I was just reading that Avatar is going to pass Titanic with in the next 10 days for worldwide box office of around 1.8 billion, that's just incredible, it passed The Dark Knight this weekend for Domestic box office of around 550 million and it should pass Titanic's 600 million soon.
James Cameron's just a money making machine, the last 2 movies he's done are the #1 and #2 money making movies of all time, I also can't believe that Titanic was the last movie he made back in 1997, that's 12 years in between movies.

Bear in mind however, the whole inflation issue and 3D/iMax. Granted, the money is great, but that doesn't mean terribly much. A lot of the money spent on Avatar is for 3D/iMax movies, which are $15 a piece. Even the normal tickets nowadays are $9. So, while it may have made more money than titanic, titanic sold MANY more tickets.

Yeah but Titanic isn't selling anymore tickets to see it, Avatar's only in week 6 and it's already about to surpass it.
If I recall Titanic was number 1 for 12 weeks before it reached this mark, so even if you still adjusted for a 50% inflation of ticket price it's winning.

Last I checked Star Wars would still pwn it if adjusted for inflation.

is avatar worth seeing?
No. No, it is not.
Avatar is essentially a heinous compilation of every white-guilt/human-guilt movie ever made. I counted blatantly stolen plot points from Fern Gully, The Word For World is Forest, Speaker For The Dead and Dances With Wolves, just for starters. It's also the same old "white man swoops in from nowhere and swiftly proves himself better then the natives at their own life and culture," which has a not-so-subtle white-superiority overtone to it.
I find it important to note here that I'm so conservative club baby seals with another baby seal; and yet I have no qualms with labeling Avatar with such progressive terms.
The plot is so hackneyed and predictable that I was able too call every major plot point well in advance, and in one part near the end, the aliens are penetrating the canopies of gunships with bows and arrows, which had me screaming and rattling the bars of my cage because even modern export-arms gunships have canopies that can repel .50 caliber fire, much less fragging arrows.
Don't watch it. Ever.

is avatar worth seeing?
My wife and me were bored to death by the extremely shallow & predictable storyline and the lousy dialogues. We left the theater before the film was over. (Good thing we don't have to pay when going to the cinema)
However, we were the only ones, and most people there were absolutely thrilled by the shiny pictures.
-
Or, just smoke alot of pot and take it for what it is. Eye Candy.

Yeah that is probably the best way to view such a movie...Demetrious pointed out the obvious underlying b.s....but to be fair, even the Hobbit series had the exact same underlying b.s. and it was written in the 30s...just watching the movie with all the CGI and the action makes it easier to enjoy rather than try to guess what the story is trying to tell you. I quit considering the underlying message years ago...less headaches, less stress, more entertainment.
-
Watch it in 3D only. The beauty of the world rendered is worth the $15. Anthing else as mentioned is predictable/yeahright, but personaly I didn't feel the 3h go by ... nor did my wife ... my kid was borred :lol

That was my biggest mistake. Wasting $15 to see it in 3D. Was NOT worth the extra cash and the movie itself was REALLY lousy. The only thing I enjoyed was watching the helicopters and aircraft. I could have slept through the rest and enjoyed it much more.
-
Incredible movie! The 3D experience was amazing! One of the better movies I have seen in the last 15 years!
Story line was remarkable and the movie flowed very well.
Entertainment value at the 3D price was well worth it. Will probably see it again.
Took my 8 year old. She loved it!
Everyone's view is different so this was IMHO.
-
I'm not into cartoons so no avatar and I'm not into love stories so I never saw Titanic.
Folks that I know that saw avatar were mostly not impressed.
Folks that I know that enjoyed Titanic are mostly women.
-
Loved it as well
-
More people have said to me: "Don't see it". I haven't seen it yet, no plans to either.
-
Avatar is visually stunning, but lordy the story and plot suck.
Still waiting for a film to combine incredible visuals with an original / entertaining story. Right now, it seems the two are mutually exclusive.
-
I saw it in 3D this weekend and was more impressed by the landscape and forest that the plot. Plot was alright, but nothing that I would go and see in the theater again like I did with Star Wars.
-
Oh yes.. the CGI is impressive indeed... absolutely incredible actually.
It's a shame they wasted such great effects on such a poor movie.
If you sit back and enjoy the pretty pictures, you'll enjoy yourself. If you actually try to use your brain to figure out WTF they were thinking when they wrote this script then you'll be lucky to make it to the end.
The movie just kept going on and on and on and I kept... waiting for something to impress me and then the movie was over. Never was I 'immersed' into the story line. Never did I forget that I was sitting in a theater seat.q
Two things that bothered me the most (aside from the arrows through the canopies).... the fact that they trusted a multi-billion dollar Avatar to a handicapped ex-marine with no experience whatsoever...
And the fact that they actually CALLED the stuff UNOBTANIUM... in the previews I figured it was a 'joke' name they used slangly for what it is really called.. never in a million years would I have guessed that a substance would ACTUALLY be called that in any kind of serious film.
Oh.. I could just go on and on.. but I will admit the eye candy is stunning.

