Title: Catapult launching for Allied carrier aircraft.
Post by: Simba on January 18, 2010, 10:25:55 PM
Catapult launching from the aircraft carrier would be fun. None for the Axis AH naval aircraft though; the IJNAF, Italian Navy and Kriegsmarine used catapults only for launching seaplanes from cruisers and battleships.

A life on the ocean wave, a home on the rolling sea . . .

What's wrong with taking off on your own power?
Some of US carriers did have it, but I doubt HTC will do it anytime soon looking at the WWI project there working on. But either way something to consider for the future.

Fixed. Scroll three down  -- >  http://theoatmeal.com/comics/misspelling   |  It's a nice read.

As for catapults. I really do not see the need, and I do not even know if they were used back then.

:rofl Actually it would be they're Joe you should go back and read your own link.

As for the OP, I don't see much need for them but they could be fun.

I say +1 as long as the dev time doesn't interfere with more pressing projects.

Before the Iwo Mustangs were sent to Iwo there were tests conducted to make sure the ponies could succeed at launching from the carriers under a catapult launch which they did (two tests both succeeded). In the end the ponies were delivered to the island by crane but the squadrons had been prepared to catapult launch if the carriers became engaged and needed to clear the decks early.

Well if you look on a side of a carrier in the game you'll see little cracks like the hanger one on a carrier. They would catapult TBM's from there and other American plane's.Ever seen the movie Wing and a Prayer it shows that happening in it.

Mis-read what he had posted. Thought he meant their WWI project instead of they're working on....

Catapults were used on US carriers, though believe mostly on the escort carriers.  USS Manila Bay and Natoma Bay both launched P-47s from their decks using catapults for the Battle of Saipan.

You only have to get shot off one once to see the need.

Yes, they were, but no more than necessary.
