Just heard on the military channel how the term Buffs came about. Stands for Big Ugly Fat ........ You have to use your imagination. I'm probably the last hear about this..aren't I. :o
-
Never heard that one either
-
And if you continue it to spell buffet its Big Ugly Fat F;::) Eating Together
-
Well - i think they used Big Ugly Fat Fellow as well - probably moreso back in the day - but i have heard it both ways.
-
i first heard someone use that term to describe a B-52....which makes more sense IMO

That's what I heard; that the B-52 was the first to be called a buff.

NNNOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
The term "BUFF" can be traced back to RAF spitfire pilots describing the Lancasters as they watched them crossing the channel early in the war. This is according to an interview with spitfire pilots for the series Spitfire on the BBC. And yes, I am referencing a television interview.
And the brit in the interview used Big Ugly Fat Fellow.

SLUF .. aye .. you would have loved watchin the one at Edwards with the F-16 motor in it :)
They had a 'stock' SLUF begin takeoff roll and the Hot Rod alongside .. the Hot Rod crossed 10k agl before the 'stocker' had reached pattern alt.

Hiyadoin Rino :)
..and ya .. heard the 111 and the 105 both referred to as 'lead sleds' here an there .. -shrug- ..they did what they had to do tho..
..the 111 was more effective at what it did than the 105's were I gathered, from talkin to pilots who flew both..
..4 105's in on target, 1 comes out .. a hard day up North .. again.
One of the few birds I worked on that inventory decreased fairly rapidly... even after they came back to George.
We had two guys wantin to 'buzz' the lake nearby .. engine quit on one and he went into the lake.
Another was being delivered to the Guard, went in vertical somewhere in the LA Basin, pilot stayed in it to avoid a school and just barely made it out in time. .. stuff like that happened all summer long.
Worst week was losin 2 105's and an F4 ..all in 5 days of ops while I was at George.
There are no easy days on the line.
