Title: PC Power & Cooling PSU's
Post by: TilDeath on December 09, 2009, 02:16:29 PM
IF your in the market for a PSU and looking at PC Power & Cooling get them while they are still around at suppliers.  The "old/current" PSU's from PC P&C are EOL (end of life) and OCZ who own PC Power & Cooling is closing the manufacturing facility for the items.  The PC Power & Cooling PSU's will now be made along side and be identical to the OCZ PSU's jsut different lableing and maybe colors.  Whats left at the ware houses and distributors is what is left.  The new generation of PC Power & Cooling PSU's will be released sometime in Jan 2010.  MY OCZ rep is trying to steer me to the new "Z" line from OCZ.  I will evaluate the products and report my findings in the future.

EMAIL QUOTE from my rep.

Yes, I have read about the closing the PC Power & Cooling plant.  Shame really.  The OCZ line has not been as good as the original PCP&C line.

Awww poopsticks!!! OCZ has been like Microsoft's operating systems every other model sucks rocks. At least the standards at PCP&C were good across the board over the past few years...great products. With OCZ it's been hit and miss.

They just mixed names around gyrene.  Some of the OCZ labeled line was made by PCP&C, while some of the PCP&C line was made by OCZ.  You could tell by the shipping weight. :)

PCP&C power supplies were always heavier and slightly larger than the OCZ designed counterparts.

Slowly, but surely, we are getting down to one power supply manufacturer who makes the supplies for everyone.

Dollars to donuts there is a bean counter involved in this decision.

there's always a bean counter in everything.  money is gotta come out of somewhere to pay for the ex-wife and new girlfriend  :devil.  btw lots of companies buy out the competion to close them out.

OCZ has owned PC Power & Cooling for some time now.  They seem to be putting all their eggs in the SSD drives and letting the good stuff (PC Power) go to the wayside. Go figure.

Hey hey hey, We're not all bad.

However, I have feared this since OCZ took over. Probably off shore now.

They probably had the original idea to be able to manufacture power supplies for other companies, but no one would buy from them as everyone who sells power supplies is some type of competitor as well.

PC Power & Cooling supplies were also not viable for OEM's, making them a high end select shop, which kept their prices high.  They never could compete with the high volume, low quality companies.

Everyone is so quick to kill off these companies that make quality product without regard to price.  I am glad I latched onto a couple of the supplies before they got shut down.

I think that leaves just two power supply manufacturers, for computer supplies.  Both in China.

does anyone know if OCZ will uphold the PC Power & Cooling Warranties ?  I still have nearly 4 years of warranty left on my 750 watt PC Power & Cooling PSU........

I can only tell you that a solid Power Suppy like PC Power & Cooling's is a godsend to gamers and those that demand the most out of their computers. When I replaced my modular PSU with a 750 quad I noticed the improvement immediately. I no longer had to recalibrate my stick after a couple hours of use. The comp just seemed to snap to attention faster.

Yes TC, I have been told they will warranty the units, but if the unit has to be replaced, it will come back as an OCZ unit of like power rating.

It seems OCZ joined the ranks of countless companies that feel quantity is better than quality.

It's all about stock returns. Quality can and will be sacrificed if it's justifiable through profit.

I'm quite aware of that, just decided not to mention anything about it since I would have probably had my remarks edited by Mr. Skuzzy. :)

It is not just the return on investment either.  Most companies today are convinced if you put enough bling-bling on something the people will hail it as the bestest stuff evar!

People will buy crap.  They prove it everyday.

Bean counters are great. If their only responsibility and power is in counting beans. Just gotta not allow them any power into making decisions on the manufacturing or sales end.
Soon as you do. Quality usually gets exchanged for cheap. and "good stuff aint cheap, cheap stuff usually isnt that good."
You have an initial surge in short term profit followed by long term losses or a sharp down in profits long term as people realize they are buying crap and start to look elsewhere. The stockholders start to leave soon thereafter.

It's a sad day, really.

If you check out this link (http://www.ocztechnology.com/images/awards/Z650_chart.jpg), you'll see that the 650W OCZ replacement model splits its +12V power across four rails, compared to a single 49A +12V rail on the PCPC Silencer 610.  That's certainly not an upgrade by any measure.

Been using PCPC PSUs in personal and client builds forever it seems; guess I'll be moving on to Seasonic.  Their new X-Series DC-to-DC supplies  (http://www.seasonicusa.com/X.htm) look excellent.

Ok so the next big question is.
Whats the next best choice for power supplies?

That's bugging me quite a bit. First thought is OCZ, yet I have no clue.

Having a fairly new build myself. Hopefully It will be several years before I need another one LOL

But occasionally I have friends that ask me to slap together a halfway decent system. And I may decide to build one for my daughter. the one she's using now already having gotten a bit long in the tooth.

She wants a laptop. but she aint getting one till college. which isnt for another 4 1/2 years.
Provided I dont kill her first. LOL
