Title: VF-17 Jolly Rogers Recruiting
Post by: TheBug on December 19, 2009, 03:05:32 PM
(http://home.windstream.net/hensons/VF17/Images/Vf17wiki.gif) (http://www.vf17.org/)

The VF-17 Jolly Rogers are recruiting pilots interested in US Naval Aviation.
New pilots and vets equally welcomed.
We do ask you be 18 years of age and have an account with HTC.

We have three scheduled Squad Nights per week:
Sundays 8:00 PM EST Wednesday 8:00 PM EST as well as Friday Nights when we participate in Friday Squadron Ops (http://ahevents.org/fso-related/friday-squad-ops-welcome.html)

Outside of FSO operations, Axis vs Allies arena and other special events, we require that our pilots spend their time in US Navy rides exclusively(Buffalo, Wildcat, Hellcat, Corsair, Dauntless and Avenger).  For bomber operations we do allow our pilots to fly the B25's and B24's since these were present in navalized versions.
There are no restrictions on GV Operations.

Each pilot in VF-17 is assigned to a  Flight or Division (http://home.windstream.net/hensons/VF17/flight.html) within the squad. Each pilot also has his own  Pilot's Page (http://home.windstream.net/hensons/VF17/thebug.html) on the website with a personal aircraft and a list of his FSO accomplishments as well as his awards and medals. Visit the VF-17 Website (http://www.vf17.org/) and tour each link to get an idea if VF-17 is the squad for you. We offer a great mix of fun and competition in VF-17.

If you are interested please feel free to come wing up with us anytime.  You can find us flying for Knights, just tune Voxx 173.  Best chance to find us online is during the squad nights listed above, but feel free to stop in anytime and see if the Jolly Rogers are up.  Or click on the recruiting poster below and sign up!

Excellent group! Excellent squad!  :aok

Hey Bug, how do you track the kill streak in FSO? Just go from frame to frame and if they die that ends their streak? What if they are assigned bombers? Do you only track it or count it if they are in a fighter? I ask because I have tracked my squadies stats for the last few years in FSO. I lump fighters and bombers together. You gave me an idea for just tracking fighter stats. For example here is 2010 so far.

Your streak carrys over from frame to frame and month to month as long as you're not killed or captured.
When in buffs we don't count deaths or captures against your streak.Once your streak ends you start another one your best streak is always displayed. If you go to the flight deck section of our website www.vf17.org and click on any pilots page you'll see each member has a personal page and aircraft. Your best kill streak is displayed on your page and aircraft. Here's Wolfie's page as an example.

http://home.windstream.net/hensons/VF17/wolfie.html

Or look at Branch's if you prefer Hellcats.

Oh yeah... Thanks for the plug.  :aok

Yeah we need someone to keep up with the new guy Atticus that we just promoted so you need to bounce your butt back to the ready room and let Shifty know that you are ready for some flight ops training and plane waxing.

BTW Bonesaw...aka whiteman/Tex01 is the CO and I am just hanging out and being a back up to the other 3 backups in the FSO in case something goes REALLY bad and they have all died before me in the frame. THEN AND ONLY THEN will I be allowed to lead the squadron again...my choice...you guys made me go gray EARLY!!!!

Come on back Talliven. We need another old hand to fly with me. It would be nice to have a retired plankowners section in the squadron. The website is www.vf17.org and there are a good group of guys in the squadron and we have simple set of rules...Fly the Navy birds in the main arenas and fly AvA and FSO when you can. We have an FSO frame coming up this Friday if you get the itch to reup AH before then let us know and we can get you guys an invite if you want to play bait for the rest of us regulars.

Already have the book; I bought it several years ago when founded VF-17.

Now if it was for sale I would seriously look into mortgaging EVERYTHING for this one.

You gotta love the sounds that the full size monster makes on start up. Also isn't it amazing how short the takeoff run was in this video.

Presenting .....

Ike Kepford, VF-17's leading ace!

