Title: View available wireless networks
Post by: Bronk on January 06, 2010, 06:24:54 PM
Ok this is strange. I can connect to the web ..well because here is this post. However I cannot view the networks. Says my signal strength is excellent but it also says no networks in range. I don't recall making any system changes. I'm blaming the wife on this one. ;) :D
Any ideas?

If you're using WPA encryption it's possible to hide the SSID on a lot of wireless routers. Check your advanced wireless connection settings and see what network you're connected to and what encryption you're using.

That's what hes saying...sometimes you can set the router to not broadcast the SSID ,but most of the time this function is disabled.

It is broadcasting.
When I click repair it fails to renew IP... if that's any clue.

You're gonna have to log into that router and check to see what encryption method is being used. It really sounds like WPA with hidden ssid...I use that setup on my wireless router. Connecting directly to the admin control panel of the router will allow you to confirm that...the other way to find the info is a bit convoluted and since I'm at the office using a Windows 7 system, I can't remember the steps.

i dont want to sound off but you say you cant see network but know it is broadcasting?? try a static IP, just an idea.
But you should really be able to see your network, I'd go and reset ssid on router and puter.

Disable the wireless.  After enabling it again it should bring up the list of available networks again.

It is not enabled. I tested using the cards software. It finds my wireless and my neighbors.  Winblows however does not. This is getting odd.

Which are you using to control wireless Bronk? If you set it to windows to control, it should pick it up. If you set it to the card software to control, that should pick it up.
Dont think you can have it set to both however - but you should get a popup saying use whichever control software you designated.

Also, might just need to recycle your WAP bud - I get this every so often, just drops off and wont pick up anything at random times.

Pretty simple mate, make sure no one is using it to connect to the internet (or wired for that matter). Unplug router, let it rest for a few seconds, plug it back in again.

Sorry, probably made it sound more technical than it is (my router/wireless has no on/off switch)..

*also, when you installed and set up, did you set it up to connect automatically? That may cause it not to show on your list of wireless connections (no idea why, just seems to happen)*

I've noticed that 3rd party software can make the wireless connection utility do some strange things.

I'd recommend you check and see if some other program hasn't taken over the connection, Dell and Linksys are well known for doing this.

I see you used the cards software to configure it..... did you disable the cards software when you enabled window to take over control of the card?  If it were me I would uninstall the wireless adapter from device manager and uninstall the cards software from add/remove software.  If you don't want to uninstall the software make sure you go into MSCONFIG and disable it from starting at startup . There are a bunch of different things it could be so this is a good start .   Question ...... have you had any spyware / malware issues recently ??

How often do you reset the router? Just by the sounds of it, probably not often. Home routers tend to require an occasional "soft reset" (remove power for a while or tap the reset button in the back) to keep functioning well. If you don't do that, they're likely to pull some very strange things, generally requiring a "hard reset" (hold down the reset button until the lights do something fancy; typically five seconds). That will restore the router to factory settings and fix whatever went haywire, so long as the hardware is okay.

I've done all that. No malware found.
I've Reset my router.

I've decided to move this PC to where my dead pc resided till I can rebuild it.
