Title: Flap usage when manuevering
Post by: ares473 on December 08, 2009, 11:21:57 AM
I have been doing some online practice with using flaps during maneuvering. Only once did I succeed in causing an overshoot but that was not my intent. The question I have for the seasoned pilots out there is how do you use your flaps effectively? The game doesn't let you drop flaps until your speed is down usualy below 150mph and then there seems to be serious buffeting. Any tips?

In my opinion, I don't think you should try to use ur flaps to cause an overshoot if you are going faster than what ur flaps could deploy. Some planes like F4u's can deploy flaps and landing gear at higher speed but they are the exception and not the norm. I use flaps regularly when on top of loops to "swing" my nose faster towards the ground so i can have a shot faster than the guy trying to come up to me. Like when you are trying to rope somebody. Also when the fight came down to low and slow, then using flaps to turn tighter than ur opponent to get gun solutions could be a good choice but keeping in mind that you are scrubing E when doing so. When your opponent has and can keep more Energy than you he can dictate the fight, get higher position and take you out. So basically, using flaps with the plane you fly the most will be of trial (surviving) and errors (dying), until you figure out when and when not using them to ur advantage. Hope it helps you a bit....   :aok

There are quite a few planes that can drop flaps at 250 mph and below.

some aircraft don;t need flaps to turn well. some do.

i flew spits, hurris, and zeeks. in the spits and hurris, i rarely needed flaps, until the speed was very low. in zeeks, i used them a little more, but not often.

when i started flying the hellcat, i found i needed to use flaps more. they kind of seemed to help me around in a turn.
i fly the lightning almost exclusively now. i use flaps in that to help me over the top of loops, when i'm turning to engage, and during initial turns in a turn fight. i don't ever leave them out. i'm almost constantly working my flaps, along with my throttle. i go by feel more than anything.

you mentioned feeling a buffet. this is the onset of a stall.

what you have to remember though, is that an aircraft can stall at any speed. when a wing stalls, it is a function of the angle of attack to the oncoming wind, regardless of your speed.

hope this helps a little.
