Title: So...a new decade
Post by: Spikes on December 31, 2009, 01:03:35 PM
What have you done in this decade? Any goals you would like to do in the next?

I know I'll get a lot of "paid bills" responses...

I got ten years older. In the next decade, I plan on reversing that horrifying trend.

New decade, old decade. Same miserable crap just with a "1" in front of the other digits.

I retired and spent the last half decade touring the US full time. While doing that I have also been with the Patriot Guard and rode on many of their missions both as funeral escort as well as welcome home and send offs. Lots of troops to shake hands, thank and express support for.

The wife and I have each had to deal with cancer and move on over that particular bump in the road. There are grand kids to spoil, fish to catch, hunting trips to go on and lots of this country yet to explore.

It works for me.

2000-2009

10 years  :D

The first decade A.D. was Jan, 0001 - Jan, 0011 (That's 10 years.)

Jan 2000 - Jan 2010 is ten years but it's not the start of the decade.

The decade starts on the year 1 as in 2011.

Only the first year in the decade is complete in 2011. because even though we are saying jan 1st of 2010, it is really the 1st day in the 11 year.

Yes/NO

We count the year after its done is the easy way to look at it.

Anyway i want to build a house for my wife. Watch my kids grow up to adults. the youngest will be 18 in ten more years.
Get the wife to go skinny dipping. ahh is that to much info. :D

If the dating system started AD then it includes year 0.

ie first decade would be Jan 0000 til Dec 0009.

You can't just skip year 0!

2000 to 2009

Got Married
Had twins ( boy and a girl )
Bought a house
Got a great job to pay for all of the above
Buried my dad
Saw my country attacked
Saw my country go to war
Shattered my lower leg ( literally, i have a metal rod in it now )
Shot the biggest deer of my life
Took my son and daughter hunting for the first time
Finally bought my wife diamond earings.
Started playing AH
Made many new friends because of an online video game

Many highs and lows this past decade, Hoping for a smooth and " middle of the road" next one.

Happy New Year gents

I finished elementary and middle school this decade. I will finish high school and college in the next decade and if all goes well, then in 4-5 years I will be in the US Naval Academy and then a 2nd Lt. in the USMC.

No...I'm saying that counting from 0 to 10 is different from counting from 1 to 10.

Every year is the start of a new decade but when you're talking about calendar decades, centennials, millenium it starts from 1 not 0 because you're counting from the year 1 not 0.

The first decade 0001-0011 (10 years)
The first century 0001-0101 (100 years)
The first millenium 0001-1001 (1000 years)

You don't reach 2 millenium (2000 years from 0001 to 2001), 1 decade (10 years) until Jan 1, 2011

Hmm.  This decade ended with the worst year of my life.

I got passed over for promotion twice in 10 months, so I'll be a Maj until retirement.
My last 2 grandparents died.
I buried my younger brother and discovered that my Dad is a real jerk.
I hurt my knee and it isn't getting any better after a year.
I discovered I have an irregular heartbeat that won't ground me unless I bring it up again.
I had to put over $10,000 in repairs into my house, with another $10,000 needed.
I had to sell my first ever new car even though I still enjoyed driving it, and there was nothing wrong with it except that it won't hold 2 child seats.
My back hurts almost as much as it did before my surgery 6 years ago.
While dealing with the irregular heartbeat, I gained back 10 of the 20 lbs I lost in 2007.
I had the best job in the squadron, gave it up to help the career of another officer, but just 2 months later he went on a 1 year deployment so some guy in the reserves who already had that awesome job 2 years ago gets to do it again, while I do grunt work.

And those are the high points.  It's been a crummy year, good riddance.  The only good thing that happened to me this year was the birth of my second child a few weeks ago, on Dec 7.  But that's about it.  Almost everything else sucked badly.  Worst year of my life, no question about it.

The next decade would have to involve thermonuclear warfare to be any worse.  At least I should be drawing a pension halfway through this next decade, so the house payment will be covered.

You would have been born in August of 1 B.C. or August of 1 A.D.

There is no year 0.

So what year did Christ die in? And if it was 1 A.D how could the 24th of December 1 AD really be AD because it'd be BC? So was that year both BC and AD?

According to theologists, Christ was crucified around 27 to 33 A.D.

