Title: B17 Flight Model Redux
Post by: Gerd on December 06, 2000, 07:58:00 PM
I had to canvas my bomber pilots to get a definitive answer from a pro regarding turbos. here's one response:

-------------

Turbocharger boost was necessary to get a fully loaded  B17 into the air. Using 100 octane gas we could boost manifold pressure to 54 inches of mercury, which is approximately double normal sea level atmospheric pressure . Control was automatic, preset by electronic setting  prior to takeoff. I believe 54 inches of mercury was rated as "War Emergency Power"  Models before G or H had unreliable hydraulic controls.

Best that an 81 year-old, broken down old pilot can remember.

Hope it helps

Bob

------

I didn't know there was an "H" model.

Thanks,

Gerd

Hmmm.

B-17G in AH runs at a maximum of 48 inches MAP.

The B-17F R-1820-97 engine chart at Zenos says that 46 inches was "takeoff" and "military" power, 1200HP. It doesn't have an entry for "WEP" which was 1380HP.

I guess that begs the question: Is the MAP gauge missing 6 inches or are the engines actually missing 180HP?

It also has fighters that climb at over 10,000fpm, and a P-38 with no gunsight because the developer says it didn't have one in RL...

SKurj yeah they do. They're called turbo lasers  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif).

b17h was a conversion of some b17gs for seaborne search and rescue.  They carried a big yellow lifeboat under them and had defensive armament removed.

By the way, my pilots were members of the 486th Bombardment Group (Heavy). I'm the webmaster and historian. You can check us out at www.486th.org (http://www.486th.org)

I enjoy this game tremendously. You've done a great job with this sim.

Any way we can get the Fort markings changed to represent the 486th? ;-)

<S>! Gerd, to you and your mates.

I second the request (maybe for the B24?).
