Quick question, since I can't make it out myself...whats the date on the end of those shells? They don't look like WWII M2 cartridges in the neck and vents behind the compression ring. I do see 40' somethin on one of them.
One looks like it says 1984 (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/redface.gif) (the HEI)

Ah much better. Date explains it...early casing model. Once they moved up to the Mk 2, 4 and 8 casing the Lot numbers were put on the projectile somewhere in mid '43 to '44

The top picture is clearly of the postwar ammo with more streamlined projectiles, intended for the M3 and M24 guns.
