So... we have a lot of hardware and software gurus online maybe one of them can tell me what the new OS is that is sweeping Japan and is destined to replace Windows? Im very interested in hearing about this one.

Not really, you're not.

I'm sure if you are hearing any Hype about a new OS ,you're hearing about Google Chrome.  While it may be a new OS, it's not a Window's replacement.

Haven't seen anything on the news sites I visit, you sure it's not another hoax?

Any OS that would dream on replacing windows would have to be 100% windows compatible. Without software an OS is useless - just look at desktop linux.

I remember seeing an Ad for it while checking my mail a while back, but the Ad looked really untrustworthy.  The link didn't even go anywhere, I just assumed it was a lie, like every other ad I see. :)

ITRON is actually the worlds most widely used OS in the world (ahead of both linux and unix) but its not new. There was a lot of speculation that sony was compiling an OS for the PS3 but I don't recall anything ever hitting the mainstream market. ITRON is not normally used for a PC and is an offshoot of TRON which dates back to the 1980's I believe. Tron was head and shoulders better then MS-DOS but the US prevented the Japanese from rolling it out in 1989 as a PC based OS (BTRON OS).

There is an ongoing flavor of ITRON that is very widely used, you can check out the T-engine forum for more 411.

Fascinating reading and thank you!  :salute

It would seem inevitable that some form of TRON will eventually beat out the MS domination of the American market.

You forgot the fact that it's designed specifically for small scale embedded architecture...i.e. electronic devices. No computer based os can compete on that small of a scale...hardware requirements are beyond what ITRON can deal with.

I'm not commenting one way or another on its current suitability for a desktop PC. Linux is far superior to either windows or MAC in many ways but very few commercial consumer apps are written for it so it has little market share. BTRON was far far superior to DOS (just as the IBM OS was far superior to windows 3.0/3.1). TRON was not designed specifically for the current ITRON applications it just evolved that way. As a counter part Android was designed for the mobile phone market but I have run more then one PC on an Android OS.

But it still didn't help you to actually read what the topic was about  :devil

I thought the topic was about a "new operating system"; however the question he posed only related to the topic IF he would have asked the question in the topic rather than the body of the first post?

Anyway just gotta be different i guess.

That's kinda like saying toilet paper is the most looked at media in the world.

No silly. Toilet paper is not used for communication... except by one ex-congressman.  :devil
