Title: LA-5
Post by: Werewolf on November 09, 1999, 04:11:00 AM
Just one question regarding the La-5. One of my books (World War II Aircrafts by Alan Munson) states that the La-5 was able to carry two 150 kg bombs.
Anyone got the same information? If it proves the information is right, will we have them added to the La-5?

Werewolf,
It's true, they could carry two bombs in that weight range, like 100kg, or four 50kg bombs, perhaps.  However, La-5FN's, and the La-7 of 1944 were generally not used in a ground support capacity, because the oil cooler was below the nose, and tended to get hit a lot from groundfire.  The only fighters(this includes lend lease too) that did ground support to any great degree were the I-153, I-16, Yak-1, Yak-7, and LaGG-3.  Most other fighters tended to do ground support at times, but very infrequently.  Also, I suspect that the La-5FN's limited range, even by Soviet standards, detracted from its use in that capacity.

If I'm going to do ground support give me a Il-2, Pe-2, Tu-2 or even a Yak-7 or I-16.

How about a Yak-9K with the 45mm cannon!

Bad Omen,

A good choice.  My choice in that category is the Yak-9T with 37mm.
