Well, every year, FA sends out out a "reunion" email for a free week sub to those of us that have left for greener pastures. This year I thought I would give it a go. i heard that there were "upgrades" to the graphics, etc.
All I can say is Uhg, never again. FA email addy has been added to the spam list.
Graphics are no better IMO and gameplay/flight modeling in the most popular arena is comical. I did fly in the "advanced" arena but no one else would bother coming in.
Ehh, to each their own, but I'll never be heading back there. Will keep the squad place holder open although I don't see any of them coming in.

totally agree torcher.
I've used this opportunity to try and recruit, have to do it sly otherwise i'll get PPS all over me and banned in an instant for having an opinion :D
It is an arcade game. it isn't a bad game but we are lucky enough to have seen how great Aces High is and what outstanding work Hitech and Crew have done over the last 5 years.
-
What? FA is still alive? Wow.
-
FA is really just an arcade arena with less than 100 people on at a time. BUT, I was them the last time they did a Pearl Harbor Scenario, and it was a blast. A good 500 people all together there, and it was set up pretty good. But, I think that's the only time the players really come out to play the game I guess.
-
One of the last scenarios I was able to participate in in FA was my favorite of all time.
Battle of Kursk.
I was in LJK way back then and we were tasked with hitting some deep points to trigger Soviet reinforcements instead of the front line troops releasing on our assaults across the front. Anyway we hit our primary, secondary and tertiary targets on time and triggered the soviet responses to all of them to open up the front for an all out assault by the Wehrmacht. One reason we had limited kills I think that all together we only had 6 or 7 kills out of 18 of us is that we were always a step ahead of the VVS in reaching, hitting and exiting the area. The only time we didn't get it was when command sent us out to hit a fourth target about 4 hours into the scenario and we ran into a VVS raid of about 30 planes evenly distributed between bombers and fighters heading into our AO so we dumped ordinance and got to tangling with the bad guys. At the end of it most of us reached home damaged and with our kills. Thus ending my best FA and AH scenario experience EVER!
I remember getting one or two kills flying in 190A model but we flew for probably 5 hours that day. It was great since I had ZERO wife or kid AAA and it was raining like crazy that day so I didn't want to be outside.

I always see folks talking about all these other internet flight sims. I guess I didn't see them past the first hit when I put in "online air combat games" (AH was first on the list :D). Been hooked ever since (3 yrs now)
 :salute

One of the very few things that FA did well was blowing up bases. You could drop big bombs and create huge craters that stayed there for a while. You could not taxi in or out a runway with those cool looking huge crater holes all over the place. Damage to runways in AcesHigh is nonexistent.
The dogfight arena in FA where everyone flew was horrible (lev1 I think). There was very little gravity, you could get in circle fights for 5 mins and never loose energy. So all the 'Generals' would fly zeros and use the padlock feature in circle fights to kill the noobs in bigger planes. The high level dogfight room (lev5 I think) was pretty cool and not too arcade-like but hardly any of those losers were good enough to fly there with the gravity enabled. One good guy in a spit could own the entire room.

I have fond memories of FA - it's what first got me hooked to the online combat flightsim genre.
... but, memories are memories, nothing more

So FA had more "game the game" types from your "description". BTW, when I first started in AH, runways craters affected takeoff/landing.

Now I see why AH is doing so well.

fly there with the gravity enabled.

FA 3.5 was the first "Combat Flight Sim" game I played, a friend gave me the CD, I played off line for about a month, what was cool was the AI fought ya if you played the "Bomber" mission, the escorts would attack ya, if ya chose the "fighter" mission they would fly in circles and not attack :rofl (sound familiar), at first the AI escorts kicked my butt, in about a month I would select 5 escorts,(thats the highest it would allow) put there skill at "General" (think thats what it was) and whip there butts, when you killed the first 5, 5 more would spawn, lol after awhile the AI just couldn't kill me, Thats when my landlord let me try "HIS" Flight sim "Aces High" Hooked ever since. :aok
-
lol Fighter Ace, we might as well be talking about CFS3 for all I care. AH2 > all flight sims!
-
I flew FA before i joined Aces high. Dogfights were a -1. Bombing Bases was kool because of the huge craters, but most airfields only have a small patch of land to take off from. Graphics in planes scored 3.5/5 on the offical Flight sim score.

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhh! :devil

<< came over from FA years a go.

Interesting timing on this thread.
Someone mentioned "FA Korea" in another thread a while back. I had no idea what this was referring to so I did some creative google hunting that eventually led me to the Fighter Ace website.
I have to say that the whole Korea thing "sounded" very cool. I'd like to see Korea even worse than WW1 in an online flight sim. So, I browsed the site some, went to the forums...and that was enough. Their general discussion forum had like 2 posts a month. I thought, "wow, real active community you guys have here".
Somehow I figured the game wasn't really a competitor to Aces High. Seems like I called it right.
I'd still love to fly a MiG-15 around though. :airplane:

Numbers usually show interest in anything. If someone really likes an era they would fly in most any arena that had those aircraft.
WWII is a popular era for aircraft.... others... not so much.
-
Former Fighter Ace guy here to...back in the late 90's. Was in a squad....Pshyco for a CO and I didn't last that long.
Came over to AHI after that and haven't been back to FA since.
Bout the best part of the FA place back when I flew was the furball areas. Cadet / Major room was always a blast. I had to go to another room and crash 100 planes one night to lose my general rank so I could go back in there. If ya made general they would tell you to leave the room. Was funny. Go to the empty room...crash a 100 times back to major...back in the room and rack up kills. Make genral again. Rinse and repeat.

AW had something similiar with the Newbie arena. After you hit 10,000 points, guns were disabled on any plane you took off in and all you could do is fly around and be a target.
ack-ack

Wow that is a really, really bad idea.
