I just recently stumbled across an AOPA article presenting a brief description of the latest airbag concept designed by a NASA engineer. Unlike traditional airbags, this particular model is made of Kevlar and is referred to as a, "deployable energy absorber." The absorber is attached to the undercarriage of a helicopter where initial tests have determined it being successful at absorbing severe crash forces.

Seems promising... For those who will be able to afford it.
