Legs is doing well. she is getting HUGE. Her mantle, is over 5" and her spread from tip to tip is close to 3' about 34". She started showing some aggression towards the other fish in the tank so I moved them all and she now has all 125 gallons to herself.

Some morning you're gonna be found laying flat on your bed with her wrapped
around your face an it's proboscis al the way down your esophagus. About two
days later the embryo will hatch .. out and thru your stomach wall!
(cool topic. been enjoying your posts. seems like 125gal sure aint enough anymore.
too late to let her go or do you have a bigger tank planned?
-
:rofl ........ :noid
Actually 125 is still plenty big for her. According to the experts that tank in perfect for her. and usually a 75 gallon is what is recommended for O.Briareus she also at the age now where her growth has slowed down to the point where she wont get much bigger. Toward the endof there life they actually start to shrink, mailnly because they stop eating, and lay eggs.

Don't tell any Chinese that you own a nice-sized Octopus. You might find her at the local buffet.

Same goes for dogs and cats.... :lol

Great job. Absolutely intrigueing.
-
Fantastic....this has drawn my interest since your first post.
Keep us posted.
-
Wow she has gotten huge! Looks like she has done a 180 in personality though. Real skittish compared to the other videos you have or did she just wake up on the wrong side of the tank?
-
No she was just moody that day I think. she will go a few days of being playful and social then she will be grumpy for a few days and so on. I was cleaning the tank the other day which I guess she didn't want, she came shooting out from the rocks swinging her arms and squirting water and attacked my brush then me, I got soaked! :noid
-
Capt,
Nice to see Leggs is still kicking around!!
She has to be one of the most unusual pets there is!
Keep the vids coming.
:salute

WTG Cpt.
I wonder if the Octupus knows what a celebrity he's become. I'd love to have a salt tank one day. Thats a fascinating hobby. :salute
-
Very impressive Cpt. :aok
I'm curious, how much does her coloration change, and how much is it affected by mood?
Kinda makes me wish my 100 gal tank was salt water, just so I could keep a beast like that. I bet my wife's cats would stop jacking with my fish damn quick once they encountered something that was a Hell of a lot bigger and smarter than they are. :D
-
I have to say it's cool as hell, and I've been a fan since you first got her.
I'm glad she's still doing alright, hearing the stories of them escaping I worry about her lol.
<S> keep up the good work.

Thanks!
Her colors are constantly changing it's amazing. When she hunts she will blend in with her surroundings almost perfectly, changing as she moves around. But sometimes she will sit there are just flash all different colors and patterns. It is def related to her mood. she will also change textures from smooth to bumpy and rough. Even though i have had as long as I have I am still mesmerized by her.
-
You should remind everyone here that almost all cephs are colorblind. :headscratch:
:D
-
It's true they are, pretty amazing especially when she mimics the colors of her surrounds perfectly.

actually is is not octopi, octopuses is the correct spelling Octopus is a Greek word, adding the 'i' is a Latin thing. I used to think the same thing but a professor corrected me.
octopodes is also correct.

Yup, 'octopuses' is the correct plural. 'Octopodes' is pedantic.
-
Wrong, yet again, Skyrock. :aok :lol
In any case it's good to see Legs doing well. She'll be just fine in a 125, you got good advice. As long as you deal quickly with the water quality swings she causes after feedings, she'll live out her life happy.
She's over two years old already right? Well into middle age already!
-
It may seem like I have had her that Long but I actually caught her on April,2009. Unfortunately octopuses only live on average for a year. Females will lay eggs care for them and then die shortly after they hatch. and most males will rarely live longer than 18 months. The Giant Pacific Octos will live up to five years but that is the only acception. Legs will likely lay eggs in Feb or March and die soon after. That is the one downside to these exceptional creatures. :frown:

I read this article and found it very interesting. Maybe get Legs some coconut shells to play with.

Hey CptFish- I would really like to see some more videos of Legs in action. You think you can get someone to film a tank cleaning session so us AH'rs can see?

Octopus
Collecting, then using both halves of discarded coconuts as shelter. (It's carrying both halves under it, during locomotion.) If they didn't have such short lives, they could take over the world someday.
