i went to the RC swap meet in georgetown and picked this thing up for 100$, put a .90 engine in it (it weighs twelve pounds) and some high-torque servos and just got my first ever RC warbird for a little bit under $250, im really excited, but i think its going to be part of my static display for awhile, until i get a bit more experienced.
ive been flying on a low-wing for about 2 weeks now, and LOVE this hobby, and its really exciting, so a big <<<<S>>>> to all the guys who reccommended it for me!

Nice. Just be careful about warbirds they have very diffrent charicteristics to a trainer type. If I were you though I would definetly train more with the trainer first, then moving on into the P40.
IMO you are not ready for it yet, and that is comeing from me. I didn't start warbirds until like my 3rd year flying, becasue it is an advanced airplane and when I did start a warbird, it was a PT-19.

like i said, its going to be part of my static display for awhile, ive been flying with a low wing airplane and added some weight to the front to make it a bit more like a warbird
-
It's not just the weight, it's the entire geometry of the plane and far smaller wing area. It will be rather twitchy and unforgiving particularly since it's likely to be faster too. It's going to be an advanced change for you.
-
LOL .. the guys who flew the real ones did not get long to 'get used to it' .. make sure the CG is right, engine is run in, and have one of the 'old hands' take it up first to trim it out and check flight controls .. then it's all yers.
I found it easier to fly the bigger planes ..not as twitchy as the smaller ones and more visual feedback on approach and such.
Definitely faster flare speeds :) .. FUN!!

hey dude....that p38 from before fell through......but there's a guy in mass. has a 94" p-38 with a pair of magnum 4 strokes on it. it's not a scale one...it's nitro models.....but it's a big bellybutton twin. :D
he might have a p-40 too........
to the OP........sweet lookin plane sir! :aok

my p-51 lands almost as easily as my sport planes.

thank you sir, one guy at the show had a B29 with a 102" wingspan, think it had like 4 .90's on it

another suggestion....when you first fly her......have one of your clubs instructors hook ya up to a buddy box. he can catch a good 90% of any mistakes you may make almost instantly, saving the plane.....and then show ya what ya did to get into trouble. :aok

its got working flaps and everything, should help me out a bit
-
i dont fly at a club, a few guys from the local hobby shop rent a private airstrip on the weekends

here is a pic of me after first solo from a couple weeks ago, (was my first day flying) the sexy beast on the right is myself, and my instructor

careful with the flaps. my pony only needs very very little. i've got the radio set up to provide a slight down trim on the elevator, as the flaps come out, preventing the nose from porpoising. here is a pic of me after first solo from a couple weeks ago, (was my first day flying) the sexy beast on the right is myself, and my instructor

that's the hobbico superstar?
you'd be surprised at what that plane will do with a .46fx....or the .50sx. :D
and congrats on the solo btw.

Nice plane Tupac, you ll get hooked real bad lol Ive got 3 warbirds P51-D, A6M, F4U-D All 66 to 76" wingspans and just got a 96" B25-J , on the B25 I'm making sure the Bombay doors will function so i can drop flour bombs, or Paintball bombs, that trainer you have looks alot like the one i use for warmng up, very stable plane :aok

i fly it when its really windy, i wont fly any of my other planes when there is alot of wind
-
yea they work killer on mid to high wind, not to high thou lol, i live in the central oregon where the wind can come up in seconds, when it starts to blow i land my warbirds but ill still fly my trainer.

if they still sell em.....world models t-34 mentor. it's ugly. it flys beautifully though

the yellowcheckered one is mine. i modified the aielrons, elevator, and rudder. i changed from a single servo on the aielrons, to one on each one...so i could use em like flaperons. it has an os .50sx in it, and is fast as hell.......yet lands at a crawl.
the red one is how they appear stock. beautiful flying airplane...and good first low winger.

That in my terms is not a bigger airplane, and that is the problem. I have a 92'' Hellcat that really does fly like a trainer, and that is big and easy. I also have a 101'' 109 that is not at all that easy to fly, so it could go either way. The airplane is going to be much heavier than what you are used to and the wing loading is going to be much higher with the less of the wing.
I would do like you said and keep it as a static show airplane, and that is all for now. I would also buy a sport type flier and learn with that, then move on to the P40.

I am thinking of building a 90-110 warbird at some point, just because I like to work with my hands because they are cool, cheaper than a race car too.
Havent flown an RC bird one lick though....
