Title: Selling my firebird... very sad
Post by: eagl on December 18, 2009, 09:47:33 PM
I'm selling my firebird tomorrow... Very sad about it.  It was my first new car and I loved it.  Drove it for 12 years, raced it occasionally for a few seasons.  I paid attention to keeping it maintained and in return it never let me down.  At 136k miles it still outruns new mustang GTs while getting 28mpg on highway trips.  At least the kid buying it knows what he's getting...  He said it is his dream car and he wants to keep it nice.

I've often read posts where you mentioned your FB, and every time I do it reminds me of how much I loved mine.  My first new car was a Firebird as well, a 1998 WS6 Ram Air, Green.  I was driving a 95 Stealth R/T Turbo that decided to catch fire one day and the Firebird sort of fell into my lap after a guy I knew who bought it to race it was killed.

The car had no power windows or locks, or anything, just the most bare bones WS6 you could buy.  Even the shift lever was a tiny little grey piece of knobby leather the size of a silver dollar or so.  Even still, it was by far THE best vehicle I ever owned, the 1st to 4th lockout not withstanding.  Excellent power, crisp..very crisp handling with the 275's all around.  Impossible to believe economy in 6th gear at 1500 RPM on the highway.  How GM ever went broke building such an excellent vehicle is beyond me.

I recently drove a new Camaro.  For the money, which isn't that much more than what a similar car cost in 98, it's simply amazing.  My next new purchase for certain.

My sympathies on your car, had to do it myself a few times, did you get anything to replace it.

On a happier note...

My first was a 1992 Dodge Daytona IROC. V6, manual transmission, and RED.

I miss that car.

Uhhh.. dude, I hope it was "selll the car or somebody dies".  I can't think of any other reason to part with such a car.

:( makes me sad. My first car was a 66 chevy 2 with a 454 blown out. I decided to pull out of a parking lot on to a main road spinning the tires and ran it under a 4x4 and destroyed the front of it. 600+ HP for a 17 y/o is a bit much. so im glad it happened. id probably be dead now.

I "replaced" the firebird with a Pontiac G8 GT...  361hp from an LS-2 derivative engine.  4 doors, faster and roomier than a 5-series BMW, but it was an "orphan" sort of car even before Pontiac was taken out behind the barn and put down, so it has some quirks that probably won't ever get fixed.

Still...  A roomy 4-door sedan that looks great, handles very nicely, and has a big LS series V8...  It's the grown-up version of the firebird :)

My poor beat-up beast: 1979 Firebird Trans Am. 403c.i.d. 6.6 Litre Oldsmobile V8, TH350 Tranny, and in need of a lot of restoration. No $$ to get it done, though.

more familiar to what yer goin thru than I'd like.

Sold off so many due to circumstances beyond my control.. I tell myself they were 'just a car' ..

.. ya

..with so many great memories and times.

I scare myself when I think of the Duster .. first fired it up in 1976.
33 years ago. Holy *crap*
Last time down the track in it was Oct, 1991.
Was my last 'project car', built from a collection of parts.
I useda love the music it made reflected back off the cars around me at any stoplight.

Had to sell it when I could not find a job ..sold the house too, moved to Phx, went to college,
earned a spot at Kesmai with what I learned in college :)

.. but I still miss that car.

Truly sad...  Most of the Firebird angst is kind of pathetic, but some of the early birds really were beutiful...

LOL. My first brand new car was a Fiat Punto. Not quite the same. The G8 - that's the rebadged Holden right? My old man has one of the Vauxhall branded versions in the UK. He loves it but lordy it cost him a fortune in gas. Great car.

Yea, the G8 is a modded holden.  They reworked the exterior and tossed in some US specific stuff.  They needed to spend another 6 months to a year on it though, since some things are really rough.  For example...

1.  Front end suspension is marginal on harmonic dampening.  Anything at all starts to go bad, including tire/wheel balance, bushings, etc., and the steering wheel starts to wobble.
2.  No GPS nav because they were in too much of a hurry to move the AC vents 2 inches so they could move the radio up into the allowable viewing angle range for US market.
3.  On-Star system electronics (2 2-inch deep boxes) are clipped to the roof of the trunk right at the opening, where they interfere with loading luggage.
4.  Bluetooth only made it into the very last half-year refresh production cars.

Even though they made a lot of them and didn't take any effort to make it collectable, I think the GTX will in fact be a bit of a collectors car.  It has over 400hp and came in both manual and auto, and I think people will start specifically looking for those cars on the used market in a few years when the revised CAFE rules kill off the taurus SHO and the fast Dodges.
