I wouldnt mind learning a well known language common in engineering like Japanese or German though.

I got latin-america spanish, Just spent another hour on it this morning, and I was quite surprised to find out I actually remembered everything from last night  :D

When I took spanish back in high school i remember going in the next day and totally blanking on the test...but not here

Having words and phrases attached to pictures and someone actually speaking the language the correct way helps a TON

I mean thats how we all think, when someone says money a dollar bill comes to mind. Same here.

I just got half way done with Unit 1 of Level 1, theres 4 units per level...this is basics such as grammar, pronounciation, and spelling. Next unit is greetings and common phrases.

Everything in here is attached to pictures with a native speaker telling you the phrases. Its a mix of matching the picture to the correct sentence, pronouncing the words correctly and also every now and then you have to come up with a sentence to describe the picture.

Its not boring at all and I feel like i am learning alot! When im done with level 1 ill let ya know if its a must buy or not...too early to tell atm but so far it seems like the money has been worth it.

So far I honestly think I learned more in these 3 hours with this program then I did with a week in spanish class back in High School.

I have Rosetta Stone for Arabic.  The different alphabet complicates things a bit, however it's pretty good.  I do get the feeling though that it's intended for less elaborate languages.

Really?  I grew up in San Diego, and a drug dealer I personally grew up with doubled his client base by learning spanish.  For him, learning spanish was for both personal and job reasons, like the OP.  Not racism, it was good marketing and a great business decision.  And smoking/dealing pot is one of those areas where business and personal life often mix.

Seemed like an obvious answer to me.

"on principle" can mean many non-idiotic things...

I am personally not learning spanish because a great number of people who have directly influenced my life in a negative way were immigrants (both legal and illegal) who came to the place where I lived, refused to learn the native language in use in their new home after over a decade of residence, and then insisted that I learn spanish to accomodate them.

I owe them nothing and I refuse to be placed under an obligation by someone who comes to me and intentionally causes difficulties by refusing to make any attempt to adapt to their new situation and location or integrate into the society they moved into.  I didn't go to their hometown and insist that everyone there speak MY language, and I will not allow them to obligate me to comply to their imported culture.  If I wanted to speak Spanish or become a Mexican, I would move to Mexico and speak/act just like the people there.

Imagine your response if I moved next door to your house, and insisted that every street sign in your neighborhood be converted into dual-language signs, English and Russian.  Not only that, I would insist that tax dollars be used for the conversion, claim that my rights are being violated if the conversion does not take place, and accuse everyone who opposes my demands of being racist.  Of course, taking a page from your book, anyone who fails to comply "on principle" is an idiot.  And then I go to your place of business, and if you do not speak Russian to me, how would you feel if I organized a boycott of your business and repeatedly sued you for discrimination even if state law does not support my claim, costing you thousands in legal fees?

I am sure you would be irritated enough to never want to speak Russian.  That is what has happened to me, my family, and many other people I know where I grew up.  The systematic harassment of native English speakers in Southern California by immigrants who refuse to learn English is so pervasive that the California state government has spent hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars converting everything in the state to dual languages.  That was money straight out of my pocket back when I was paying Calif income tax.

To hell with them.  Immigrants who refuse to learn the language of the land they moved to have already cost me enough time/money, and I don't owe them more of my time/money from learning Spanish.  Does that mean I'm not learing Spanish "on principle", and I'm an idiot for not spending more time and money accomodating people who have already cost me time/money?

I pretty much agree, but I would like to learn it anyway. Not to accomodate them, but for my own reasons.

I tried...  Did the indian scout thing as a kid, and most of my high school history projects were on the native culture and tribes of Southern California.  Nothing I can do to change what happened those hundreds of years ago, but at least I have the good grace to acknowledge my ancestors were invaders.

I suppose you're comparing Eagl to the way the Brits adopted the Aborigine language when they settled in Australia?
I didn't realize Eagl immigrated to America during the years before English was the national language.
Nice one Eagl. I'll bet you can even spell practiced correctly. Unlike some who actually live in England. :lol

Eagl kicked off the 'I'm not going to learn Spanish on principle' rant, Shifty, not me. You presume too much. I'm British, speak English, have a li'l casa in Spain and am (painfully slowly) learning Spanish so I can join in even more fun and friendship with the local folks. You have a problem with that?

I didn't presume anything, I realize you're British and speak English. I applaud you taking the time to learn another language.  I always find it humorous when a person from the UK who's empire persecuted people on every corner of the globe scolds Americans about what happened to the American Indian. You have a problem with that? By the way.. If Eagl was born in America, he is a Native American regardless of his race. I don't know if that fact made it into your PC Thuggery book.

Shifty, if it hadn't been for the British Empire, the Thirteen Colonies of 1775 wouldn't have existed and the present main language of the USA might well be French or Spanish. Now get off your high horse and let's enjoy life.

Cheers!