They believe He was around 33 years old so that would put his date of birth somewhere between 6 B.C. to 1 A.D. on our calendar. You, I'm sure know, that our calendar was established hundreds of years after that event but they did the best they could based on their knowledge and math at the time.

Hmm, let's see -

I started the decade living in Germany. Moved to London in time for the dot com crash and had the rude awakening that a career in IT was not a sure thing.

I got laid off twice in six months which actually turned out to be a blessing - redundancy payments paid off credit cards and gave me a down payment for a flat. Other than mortgages, I've been debt free ever since.

In 2001, I moved back to Scotland and started work with a company that specialises in software for Intelligence and police agencies. My first day was September 8th of 2001 and was relatively quiet. I don't remember too many quiet days since.

In 2002, I met and started dating Jennifer. We got married in 2004. I could not imagine my life without her now (in a good way  :D).

In 2005, a couple of weeks after we got married, I agreed to work on a project in California for 6 months. As of today, we're still in California, have greencards and - thanks to Wall Street's attempts to destroy the economy, were actually able to afford a home which we moved in to yesterday. Could be wrong, but I think we're here for the longterm. Bloody SoCal weather spoils you.

Earlier this year I fufilled a lifelong ambition by starting to learn to fly.

To round off the decade on a high note, I became an uncle for the first time on Christmas Eve this year - my brother just sent me an amazing picture of him, his new baby, my mother and grandfather. Seeing 4  generations of your family together rocks - I miss them today.

And finally, I started playing Aces High - who knew playing a video game could have such an influence on your life  :salute 68th Lightning Lancers and everyone else I've had the pleasure of meeting online. May the coming year bring you peace, prosperity and good luck.

Regards,
68Wooley

I heard He was born in 7 or 6 B.C. The monk who created that timeline in the Middle Ages screwed up and didn't count right.  But I'm pretty sure He died in 33 A.D.

What have you done in this decade? Any goals you would like to do in the next?

I know I'll get a lot of "paid bills" responses...

The decade saw me changed a few jobs either fired or left for pastures greener.  Gave up the insecurity of car sales and the riches.  Went trucking for half the money but funny enough it's just as insecure and a lot less forefilling on the Eggo.

Saw me Mother go through another round of Cancer but thankfully recover from it.  Will never forget the well wishes folk on these boards showed. A thread about Christmass presents.

Seem the Mujaheddin turn into the Taliban 1 hour after 9/11 and was impressed with how quick the west kicked their arse.

Didn't believe any of the WMD stories  but was in favour of the  Golf War II conflict.  Thinking there's got to be a plan to keep the terrorist busy over there rather than here.

Phoned MI5 and had 8 Arab guys arrested.  Don't know the true outcome but they were not released.

Saw me Dad take 3 months to die from cancer.  Was waiting on THE phone call and was at 19k in lancs at 4am my time when he passed.   The hospital didn't phone me until the morning :(

I became ill and was misdiagnosed. Had to give up work.  Had to give up my car.  Had to use all our savings.  Had to make many cutbacks.  Got into debt.

In the last year alone ...

Became an Uncle on the 1st of Jan 09.

Could no longer manage my illness. Lapsed into a spiral of weight loss, puking, crapping and sever pain....as if it wasn't bad enough

Jan 15th was given less than a week to live if i didn't have surgery.

Recovered from the Op but had to put up with colostomy bag.  Manged incontinence is the true words.

My favourite Auntie died.

Saw my Mother showing the first signs of dementia

Gave up AH.  Was humbled my the well wishes and the charity shown me.  Thanks everyone  :salute

Had a reversal of my colostomy.  Got me old arse hole back.....very good :)

Have done a weeks casual work before being declared fit for work : )  Am fit and ready now.

And on the very last day of a bad year (2009) I lost another auntie.

****

2 days into another decade I expect to get a job hopefully before the end of Feb.  Pay of my debts.  Repay the kindness my former squaddies gave me.

Take the Mrs out a few times.  Maybe have a weekend break somewhere.

Keep up a little of my writting.

Will see my Mothers dementia grow stronger.  Will see either her or her husband (step dad) pass away.

Will become another Uncle.

Will set strong roots for retirement.

Hopefully I'll find out what I was sent here... to this planet to do.
***

For an unhappy decade prediction I think the world will see the first "dirty bomb" or chemical / biologic terrorist attack.
