Can a skin from an aircraft variant we do not have in game be substituted onto the nearest version we do have?
IE there are some COOL P38M skins (night fighter variant). The only difference between it and the L is a radar pod, and a jumpseat added...
Would LOVE to skin one of these as the paintjhobs are jsut slick as heck looking...

in some instances yes, like the ki-84. But a crossover from the M to L is a no

Hey Sol,
I think the general rule is, if the variants are basically physically identical, than yes, and if not (such as a radar pod) then no. When in doubt, always a good idea to fire off an e-mail to Skuzzy to double check.
I know for instance P-38M is NOT allowed. P-51B and P-51C are both allowed for the 51B.
I'd say when in doubt, unfortunately, the answer is likely no.

What is and isn't allowed is a bit of a grey area.
Generally if the variant is a different shape externally it is not allowed. Yet I was allowed to skin an La-5F onto the La-5FN skin even though the 5F has a slightly different shaped air scoop and exhaust port to the 5FN. However the earlier La-5 variant is not allowed as the canopy and rear fuselage is a completely different shape to the 5F or 5FN.
The other issue is whether HTC are likely to introduce that variant into the game later on. So it was never allowed to skin a P-47M onto the P-47D-40 shape even though they were externally identical since HTC always had plans to introduce the M at some point.
Another issue is the use the plane was put to in RL. For example you can skin a USMC (land based) Buffalo but not a USN (carrier based) one, since the AH Buffalo does not have an arrestor hook and so is not available from carriers.
As Knite said, if in doubt ask Skuzzy.

Would a P38J-25 go on a J or an L?

Think about it....
wrongway

I'm aware of the fact that they share the same letter...
The J-25 introduced the dive flaps, leading edge landing light, and the boosted ailerons. Our J is a J-15 I think? And such it has none of those features. The L in real life, and in game, has the dive flaps, leading edge landing light, and boosted ailerons.
So my question is would a J-25 skin go on our J, the model that shares the letter, or on the L, the model that shares the same features.

J skins go on Js, L skins go on Ls.
Doing it any other way would make it more complicated than it needs to be for Skuzzy to keep track I'd think. I'm pretty sure that 1 or 2 of our J's are actually J-25s as well.
