I've been on here for a while now, I'm 50 y/o have NEVER played video games, am thrilled to be here, but it surprises me how difficult it is to get mentoring. It takes a long time to learn this game. Yes it's a blast while you're learning, but shouldn't we take newer players/team-mates under our wings? Especially squady's? Some minor things are Sooooo helpful and we're not always too busy to tell someone how to get ship guns trained on hangers or bldgs. or how to set your view preferences, or to zoom all the way in with brackets. Some times the arenas are crowded, I Know, but we often lose battles because the guy next to us has no idea how to...... He even might think he's doing it right, but can't figure out why he's always "Fresh Meat". Please pass on the simple things and mentor the players near you. JMO, & Thanks. :joystick: P.S. Be nice to little kids too. I've heard a couple really get their feelings hurt & then didn't see them again(I'm a grampa X 7). :salute

If you ever fly Bish, I'd be happy to wing with ya & answer questions. There are also official Trainers for the game.
-
If you want to fly with the 91st, our squad night is Saturday 9PM est on vox 191. We will be happy to help you with the finer points of high altitude level bombing (some of us are even older than you - LOL).
-
I'm normally up weekends...we (71SQD) fly knight. Feel free to tag along any time. Also happy to spend some time with you or let you ride along as an observer. Type ".F snaphook" in the text buffer and it will show you if i'm on.
-
You'll find that the community here is very willing to help anyone who politely asks for assistance. If you see me in the arenas feel free to fire away with any questions, if I'm not in the process of plummeting out of the sky as a fiery inferno (which is often the case) I'd be happy to try and help out.
-
Ditto here... I'd be glad to go help in the Training Arena or the Dueling Arena. There you don't have to worry about outside interference. You can learn the planes and different setting and such.
Look me up anytime!
I'm 50 myself............. plus 1 on the 4th.
-
OOoo...will someone teach me that verticle turn after a HO shot that gets you right on the tail of a P47M and stay with it at 400 mph?
-
EKK 50 year olds!! Attack of the geezers! :D Just kidding, I'd also be willing to help you out. Soulyss, Snaphook and Shuffler are much better than I, but I can give you some small tips. I've been here 4yrs and still learning myself.

I suspect you're being sarcastic, but I'll answer as if you are not - your opponent went nose low and performed a lead turn against you.
One of the best ways to answer the "How the >expletive< did that happen!?!?!" is to film the engagement in the film viewer, and play (the ones you lose especially) a few times, from both his plane and yours, especially in external view. Keep an eye on his speed and alt in the little window while doing so so you get a sense for when he's conserving and blowing E.

Shuffler is so old his moniter is set on bifocal. :lol :bolt:
Ps... I'll help ya anyway I can too WildWzl. :salute
-
Rick if you have questions drop into the TA some afternoon and look me up.
Also there is an incredible amount of information here.
http://trainers.hitechcreations.com
If you want to give back, just come spend an hour a week flying. Answer questions if there is no trainer around.
Besides its a low stress area to just enjoy flying some days.

watch out for that snaphook guy......he likes to use new guys for bait. :bolt: :neener:

Never played video game? I've been hooked since Pong cost a quarter.

I am approaching two years and I am still discovering new techniques. For beginners, there is a page out there that has the key commands and a few dot commands. I can't find the link, but here is a link to the official version:
http://www.hitechcreations.com/frindex.html
Please pass on the simple things and mentor the players near you.
OK. Stuff I remember being revelations:
1. Flying bombers from the outside with the rudder keys. Set autopilot. Go to a gunner position. Go to F3 outside view. Turn left or right with 'A' or 'D' keys. 'S' centers rudder.
2. For level bombing, calibrate to E6B True Air Speed. Open clipboard map. Open E6B. When the airspeed is stable, calibrate to within 2 knots. Can also be used to adjust actual airspeed to your calibration.
3. Fire IL-2 main cannon alone. Fire secondary only so the MGs don't give you impact sprites.
4. Flaps in close quarter ACM. Still haven't mastered it, but some planes have high speed flaps that are useful bringing a plane over the top.
There are guys in the game who have forgotten more than I'll ever know. There have got to be more little tid bits out there. And I am not talking about the 'shoot the guy before he shoots you' advice.
P.S. Be nice to little kids too. I've heard a couple really get their feelings hurt & then didn't see them again(I'm a grampa X 7). :salute
I am all for patience with kids, when the kids are not completely obnoxious.

