Title: now tell me THIS aint bogus
Post by: aircat on October 17, 1999, 05:43:00 PM
me and POOKSTER are flying high field cap waiting for a c47 both of us in 51s... we get a destress call from 214cavej and we head to him we get alt reading and start to climb to intercept he kills cave just before vis. we are about equal alt and he just finished a climb... he is heading at us at first then he turns tail and makes a break for f23 I start a shallo dive to make closure faster. even after bleeding E on a break turn he starts to pull away in a 109.. at about .1 per 7 seconds with a slight climb and I stayed level for closure speed. ok so they are faster from 15 to 20k WE WAS AT 26.5K!!! we had speed he makes turn and still gets away?!?!

just before that I had made a high speed dive at a 109. he was in a climb to kill cave and I was late again but I had him in my sights... he rolls and split s I had a good tail so I followed him got closed into 170 with slow gain but no good gun angle. he semi levels and then started to leave me like I didnt have my engine even on! both counts I had WEP running and the speed advantage... for the "Fastest" prop plane in WWII the pony plain bites. you cant run from an enemy or catch them even if your supposed to be in your "Sweet alt zone".

"for the "Fastest" prop plane in WWII the pony plain bites"

It wasn't the fastest prop plane in WW2.  It may not be perfect yet in Aces High, but there were several other planes that were as fast or faster at various altitudes.

Perhaps it's a dumb question, but here I go: Had you external tanks? It happens to me all the time...  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

no I had no external tanks as it was a short run I had to go on and the ponies have plenty of fuel with out ext. and before someone asks I had gear and flaps up (in).

yes at various alts but this was where I was TOLD buy many of "experts" that the pony should walk from 109s. the 109 was only faster from 15 - 20k we was at 26.5k to start and he started a climb I was level his climb wasnt steep enough to gain that kind of vertical seperation. he was slower to start with. its plain bull. the only plane a pnoy seems to be able to catch or run from so far is a buff! not enough time against La5s to test them yet.

Im beginning to wonder if the computer its being used on is having effect on performance. my frame rates are fine. but EVERYthing is catching/leaving me no matter what I fly. but the pony seems worse of them all!

As funk pointed out in the other thread the problem here isn't the P51, it's actually performing reasonably close to spec. The problem is that it's being put up against the 109 G-10. that's right, NOT a G-6. that means your up against probably the fastest and best climbing 109 in the war. Your NOT going to out climb or outrun it in a mustang. Get your nose down for speed and make sure you start evasives long before he gets withing 1k.

Any guesses who Greycap was? <G>

Aircat, fly the Me 109 for a while and see if you can catch P-51's!

I find the 51 to be a great plane. I seem to have no problem out running spits, 109's and La5n's. I do not have to much time in them though, so I'll give it from the perspective of being in a 109.
First off, I have NEVER managed to outrun a 51 in a long chase. Now in a short chase, and while I still have more E than my target, I'll catch a 51. Also many times in a low alt turn fight, I have had 51's out turn my 109 even though I had 25% left (and no drop tanks). Its rare but it happens, I attribute it to me being in a low E state, because thats when it happens.
A common thing I see 51 pilots do, is get in a very tight sissors fight, then realize "this isnt gonna work", after that most 51 pilots seem to either try climbing, or doing a hard break turn. Neither of those work well against the 109. I think I have only passed a 51 once in a very steep dive. And even though I was going faster, he actually had control of his plane.
Also I have seen a 51 pilot flying it like the "runstang" it is, no one was able to touch him.
I cant say I've even fought you, nor do I know how good you are, maybe your just unlucky? Maybe your just bad at judging other people'e E states? Or maybe your control setup is messed up and you cant set your throttle to full? What you could do, is just fly a few other planes for a while, and see if you still have the same problem.

(BTW the P51 does seem a bit weak in climb, but not by too much)

Not meaning to argue.
but from what I am told the P51 wasn't the fastest prop plane in the war? I do believe that the last spitfire type during the war had a transrotating prop. This was faster than the P51D but also a whole pile more manoeuvrable  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

P47M was faster too.

I ran into soem REAL good Rook P51 pilots
last evening. In a low and slow turn fight
with me in a Spit they would point the nose
high (45deg) and hang on the prop leaving me in the dust after a while.

It's either me and I've yet to get good with trim and prop management or the P51 has some sweat spot for climbing that some folks have found. They werent' pulling a rope-a-dope on me as they had been turning with me literally on the deck just prior and I was quite close on thier tail (300 yds).

Faster props than the P-51D:

Planes that saw combat:
F4U-4
Ta 152H
P-47M
P-47N
Spitfire XIV
Me 109K-4

Tempest Mk. V, P-47D, Fw 190D-9, P-63C, and P-38L were faster at some altitudes.

Planes that were in service but didn't see combat:
P-51H
F8F
F7F
Do 335

Did the Pfeil see service? Do you know the details?

Of course by far the fastest thing around was the Me163 Komet - it's top speed was 960kph(596mph), when it entered compression in level flight!

Well the Do 335 service is a little sketchy...  It was in production, and the Luftwaffe was using it in a training or test unit.  Nobody claimed a kill with it or of it, and it was only sighted by the Allies once.  But since any German plane that left the hangar after 1943 was "in combat", I put it on the list.   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

Just once? Clostermann talks about sighting it and leaving a detailed report, and then of another pilot of his or a nearby squadron (can't remember which) downing one.

Just checking.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
