Title: Secret to bowling strikes
Post by: AKKuya on January 23, 2010, 05:44:55 PM
The other night on my Men's league, myself and a couple of current and past PBA players had a discussion.  We noticed that a few guys including the PBA'ers were bowling 8 to 9 strikes a game.  They all had one thing in common.  All of their bowling balls were colored bright green and very shiny.

I have three bowling balls that I use.  One is red, another blue and the last one black.  10 years ago those were the normal colors for bowling balls.  Now, they are being manufactured with the color green.

Looks like a new bowling ball for me is required.  I'm going to have to buy me a bright and shiny green bowling ball.  I know there's a conspiracy at work here. :noid

My brother and I always say we are going to buy our dad a flourescent pink ball because it always takes him forever to find his ball on the rack.

Hammer makes The Emerald Vibe its a metallic type green, good for light to medium oil, Cherry Vibe almost same reaction as the emerald , then they have the Vibe Onyx (black) Med to Hvy oil, the drilling is whats key to the best reaction for your type of ball, also coverstock has alot to do with the reaction on different oil volumes and patterns, those are reactive resin, particle resin ( usually diamond or carbide) and Partical pearl, and urethane. Find the ball that fits your style.

I find that while both myself, and my girlfriend are right-handed and feel REALLY awkward when bowling left handed, we do outstandingly better when bowling left-handed.

Technology has made mediocre bowlers competetive due to being able to buy a break out of the box.  For example both myself and my younger brother throw monster hooks with alot of power, but our accuracy stinks. My dad can throw 100 balls and put 90+ in the pocket but of course he doesn't always carry even on a pocket shot. Dad always calls me after bowling (i'm not currently bowling since I just purchased a house and can't spare the money) to give me how many strikes he had and to guess what his series total was. Like last week he threw I think 27 strikes but barely broke 650 becuase he made 1 spare in 3 games.

One time during League , First game 2 spares and 1 open for 237, second game 264 with 1 spare and one open, third game 235 with 2 spares and 2 open for a 736 series  only had 24 strikes total, i use a little bowling manufacture out of Stockton Cali, Called Lane Masters they have two lines the Legends and Lane Masters, there great equipment and hold up for a long time ( oil penetration) because most of there line is 2 peice just the weight block and Different Resin coverstocks , they also make 3 peice ones to which are mid level Bowling balls which are weight block  then filler material then a thin resin coverstock ( 1/2 to 3/4" thick)   guess i like bowling lol

i use 2 hammers. both red. one polished(for dry lanes), and one dull for wet lanes. i'm a lefty, so i don't have to worry much about the oil dragging down the lane, like right handed guys do.

Yea we curse you lefties you have have that natural hook and less people play the left, right handers have to work at strikes by being able to know when to move your feet according to the oil break down.

All our leverage weighted balls are making the game too easy.  Rumor mill has been saying that either USBC will up the weight in the pins or start cracking down on the leverage weighted balls.  Guess they are tired of handing out them rings all the time.

A guy that bowls at the same house as I do was refused his high house series ring after they weighed his ball and found it to be an illegally drilled leverage ball.  My dad didn't bowl his first 300 until he was in his 50s and neither myself or my brother has gotten one. My brother has a 298 to his credit though (7-10 split on 12th ball).

I haven't been bowling in a long time, and am definitely not any good at it. I did break 200 on the last run though. My question is, does anyone else NOT use the thumbhole? I prefer to use my middle/ring fingers and palm the ball. I've got a "trigger" thumb and it was always uncomfortable to me to use 3 fingers until I learned to use 2.

I don't know how you guys get the ball to swing so much...how do you do it without breaking fingers/thumb?

Years ago when I bowled leagues I carried 2 balls (no laughs please). Both were 16 lb, one being black right handed and the other a swirled blue left hander. I am left handed. If I was not doing up to snuff with the left hand ball during warmup I'd switch to the right hand ball, still bowling with the left hand. This was usually enough to spark my game.

I bowled 8 strikes in a row the other day with realism on lol. Highest score I have is like 275 though. Don't play it too often but when I do it's on lol.

The secret?

Don't hold the Wii-mote so tightly and give it a twist at the end     :D

I do not (cannot, actually) bowl  (I can pack one, though)   :devil

It's not the color...but that's a good theory. The green Hammer Vibe is a good ball for crankers rolling on short THS with somewhat dry outsides...Storm, Brunswick and Lane Masters have balls that will perform just as well, and they aren't green.

I'm not much of a Hammer fan but, I have recommended them to other people who want a good economical ball...along with Storms. Right now I use a Rotogrip Rogue Cell, Lane Masters Big R Bang and a Columbia Scout Hi-flare...and I'm sucking wind since I changed to 15lbs balls mid season...shoulder was killing me with 16's...I'll have my poop together by next season.

You guys and your balls  :D

My son has a blast bowling and I take him fairly often, but I just can't do it anymore.

i use the thumb hole. my balls are drilled for fingertip. on my wet lane ball, i have an extra hole drilled for a third finger. it gives me a little extra rotation, helping keep my hook a little more consistant on the wetter lanes.

during the majority of the swing, i'm behind the ball. as i pass through the veritcal just before release, i rotate up the side of the ball, giving it the necessary rotation for the hook.

Be careful you don't tear up your wrist. Palming the ball makes you use extra torque on your wrist which can lead to major problems. In a fingertip ball your thumb is just a balance point anyway, your fingers give all the rotation.
