First,find a big rock(Flight Models)and turn it over.You won't see any night-crawlers yet but don't worry.Second,take a watering can(FM suggestions)with 1 parts bleach and 10 parts water and slowly pour over all those little holes you see in the earth.Wait a few seconds and VOILA!Dew-worms popping out of their slumber like a bat outta hell wriggling in protest!But don't worry,the bleach/water solution only acts as an irritant to their membrane and they'll be just fine for your day's fishing.(or trolling..)BTW,I learned this trick from hanging laundry over grass..)

My grandpa in Michigan made a "wormer" for nightcrawlers when I was a kid. It really works well, but it's dangerous and I don't recommend it. He used a 50' extension cord, and bared the wires at the end. He soldered each wire to a steel rod with a sharpened end. Then he put each rod in a block of wood for a handle, and wrapped it with electrical tape. You plug the cord into an electrical socket and stick the two rods into the ground in a grass lawn about 5 feet apart. The worms come out of the ground very smartly. Don't step between the rods, though, especially when the grass is damp. You get "poked". I think I prefer your method,SirLoin...

Or you could put a sand-digging-device (i dont know what it is called, a shovel? entrenching tool?)
in the ground a move it back and forth for a minute, gives the same result. Worms don't like the shaking in the ground.
They move out, exodus style!

seagulls kinda do the same thing. You can sometimes see them kicking the ground to get worms out.
It realy looks funny to see all those gulls, dancing around with their feet on the ground and kicking. LOL