Ira Cassius Kepford was born on 29 May 1919 in Harvey, Illinois, son of George Raymond and Emma McLaughlin Kepford. He was a star halfback at Northwestern University, where he joined the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1941. He was honorably discharged from the Reserve on 29 April 1942, and accepted an appointment as a Naval Aviation Cadet.

Kepford earned his wings at Corpus Christi, Texas and Miami, Florida on 5 November 1942, and was assigned to Fighting-17 the following January.

In the Battle of the Solomon Sea, Kepford pressed through blistering AAA fire from the Bunker Hill to down four enemy aircraft and damage a fifth, for which he was awarded the Navy Cross.

On 29 January, Kepford led his wingman in an attack on 12 Japanese fighters over Rabaul; he scored four kills, and was awarded a Gold Star, for this action.

While returning to base on 19 Febuary 1944, Kepford spotted a low Japanese seaplane. Although he was alone (his wingman was forced to abort earlier, and Kepford was retained to cover bombers on-route to Rabaul), Kepford dived down and flamed the plane. He was then attacked by a flight of three Zekes, which dived onto him with a massive altitude advantage. Kepford took full advantage of the newly-installed water injection WEP to stretch out the chase, but the Zekes' energy advantage allowed them to slowly narrow the gap. As the lead Zeke opened fire, Kepford decided to "go for broke." He dropped his flaps and landing gear and nosed down until he was skimming the waves; as the Zeke roared over him, he pulled his Hog's nose up and opened fire. The Zeke's stabilizer crumpled under the snapshot, and the plane crashed into the waves. As Kepford pulled in his gear and flaps, the remaining two Zekes bracketed him . . . he was facing 2-to-1 odds, low and slow, and he was heading back in the direction of Rabaul. Kepford ran his throttle as far open as possible, and after gaining some speed he cut across the path of the port Zeke. The Japanese plane dropped to wavetop level, opened fire, and sharply turned to fall onto his six . . . at which point the Zeke's left wing caught a wave top, and the plane cartwheeled across the ocean surface, disintegrated, and sank. The third Zeke was left behind as Kepford dashed for home, landing on fumes in his fuel tank.

Kepford returned to the States in March of 1944, and was assigned to Fleet Air Command at Alameda, California. In June, he was tranferred to VF-84. In December, he was attached to the Staff of Commander Fleet Air, West Coast, where he served the remainder of WWII. Kepford retired from the Navy with the rank of Lieutenant Commander on 1 June 1956.

In his five months of combat duty, Ira Kepford scored a total of 16 confirmed kills and 1 uncomfirmed. He was awarded the Navy Cross, the Gold Star, the Silver Star, three Distinguished Flying Crosses, the Air Medal, Unit Commendation to VF-17, and the American Defense Service Medal.

Well hell, somewhere along the line someone changed the lock on the regular squadron one.  ;)

"Toward the end of their stay at Espiritu Santo, they realized they had a problem - 148 cases of beer they had
acquired. Transport by ship was out of the question; it would be a 100% loss. Finally Hal Jackson, the
scrounger, figured that the roomy ammunition cans inside the F4Us could hold a lot of beer. A little arithmetic
indicated that if each of the Corsairs carried one-third of its ammo capacity, the beer could fit in the remaining
space. Blackburn confirmed that 24 Corsairs, thus armed, could deal with any possible Jap(anese) opposition. When
they arrived at Bougainville, each pilot gave his plane captain a can opener and invited him to have a cold
one."  :D

Hi,

I'm looking for a Friday Night Squad.

I like cv ops.  Would like to find a group that flies like a military flight unit does.

Been with Aces High 3 or 4 years.

I'm age 58.  Was Navy many years ago.

Think I will just look you guys up in arena and fly with you awhile; see if we have like compatibility.

Widewing taught me how to land on a cv.

Cheers.

Well if its human hair you need to be a bit more specific there Diablo! Sometimes we only use nasty, sweaty hooker bush hair....that is when we couldn't get hair from Shifty or TheBug...but now that they went back to JG11 we need someone else in the squadron to volunteer.
