Not interested in playing online, just maybe FPSers and sports games like basketball or hockey. We already have a Wii which is fun but not good for those.
One can also do the netflix thing with an xbox but I'm not sure if that is needed so maybe no benefit there. Not really a deciding factor.
Have an HDMI hook up along with nice TV with great sound.
Already have a Blue-Ray disc player.
Thanks for any feedback.

Since you're not going to be using it for online gaming, then it really just boils down to personal preference. If you're going to be playing multiplayer games, I would then suggest Xbox 360. It's got a far larger online community and XBLA is actually a pretty good, leaps ahead of what Sony offers with PSN (PlayStation Network).
Both consoles have ability to stream Netflix movies, though I would think that Sony would have a larger library available for streaming than what would be available streaming Netflix through Xbox. Currently, any Sony related movie title isn't available to those streaming Netflix through the Xbox 360.
You already have a Blue-Ray player so there is no need to get a PS3 for that particular reason. Look at what titles are available for each console and decide which one appeals to you the most.
ack-ack

I have both, and like the XBox 360 for gaming.

I have both also and i use the 360 far more than the PS3. The only thing i use the Ps3 for anymore is Metal Gear Solid 4 :x

Not Battlefield 1943 with the glorified Infantry(Engineer in disguise)?
It doesn't really matter which you choose, as they both have Megaman 9 available. I would suggest Xbox 360, because of backwards compatibility which gives you the ability to play Jet Set Radio Future, or, from what I can tell anyway. Even so, the PS3 gives you access to Megaman Legends and Megaman Legends 2 thanks to the PSN... so, yes, personal preference.

I have a PS3 and 360 and prefer the PS3 a lot more.
The PS3 has god of war 3 which is a huge PS series.
The good thing about the PS is that online play is free so even if you feel like just that 1 time to play a sports game online you can without paying anything unlike 360.
PS has a lot more games coming out next year which will actually take advantage of the hardware capabilities which I myself am looking forward to.

What type of hardware capabilities?
-
I have the 60GB version which was the first generation to come out so it also has PS2 capability.
The nice thing about PS3 is that it also has wireless and blu ray capabilities unlike the 360. More USB ports and in my opinion a lot more features and capabilities.
I made a mistake in my earlier post that god of war 3 comes out in march which is high anticipated by PS owners. They have the first 2 god of wars together for a discounted price and those 2 games alone will have you playing for a couple months.

Hardware wise, the PS3 is far superior. They even sell PS3s "tied together" in bundles of six or ten to use as supercomputers. It also has much higher reliability; the xBox 360 uses an eco-friendly lead-free solder which degrades over time until components lose their interface with the motherboard and the system has to be returned. (Google "Red Ring of Death")
You can also put any laptop hard drive in a PS3 (and keep your warranty intact; involves popping off a piece of plastic, undoing a screw, pulling a drawer out, swapping the drive, and doing the first steps backwards) whereas the xBox uses expensive proprietary drives. I currently have a 360GB PS3. :lol You can literally use the PS3 as a media center that plays video, audio, CDs, DVDs, and BluRay.
Read the Wikipedia articles on each. They do have a rather NPOV on both and list each console's hardware components.

also there arent many games that strech the limits of the graphics capabilities.
but, my personal favorate is this thing called sixaxis whae you twist the whole controller like on the wii to control...somthing

I chose a PS3 as one of the most reasonable BluRay players with a leading edge game bonus.
I confess many of the games I enjoy mostly as graphics novelties and don't play them often. I'm particularly disappointed with the bat ray type controller as a flight sim controller (a bit too free wheeling; still prefer a joystick, which is not available with PS3).
Some of the Cabelas hunting games are interesting, but I'm still waiting for a decent clay shooting simulator.
My favorites are Call of Duty 4 and Warhawks for both on-line and off-line. On-line is free, and you can get into some fun competition there.
Some of the graphics really are gorgeous, far beyond that available in competitors.

There is an arcade-style joystick controller available, but it's obviously not what we're used to. I'd ask some of the joystick modders we have in HW&SW; they could probably re-circuit a standard joystick to act as a PS3 controller. I think this wireless Cyborg I have would be promising.

I know there are a lot of USB peripherals that arent exactly labeled PS3 but there are a lot of them that do say compatible with playstation.
There are several logitech mouses that you can use that are compatible with playstation, the same with keyboards etc. Im sure you could google a list of peripherals, hell might get lucky and have a stick that may work i.e. logitech again.
The graphics are getting more impressive though. Assassins creed 2 is impressive, god of war 3 looks like nothing else well at least the trailers do, and the sports games are a novelty item graphics wise.

Xbox 360 hands down. Playing stand alone is like playing a stand alone air combat game. Programmers cheat to win in the higher difficulty settings. PvP puts you up against human opponents.
Plus there is a lot of new stuff out and Natal coming out next year. Very cool!

I have both and i like the ps3 better..... with one exception the size of the controller.
You are not going to be using the ps3 for any of the things that i like about it, so for you just go with the xbox....

360 controller beats the crap out of the PS3 controller ;)

I would disagree, but I've been using a Playstation controller since I was 7.

This is nonsense, I don't have either but have played both, and the classic, superb controller of the PS3 is the only thing I like about the system to be honest.

Your avatar is nonsense! :P
I prefer the 360 controller. Every time I get my hands on a PS2 or PS3 controller, it just feels... Awkward.
To the original poster, I'd say go what your used to.

Traded in my 360 with a lot of games and stuff for a PS3 about 1.5 years ago just for MGS4. Never regreted it. It's true that M$ has the better multiplayer and community support but unless you have a ton of friends to play with I always found the console online experience far inferior than what you can get on the PC. It's also true that the PS3 had a weak exclusive title line up for starters and only a few system sellers but that changed. Nice Top 10 PS3 exclusives at gametrailers: http://www.gametrailers.com/video/top-10-screwattack/59488 (http://www.gametrailers.com/video/top-10-screwattack/59488)
So why go PS3?
- Hardware: blueray player, harddisk easily upgradeable (put in a 250GB drive a month ago), great accessory compatibility, wireless built in, TOS link
- Games: God of War Trilogy, Metal Gear Solid Series, Killzone2, Little Big Planet, Uncharted2 and more to come
The PS3 perfectly fits my quick gaming fix along with slick design and great multimedia support (the media center actually works better than the M$ one).

I have 360 and only thing I hate in it is noise. I dont know about ps3...
-
The PS3 is extremely quiet unless under equally extreme duress. If you can hear your PS3, it needs more ventilation.

Netflix is coming to Wii in the new year.

Niether...prefer pc's hands down...but I do have a wwwwwwiiiiiiiiiiii for winter golf outings a la Tiger Woods... :D
