM's have shown up in the text buffer asking if this is my doing. :D
There is a tangible yearning for realism & immersion.

Some go to something else as furballing they just die alot.
Silat and myself went up in 262s to intercept that bunch last night. It is realistic..... long boredom climbing then a short bit of fun.

Thank you for starting to restrict your use of blanket statements.
I have no doubt that the high-heavy-and-escort mission will stay rather popular, but I do think that right now they're so abundant because the city is still new. After the novelty wears off they'll drop off a bit, but they surely won't be gone.

I have not been paying attention to the costs of perk birds so I’m guessing you could only afford to lose 5 or 6 262s per month to use up your gross 1000 fighter perk gain for the month. (Edit: Don't know how many 262s you are already losing each month so I should say you can only afford to lose another 5 or 6 262s each month.) And yes, there are better ways of earning perks but it means flying something other than a perk bird at Egg’s B-17s. So if we could get Egg to put up missions 24/7 for the month…
Anyway, thanks for looking.

B-17s flying at 33K in this game is simply laughing in the face of history.
Aside from that, 71 Squadron ran a bomber mission (we're knit) against the strats in LWO, before they retreated to HQ and stayed there. We were in the 25k range this time. The majority of our bombers made it in and out and off the enemy continent. Most of our bomber losses were folks probably intent on following us all the way back to land. I believe Wrongway smoked 3 Me262s in a row! (Give that man a cigar!)
It's very possible to do lower raids, and once players realize this it'll be "more fun" for all involved.
My issue is currently it's a 2-hour mission to hit the "CLOSE" strats, and when they jump back to HQ area it's at least a 6 hour effort... It's ludicrously out of reach.

We did a follow-up spit sweep later (with less opposition), to give you an idea of who as in the bomber mission, here is a "roster screenshot" -- most of these guys were present during the previous run:

I avoid large groups of laggy bombers like the plague in a 262. About once a year I forget and do it again only to remind myself not to. Most of the time I don't even see the tracers of the bomber that hits me. Once I made a successful pass on a set, got well clear and started to reset my attack then I heard bullets hitting me and my engine was smoked. I thought maybe an escort got me but nobody was close and the film confirmed it. It was just the bomber's crappy connection. Of course he deserved the hit that he got but it is still lame. I won't take a jet up there and have it mistreated like that. :D

It's the forum equivalent of 'its a free country I can whine if I want'

I have great times in game when I can find someone to fight.
Fun last night too when general rox was blowing a fuse while losing bases. He said I was useless. Maybe because with all his ranting on knight channel I asked him why he had not sent anyone up to protect strats. He logged not long after. I can only figure he goes to work to relax after a long hard night of fighting in AH.

Let me ask you though, how can an hour long bomber/escort mission be less boring than spending so long reading the crap we type on these forums?
