Title: Any suggestions for AMD heatsinks?
Post by: Ruler2 on January 15, 2010, 07:39:21 PM
I am looking for a good heatsink for my Phenom II X4 CPU, as of now I am looking at either the Scythe Big Shuriken:http://cgi.ebay.com/Scythe-SCSK-1100-Shuriken-CPU-Cooler-Rev-B_W0QQitemZ380146062631QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item5882789527

The Arctic Cooling Freezer Xtreme Rev 2: http://cgi.ebay.com/AC-Arctic-Cooling-Freezer-XTREME-Rev2-CPU-fan-Core-i7_W0QQitemZ380197907793QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item58858fad51

Which one of these would you recommend? Do you have any other heatsinks you think I would like? I DO have a handicap, my case inhibits me from having a heatsink over 6 inches tall, so I am somewhat limited on my choices.

I don't really have an answer for you, I'm just replying because I've just ordered a mb and cpu that's an amd phenomII x4 3.2 cpu  so I'm interested in seeing what people have to say about cooling it.  I have a pretty big case though, so I'm not as handicapped.  What kind of cooling does the cpu have right now?

I know one of the most recommended for Intel (and works with AM2/+/3) is the OCZ Vendetta 2.  Seems to works wonders from what I hear, but I have no experience (TilDeath has a lot though).  A link: http://tdcomputersystems.com/ocz-heatsinks-fans/120mm-coolers/ocz-vendetta-2-cpu-cooler/prod_72.html   (or since I can't figure out what dimension really is height, labeled differently everywhere) Look at the original one, Vendetta: http://tdcomputersystems.com/ocz-heatsinks-fans/92mm-coolers/ocz-vendetta-cpu-cooler/prod_73.html    Tallest possible for that one is 5.2", cutting it close but it should work if you have 6".

Yeah, I have heard a lot of good about that one, but it's too tall for my case  :furious

Another Taller good one you may want to look at is the Noctua NH-12P

"but it's too tall for my case"

Even the original Vendetta?  It's only about 5.2" according to specs, that's 0.8" of space, not much but if there really is 6" of room (not just 6" from one side of the case to another) then it should fit.  I'm looking into using one of them when I get a Phenom X3 720BE.  My case had to be modded for it, but if I can keep it cool it's worth it. :D

Would be nice to know the exact size of the HS though, from very bottom to very tip and from side-side, not sure actual specs include every little bit of it. (anyone who owns one know?)
Also, just checked, the "Arctic Cooling Freezer" is actually bigger in all then 1 aspect then the Vendetta 1.  It's 3mm (not exactly a big difference) bigger in one way (not sure which, e-bay doesn't say WxDxH)

The original Vendetta may work then, the Vendetta 2 may too but it may be a risk not worth taking

I use this in a PC I just built from spare parts and buying a new power supply. It is used as a media center connected to the TV set ,in a 7 or 8 year old case with three 80mm fans. It cools a AMD dual core 2.8. I don't do any over clocking.  I like after market because I think the stock AMD heatsink and fan suck.

ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 64 Pro 92mm CPU Cooler / with artic silver

It is somewhat on the budget side but gets the job done for me.
Not sure if it will fit your dimensions and you would need to check.

Ruler, how intensive is this system going to be? If it's going to be a gaming system I would ditch the air solution and go to liquid. If not that Artic should be just fine.

My Gladiator MAX barely fits in my case, if it wasn't for the side panel popping out about 1/8 an inch it wouldn't fit at all.

I want to go liquid, but I don't have anywhere NEAR the money for it yet. I thought I may get something that would work better in the meantime.

Cost of liquid cooling has actually lowered. But if it is still out of range then try a multi-fan setup. Warning: It will be loud as hell. You'll swear you're flying a b-17 every time you start up. Get a CPU cooler that fits your case (that Artic should be fine. I used an Artic on a build of mine and was happy with the performance). If you have the slots in the front for a fan, install them. I try to use 120mm in the front as an intake. You want the cool air coming in from the front (I'm assuming you have an ATX case) because the cool air will reach the CPU first. Then install the rear fans as exhaust (outgoing). Also if you have IDE cables in the case, replace them with Cobra Cables. That will improve airflow. Zip-tie or velcro (preferably Velcro) any power cables togethor. Again this is to improve airflow (sense a pattern here?  :D ) I've seen one rig built with 12 fans for a cooling solution, I swear the guy kept a paper weight on the case to keep it from taking off. Either way hope this helps.

Eh...decent airflow...don't like how theres no front fans that are worthwhile...have the rear and side as intake and two top's as exhaust...or the rear-top as exhaust and front-top as intake.

You want cooling power, get something that pushes some air.

One of these "rifle coolers" should do the trick:

The hyper 212 plus has an option to run 2 120 mm fans.

Nice...

Fan Speed: 600 - 2000 R.P.M. (PWM)
Noise Level: 13 - 32 dBA <---- almost silentb]
Air Flow: 21.2 - 76.8 CFM

On Amazon the price is good...looks just like one of the "rifle" coolers...

Still, with similar specs and a "lifetime warranty" and lower cost - XIGMATEK HDT-S963 92mm Rifle CPU Cooler

They're not the cheapest, but you get what you pay for with Zalman coolers.

Amen!  And copper's thermal conductivity is almost twice that of aluminum.   :aok
