Title: Cargo ships
Post by: oakranger on January 19, 2010, 01:39:19 PM
This would be a great addition for events like FSO.

Why? We already have barges.

I'm guessing to search and destroy Cargo ships running supplies out in the ocean.

Because FSO and Scenario designers can not adjust the course of barges.

It would be nice to have Cargo ships or convoy fleets to help recreate certain scenarios. Think of the Battle of the Bismark Sea where the Japanese were trying to get troops to New Guinea but came under allied air attack. Right now to simulate it we basically set up a fleet of DDs and CAs since we can plot their course. Would be nice to able also have merchant ships for this role when creating a design for players.

Targets, targets, and MORE targets.

Lightly defended targets of opportunity.
Consider the sea going barges and troop carriers used in the Pacific as a start.
Carried troops, supply's, perhaps a tank, etc.

Tramp steamers chugging along at 8knots from port to port with a mixed cargo.

In short, more things to kill.

Also it ties into special events as noted, and immersion as well.

Beat me to it. Also in the North Baltic sea as allies send supplies to Russia and Mediterranean sea during the Africa Campaign

Excellent idea, I say 'aye'. Those merchant ships would make great targets for the dive- and torpedo-bombers.

maybe if the merchant ships got close to land it could unload GV's, u know kind of like a floating V-base.

just a thought

Actually interesting concept if you start thinking about it. Many cargo ships were armed. It would be weak armament but unlike our current barges they could also shoot back.

In addition in the Med and in the Atlantic that the British actually places Sea Hurricanes on cargo ships and used a catapult system to launch them to provide some air support until more escort carriers came online.

Now your talking, single cam ship with a group of 4 - 8 liberty ships for the Atlantic.
Or shipping barges, LST's, the sky is the limit here.

Like you say "lightly" armed for the most part. Most of them couldn't slug it out with a submarine.

There is enough reason why, Denholm.  just look at ghostdancer reply.

Perhaps they could be a mobile strat such as troop carriers with ability to direct and hide them from bombers that find the strats quite easily.

something new to shoot at, throw a few man ack positions on em, allow them to resupply ports...  win win

not sure how they can resupply ports but a capital idea.  AH could make ports that are used for the cargo ships only to get supplies.

well I dunno, perhaps make it where caro ship convoys spawn say at random places 3 or 4 sectors out from ports, and head to the ports and dock, if they make it and the base is damaged the convoy successfully getting there will do and equal amount of resupply as an airfield cargo drop..

something to that effect, you get the idea.

I had said the same thing in my first post. Guess I should have explained it better.  :D I like it  :aok
