Title: If bears could fly-------
Post by: 1Boner on December 26, 2009, 08:24:34 PM
Pilots would be in BIG trouble.

I think a bear did more damage to this plane than a few 20mm shells would have!

The story I read about these pictures goes something like this:

These guys were on a fly in fishing trip somewhere north of bumfart Alaska.

They left a cooler with some bait in the plane.

Big mistake.

These guys radioed one of their buddies to fly them in a new set of tires , a roll of plastic and 3 cases of duct tape. (standard issue S.A.P.P. equipment) :salute

They put the gun back in its holster and flew home for a lovely fish dinner! :bolt:

I've read of much worse repairs...  One guy (Reeves) would repair minor tears/rips in his plane with cloth strips and water...  The water would freeze as solid and tight as the usual dope and paint repair, and he could keep flying without making a long term repair until the weather got above freezing a few months later.

ROFL  Looks like Red Green fixed it.  I'd like to see the 337 for that.

The tail number written on with sharpie in the last photo takes it from 'awesome' to 'amazing'. These pictures are great :D

Thats it.  we need duct tape on AH to fix any damage on our AC.

Duct Tape fixes all problems! On Mythbusters they used 99 stripes of tape to lift a car off the ground for over 2 minutes before it broke! They also fixed a hole in a boat, and even made a WHOLE BOAT out of DUCT TAPE, and it worked!

How much would it suck to be stuck in the middle of nowhere because a bear ate your plane?

Now imagine having someone explain to the Darwin awards why your duct tape plane didn't fly...

I'm curious as to how a taildragger was able to maintain structural integrity, being supported mainly by duct tape, on landing...

It doesn't look like the structural integrity of the frame was compromised too much.

Looked to me like it was mainly the canvas was torn to pieces.

What I find hilarious about this was my initial thought while I was reading the thread. I said to myself, "OUCH! That's gotta stink.... Well, just get yourself some duct tape an...... Oh... Wow!"

A guy landed in Matamoros and the nose gear collapsed, on his Senaca, we welded the nose gear down.  We flew a sheet of .032 aluminum in and a case of Duct tape.  We put the .032 on the nose and wrapped it in duct tape, Dad flew it home Bent props and all.  He did say that it vibrated a bit.  I truly believe that you can fix everything with Duct tape.

It depends on how hungry the bear was AFTER eating the plane.

If you look closely(and I know that you didn't) you will see that the actual structure of the plane is undamaged..  Only the skin is torn off..  The tubing in the fuselage looks fine....
It is not being supported by duct tape and plastic..  It is merely covered in duct tape and plastic, which is a perfectly viable temporary alternative when compared to canvas given this plane and the situation..
You've been watching too much Star Trek: The Next Generation..  Structural integrity..... :rofl

Time to hijack this thread!

Let's get those squirrles up there, they'd eat the bears for breakfast!  :rofl

And we should get something special in the O'Club in the tower for it, maybe something like this!

If you look at the pictures showing the left horizonal stabilizer there is defenite structural damage. They probably had to bend it back or possibly replace the frame there otherwise it would have created a drag and trim problem.

Fuselage is also tweaked. Look at the last 2 pix and you can see it is no longer symmetrical on both sides. It looks like some of the structure leading back to the left side stabilizer has been bent or broken in addition to the damage to the right stabilizer. That little Piper was pretty well munched up there. I sure would not want to ferry it back.
