Born in Austria March 24 1924 died Dec 13 2009 father of 2 with 4 grandchildern. He arrived in America thru Ellis Island in 1927. Robert John Ivan served in the Navy as a gunner's mate 2/c. He entered the service August 27, 1943 and the following January shipped aboard the LST #41 as a fireman. They participated in the invasion of Kwajalein after which he attended gunnery school at Pearl Harbor. In March 1944, he was transferred to the 7th Flotilla and was in on the invasion of Hollandia followed by invasions of Saipan and Guam. Later he was sent on a War Bond tour to Chicago on LST 652. In November 1944 he was assigned to LST 1124(Later convereted to U.S.S. Amphitrite ARL 29) and shipped to Pearl Harbor as a gunner's mate and Acting Chief Master at Arms. He was later based in Okinawa, repairing ships and guns. He has the ATO ribbon; Asiatic-Pacific ribbon with 3 stars; and the Victory Bar. My grandfather was a true American he believed so much in this country and was a very proud veteran willing to talk to anyone willing to listen or not. He will be dearly missed.

I'm very sorry for your loss. The Vet's of that era are truly awe inspiring . My grandfather was on Kwajalein with the Marine's. These guys were so humble and modest about their service that most will never know just how much was sacrificed for later generations .

My thoughts and sincerest gratitude for your grandfathers service...during 7 years of service I have heard this played a number of times for shipmates and stangers alike. It always made my waters calm....to your grandfather I send "Three Volleys Tired...."
Navy Hymn
Eternal Father, Strong to save,
Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
Who bid'st the mighty Ocean deep
Its own appointed limits keep;
O hear us when we cry to thee,
for those in peril on the sea.
O Christ! Whose voice the waters heard
And hushed their raging at Thy word,
Who walked'st on the foaming deep,
and calm amidst its rage didst sleep;
Oh hear us when we cry to Thee
For those in peril on the sea!
Most Holy spirit! Who didst brood
Upon the chaos dark and rude,
And bid its angry tumult cease,
And give, for wild confusion, peace;
Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee
For those in peril on the sea!
O Trinity of love and power!
Our brethren shield in danger's hour;
From rock and tempest, fire and foe,
Protect them wheresoe'er they go;
Thus evermore shall rise to Thee,
Glad hymns of praise from land and sea.
