Title: Can we have our hills back?
Post by: Ruler2 on December 21, 2009, 01:28:28 PM
What happened to all the little hills and valleys on the ground in the last terrain? They were GREAT for gvs, you could use em for vantage points, ambushes, and extreme air in m8s. :D
GVing really isn't the same without the hills and old trees anymore, you can see everyone coming when they up, but you cant shoot em because the trees are in the way, not to mention they have nothing to get behind for cover or camo like hills!  I believe a lot of GVers will agree with me on this issue, so can you give us back our hills please?  :pray

Which terrain? There are differences between maps you know.

Yes I know there are differences, but there are no hills on any of them now.  I'm not talking about the mountains and large hills, I'm talking about the little ones we used to have.

Back before the last overhaul there were those triangular hills that we used to use for cover in Tank Town...nowadays you are hopeless.

I am ambivalent one way or the other about bringing them back. I GV a lot, and actually enjoy the lack of cover we have now.  It creates some great run and gun GV fights.  Camping is limited a bit, because it is harder to find a good hull down position.  You can find good hiding spots, but not a lot of cover.

Ah heck, +1

I've been having fun putting my tank in 4th gear and shooting on the run...sitting in one spot makes you a target, just like a sniper would be only...you're bigger and you fire tracers.

They also took away the trees around TT... they have been replaced with a bunch of junky palm trees that let you see gvs but not shoot em  :cry

The hill objects still exist in the terrain editor.  All it would take is HTC to put the back onto the default terrain tiles.  I really can't figure out why they were taken out.  Took a lot away from the ground war experience IMO.

Also a +1 to OP. Bring back hills as it has really made gv'n less fun IMO.

I can agree where it encourages the run and less camping, but it also leaves NO cover for those long range campers.

If the hills were put back you could still gun and run.  You'd just also have the choice of hull down.  In fact the hills would help gun and run as they would protect you occasionally.  Hull down does not necessarily equate with camping, or even with defensive posture.  You can leap frog from one hull down position to a forward one.

They will return, when I was writing the new terrain engine I ran into a snag with the small hills making them look correctly with the terrain texturing on the hills. At the time we were knee deep in just getting the new system sorted out, so I put that feature on hold. I have the system worked out how to handle them in my head now, so they will return.

I am bringing this thread back up. I was a bit disappointed it was not re implemented in the new patch but would still like this.

yeah, now all I got are trees that stop my rounds, but theirs go straight through.... so basically no cover.

Funny thing about the trees and bushes, or any object for that matter...before it's rendered on your screen it doesn't stop bullets...when you're sitting in a patch of trees and someone from a long distance gets a hit on you, they don't see the trees on their screen and something in the code says if you don't see them, they don't exist...what's really puzzling is if the foliage the tank is hiding in isn't visible because of distance or angle or whatever, why is the tank visible?