The one in Georgetown is about 7.50 a piece, and about 10 for 3D

Flying dragon things, Giant floating rocks, and you're worried about an arrow through glass? :lol
Also they addressed the handicapped marine thing in the movie.

Yeah I guess you really weren't paying any attention because they addressed this in the movie, remember it was for his twin brother who died.

As in the Georgetown on the Potomac river?
Now the 3d is down to 10ish, but at release I think it was 15? I saw it in Chinatown anyway...much more accessible for me. Didn't realize you were a district resident. There seems to be a fairly large contingent of us... :aok

The point of movies(or entertainment for that matter) is to take your psychos to another place....not every movie has to make you think long and hard about the philosophical significance of the common good of man. If you enjoyed any part of the movie whether it's mutually exclusive or not = success. You don't see anyone complaining about a bad plot in Veronica Does Mars. Everything has its purpose. :old:
-
I enjoyed the movie, wasn't the best or worst.
Just enjoyable and pretty, I as a rule don't listen to anyone when it comes to movies or books.
See it or not your call, don't let others decide for you.
-
I thought it was an ok movie......as for the box office highest seller......how does it compare when you take into consideration the cost to make the film....just a question I have asked myself since the beginning of the it is going to be the biggest box office hit ever blah de blah......
oh and tigger...don't under estimate the power of an arrow.

Especially when it's shot by an 8 foot tall blue thing riding a dragon...
-
I took my little sister out to see Avatar. Her and I both enjoyed the movie. It was worth my $15. I normally dont listen to other people's suggestions on seeing a movie. Everybody had differing opinions and you should not let others decide for you.

I was not expecting an intricate storyline but certainly enjoyed the effects. Would not really like to see it on DVD or BlueRay. May go again just because it was so cool to watch.
-
Finally saw the movie today. I wasn't expecting anything in regards to plot, acting or morality play aspect. I went simply for the effects and it was in the enhanced 3D theater. I was underwhelmed by the 3D as I expected far more in your face scenes. The overall effects and background to the actors was actually nice. I was impressed more by that than the very obvious lame plot. I'm glad I paid to see it, once. I won't again.
-
Liked the eye candy plot was so so. Worth what I paid for it. I think it was closer to $20.00 back in OZ over Christmas.

Giant smurfs screwing.

I love this review of the movie, and I must agree completely with everything except the last line. There are two reasons besides a 3D experience to watch this movie. First, the world of Pandora is simply fascinating. Its like looking at a Hayao Miyazaki world in live-action instead of animation. I would go just for that. Second, the quality of the CGI rendering on the characters is incredible. In no time at all you can suspend your dis-belief that these blue humanoid creatures are not real living breathing actors. But again, I agree completely with Demetrious about the story and the message.
-
Don't listen to anyone, go see it and have your own opinion :aok
-
Well it's officially the highest grossing movie of all time.
Needless to say there already getting ready to film a sequel, I heard they've already been getting some of the tech guys to sign contracts for the next 2-3 years.

uh.. lord of the rings trilogy?
-
While I liked the movie, I think the best synopses yet was this one from Slash Dot:
Dances with Smurfs

That was from a South Park episode.

It's crap.
-
I enjoyed the film for a good story revolving around exploring a new world, new species of sentient beings, and the action of confrontation all in 3D. I also enjoyed the subtext of preserving the enviroment from commercialism in mining and exploitation of resources. Plus, the simple warning of any future human exploration of space when dealing with another sentient species who appears to be less advanced.
Smile, give chocoalte, and pray they don't find out human flesh tastes good.
-
ive not seen it an everyone ive heard from says its crap, but looks cool which gets old very fast. i dont plan on seeing it
but seeing as how its raking in the dough, i hope 1 day i figure out some way to make people giv me there money in exchange for a complete piece of crap too :devil ....maybe ill sell dog poop with a picture of boobs stapled to it. dont steal my idea :furious

Thats pretty much what iritated me about it. In REAL life they would have been turning that planet into a tourist resort. That would have made more sense to me.