NO, wasn't being sarcastic. IMO it's a physically impossible move. To pass, stall, do a complete 180 and get 400 behind and stay there while the plane ahead has been hauling arse in a straight line at 400 mph the whole time. Yet there are a few pilots who have mastered the technique.
But your suggestion is definitely a good one.
P.S. Be nice to little kids too.
Since it became illegal to sufficiently discipline little kids and more than likely there's nobody home to monitor their behavior, they should learn to be more civil if they can't take the harrasment.
<wishes he could reach through his monitor and throttle the crap out of some of those little b@$tards>

Filming is a great tool to use learning the dos and don'ts. Also learning the plane your in helps alot. While the 47M is fast it also turns very well "if" you take the time to learn it. Even though it is fast... it can be caught if it is poorly flown.

Well, this took a slightly different direction than I intended. I feel fairly well "Broke-In". I will take some of the advice, the sincere parts, but mainly I was saying, "Where I've felt I've been for a year". Kind of trying to speak up for newbees. I definitely need to continue to learn and observe, but am OK with my personal progress most days. I just remember how long it took B4 I learned some things, and how much your kill rate improves, game satisfactions improves, we talk about AH more with our friends etc., so thanks for all the input. I hope it helps a few readers besides me. :rock

If you don't ask me for help, I have no clue you need it. I'm not a Trainer, but I will go out of way to help ANYONE who asks for it.
-
Usually all you have to do is ask, don't take the first smart arse answer you get from someone that don't care as the basis of all in this game, many will gladly help you and answer any questions you have. First step is to ask.
If you see me in game on the Bish side I will gladly help you out.
Besides, we all hate to see someone drop troops over their own field..... :lol

I think this is what PM's should be used for and only this, asking a question. Look at the roster and if one of these guys that have said they would help here, or pretty much any name you recognize on the roster would be willing to help. PM that person to ask your question or question. First question might be "do you have a minute?" :D Then ask away.
Most people will help, and if your using the PM's your not going to get all those "use ALT F4" answers

Agreed....
It is also better to work on learning basics away from LW of MW arenas as they tend to be fairly populated. To get the most from your time with someone it is better off in the TA or DA. Then go to the main arenas and put what you learned into action to perfect it.
-
Yes, I spent 8 months or so in MW, and felt a little overwhelmed because of my lack of experience gaming. When I felt more comfortable and less "Picked-On" for being hosed so easily, I moved to late war. Just having fun now, but not bashful about asking questions either.

You're welcome. There's enough testosterone on here without me peeing on the wall too. :x Hope I see you in the game. Found out that I get Ocular Migraines triggered by too much time on the PC, so sometimes I have to get off fast. So If I ever dump and run in a fight, nobody take it personal. If you've ever had a migraine, or know someone who has, you understand. :bolt:
-
I have found a good way to pass along info is with training films. I have generated quite a few for my squad. To mention a few: level bombing, radio operation, town/field bombardment with the cruiser and tank training. What I like to do is have the person view the film then work with the person in the game to see if they got it.
So what I am saying is joining a squad that offers training is very helpful.
-
I've trained a lot of newbies with video clips that develop skills from "absolute, clueless beginner" up to "ready for online". I hope they continue to help beginners:

have you tried changing the refresh rate on your monitor? or its brightness?
i'm sure others here could help more in that area, but it's probably somethign you can adjust out though.

In some small part i think new players have to know that most of this community is experienced and is very helpful to new and old players. You just have to keep asking your question(s) on the right communication channels as most during prime-time go ignored, overlooked or get a negative/sarcastic responce from a squeeker or someone just having a bad day.
Start small instead of global when looking for input or answers. Send a congradulatory message to a player you had a good fight with (win or loose), if the other person responds positively, then politely pry for more feedback on your performance in the fight, where/if your opponent thinks you could use some improvement, etc.. Become familiar with the active members of the training corps, look and see if any of them are online and send them a polite message asking for help/input.
On the subject though of the AH Trainers though, when was the last "Basic ACM Clinic" put on? Is there one comming up soon (I always like to make them when I can)?

There are people who just ask and ask and ask but never really try to learn things, the spoon feed me and spoon feed me NOW types. It's their attitude that prevents them from really learning or learning how to learn the game. Tough to really teach or mentor these types.
There are also people who you can teach a thing or three to and it somewhat inspires them to learn more if you show them where to learn it. Its a pleasure to run across this type and I go so far as to give them my email address if they have any questions. Doesn't matter if they're a squaddie or not.
Sort of boils down to 'you can lead a horse to water but can't make it drink' cliche.

999000<-----old guy...your welcome to fly with me ...just don't expect to learn alot.
