Title: Long island snowstorm.
Post by: sandwich on December 19, 2009, 08:20:11 PM
It's a blizzard in New York, And not upstate either.

The worst of it is yet to come.

Anyone else in the northeast enjoying the weather?

It is coming down super hard, I live in Centereach, Long island. Probably the heaviest snow I have seen in 6-7 years here.

I'm about 3 or 4 miles east-northeast of you. Agree, very heavy snow with high winds. As wicked as I've seen it.....

Centereach officially has 24.4" of snow. Selden has 26.1" and Terryville (where I live) has 25.5". (that's between 61 and 66 centimeters for those in SE Britain horrified at 10 cm). It's still snowing too.

Drifts between the cars are almost rooftop height. My jeep is down near the bottom of the driveway (steep hill, double-wide, 50 feet long). We have talked for years about buying a snow blower... Never did. So, it's shovel time. At least, I've got all day to get it done.

We got about 5 inches here in putnam county.  It's about time you islanders get a taste of some real snow.

Actually, we get storms like this just about every year. Just not this early in the season. Several years ago, a storm dumped 31 inches here. :O

I know wide just breaking them a little bit.   We rarely get a miss like this one.  So I want to rub it in a bit.  I'm only a 2 hours from you but it can be a world apart in the winter and even summer.

Took a little less than two hours to shovel out the entire driveway by hand. Faster than the guy across the street was, and he has a snow blower.

That Suzuki Grand Vitara was shockingly good in the snow. The Jeep was unstoppable. I towed out several stuck neighbors. One decided to venture out in her Toyota Solara. She tried to follow tire tracks made by 4x4s, but attempting to turn resulted in getting into 2+ feet of snow. Some neighbors tried to dig her out to no avail. I pulled her out, and down the street to her house.

Nice Pics Widewing! Cool whitte Xmass!
4x4s are the best in snow, heavier better, i would add some extra weight.
I remember you posted some pics with your  Green neighbour, having his house decorated with 1000s of lights and a Hybrid on the driveway,  :lol  How was he doing in snow? did you tow him? :lol

Yes, our first white Christmas here in a long time. In 2000 or 2001, we have a storm hit Christmas afternoon, but that was too late. The last white Christmas we had before that was in 1992. However, that was just a 2" dusting.

That crazy guy changed the light color, but not the "every square inch" layout. Now he has it flashing in a strange pattern guaranteed to uncover latent epilepsy. His roof lighting was buried under the snow, but I figure he has enough wattage to melt a glacier, so the snow should disappear quickly.

Ok gents fyi I drive truck and had a load going to DC and the load originated in Aberdeen MD. Needless to say it took me 6.5 hours to travel 99 miles. I went around the beltway and needless to say I have never seen so many schmucks in such a small area. Now I know why I don't like big cities when it snows. The whole trip was in vain, all the stores I was delivering to were closed.
If I remember right they got 23 inches in dcnand some of the surrounding towns got more.
I have a vid on my "crackberry" and will post it as soon as I get home of the driving conditions.
Till then have fun and stay safe.
