Title: Frankfurt AAR (with pics)
Post by: StokesAk on December 10, 2009, 02:35:36 PM
A few minutes before launch I grabbed my 17 and loaded her up with come bombs, I hopped on command vox and to my suprise was tasked with leading the rest of the B17's to out target in 12,12.

We started at an airstart of 20k, as i heard screams of pilots ripping their wings off I tried to get my bomber in the air and get some kind of formation going.

After a few minutes 1/2 of the B17's and other fighters were no where to be found, Lilsquid (CO) ordered us to fly straight in to the target, so me and a band of about went straight on course.

I took a while to get formed up, luckily some of the 91st were with us and we were able to get into somewhat of a tight formation.

Were cruising along when out of nowhere a Fw 190A8 splashes through our group, luckily no one is hurt and a few of out escorts jump him.

Now the alarm has been sounded! Withing minutes all hell breaks loose, 109's and 51's dodging in and out of our bomber group trying to kill each other, 190's blasting away at out bombers  but we are putting up a good defence.

We manage to get through another wave of fighters, but another will be coming any minutes! We quickly regroup and get ready for another attack.

Her it comes the first one in is a Fw 190A8 gun blazing from both aircraft tout B17's and his 190 have a head to head joust. The 190 makes it through and splashes on of my drones, one of our P51 escorts take him out a few seconds later.

Soon more fighters show up from out high 12 o`clock! 109's, the come down on us like steel rain ripping the tails off some of our B17's, but its not over yet! Frantically we all jump in out tail and ball guns blazing!

Down to one drone i try to form up with the rest of my group by having only 3 engines makes it hard. Soon we are over our target, the city of Frankfurt, most of out bombers make it there in one piece and are ahead of me, the drop their bombs on the city and hi tail it out of there!

Sadly, a Messerschmidt sneaks up one and and slaughters my last remaining B17 and the frame is over for me.

I thought I heard the Swastikas were band from plane skins or other markings in the game. Was I misinformed, because that sure looks like a swastika in the wing of that 109. How'd that happen?

I didn't realize there was a difference. I did wonder why it was blue.  If I may ask, why is only the german one band? I've wondered why they were band, but didn't overthink it because I figured it had something to do with not wanting to promote the symbol, but then why leave this one in? seems like a small technical difference.

The Swastika was nothing before the Nazis used it, it is a good luck symbol to a tribe of American Indians (i forget which)

isn't it that it is banned by law in germany, and if it appeared on the planes in AH, AH would be banned in germany?

(complete speculation)

I would have to do some reading, but Hitler's swastika would be banned, not the Finnish. I'm specuating as well. Not real up on other country's laws.

The Finnish Air Force was established in 1918 and it adopted the blue swastika as the national marking. A certain austrian corporal and his ideology emerged almost 20 years later. The finnish swastika has nothing to do with Germany and even less with the national socialists.  The swastika is still on numerous flags and medals in Finland, such as the presidential flag.

Interesting.... I've never read anything about the Fin's emblems before. Thanks for the post.

The symbol is banned in Germany yes but not apparently in the case of education and art I'm doubtful that AH would be banned in Germany if its planes displayed a swastika. I've seen pictures from the Luftwaffe museum in Germany the planes still have the swastika on the tail. There was a recent attempt to get it banned across Europe because somehow they believe a stupid looking cross has the power to build a surge of far right support in Europe and that the problem has nothing to do with immigration policys.

Look at it like the Confederate flag here in the U.S. As it stands now, I see that as part of our history- a learning tool about our past.

Aces High is entertainment, not education and the Nazi swastika would get the game banned.  The Finnish Von Rossen cross, on the other hand, is fine as it has nothing to do with the Nazi's, other than a possible link at the origin point.

The Finnish Air Force adopted the Von Rossen cross as its symbol after a Swedish nobleman, Duke Von Rossen if I recall correctly, donated the first aircraft to Finland to form their air force.  A certain German ace, who was employed as a commercial pilot, apparently paid frequent visits to the Von Rossen residence when he stopped in Sweden, being apparently interested a young lady.  That German ace was Hermann Goering and he may have remembered the Von Rossen cross and modified it a bit by canting it on its corner and changing colors for the Nazi party.

The basic swastika form is quite common, particularly in India where it is a symbol of good fortune.
