My 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee died yesterday at the ripe old age of 170,300 miles. She threw a rod or was about to. I took her in knocking to the local garage where they said they could only save her with a transplant. Fortunately one was available. So she's getting a new engine, brand spanking new and expensive.

WOW I don't even want to guess what that one is gonna cost ya. My 1997 Grand Cherokee started acting funny with the electrical system so a friend of mine that works on them gave me an estimate to repair (it was more than the value of the vehicle IIRC about $4k) so I asked him to fix it enough for it to go through the trade in process and I got my wife a new vehicle. The repair cost me $250 and a case of beer.

It cost me more than the Jeep is worth but I don't want any car payments. Engine comes with 100,000 mile/ 36 month gurantee.

ATK reman is the way to go.
they seem to have the best warranties, and good product.
i've used them exclusively for reman engines for over 10 years, and never a problem.

Sounds like an Alaskan vehicle, no offense. Broken down but still manages to get around somehow.

The Jeep is back home! Oh boy am I happy. Except for being 3 grand lighter. Running bee U Tee Full!
Pieces of a piston could be found in the oil pan!
The mechanic went all out too. I'm very satisfied. He flushed out the oil system, transmission, and coolant system just to make absolutely sure no metal fragments remained. He had the headers milled to make sure they hadn't warped over the years. Called in a expert to get the computer synchronized. Ran the engine on the dyno or whatever they're called today to make sure everything was doing what it should. Replaced every gasket imaginable, including the intake gasket which as I understand is rarely done. Also you can add a new water pump assembly.

New engine will always have all new gaskets. Even a short block will get a new intake gasket when installing your used intake.
No flush required on a new engine. Good breakin oil with no additives.... don't forget to get that changed after breakin.

if he put a reman in the jeep, it was most likely a long block.
what this means, is that it is the complete engine assembly, minus intake exhaust, and sensors.
what generally happens, is that we pull the engine out, remove all of the periphial items, clean em, install em on the new engine, and dump it in the car.
regardless of whether or not he rebuilt yours, or did a reman, he gave you an excellent price.
glad you're happy, and that it worked out for ya. you're one of the cooler doods on the boards here.
if you have any questions about anything they did, or want to do, don;t hesitate to ask...here, or in pm, or i can even go to the point of givin ya my shop number if ya want.
:aok

I said the same thing but then he pointed out that pieces of metal could have remained in the radiator since the oil cooled via the radiator. Further he sent the oil pan out to have it cleaned.

A big :salute Thanks Cap, very kind. I sorta gave up on coolness when my hair turned white though. :rofl I may take you up on that offer at some point.
The engine is a straight 6, 4.0 litre. I don't think it's a remanufactured engine. I believe it's brand spanking new. However I could be wrong. It has powdered metal sprayed on the outside for toughness. I can't remember the process it has something to do with electro magnetic wielding. Maybe like anodizing. When I was racing motorcycles back in he day they use to gold anodize the rims. Sure don't know anything about that stuff anymore.
I checked a little on the price. Like you, they said wow that is cheap. I tell you the guy made me feel like a member of the family. Reminded me of Tildeath.

CAP's talking about a swapped 4.2L (258) instead of a 4.0L HO (258) Straight 6 and it happens a lot. Awesome it worked out for you. :rock

I think that model Jeep has a remote oil filter as well, given the carnage this easily warranted an oil cooler/system flush even if it didn't come with it.
You did get a great price, most of mine were in the 4-5k range....

Did you get that safety recall notice on your 2000 Jeep. The electric radiator fan that breaks apart.

They should have send it to you. If you have not recieved one, your jeep may not be in that group but still look into it
