Title: Landing Craft
Post by: killert5 on January 29, 2010, 06:18:43 AM
So I was watching the Military channel earlier, and they were talking about LVTs.  FYI LVT stand for Landing Vehicle Tracked incase u didnt know cause I didnt and had always wondered what it stood for.  Anyways, while watching this show I had an idea that I thought would be kinda cool.  With all of the towns that set kinda of close to the shore, wouldnt it be cool to have landing craft like they used on the Beaches of Normandy?  They wont be able to travel on land of course but if lets say 10 landing craft rolled up to the shore after the CV had just went down, thier door drops opens and troops begin to storm out. That would be a hundred troops storming across the field rushing the town.  This may or may not be a dumb idea, it just seemed kinda cool to me and wanted to get your all thoughts about it. May add something new to the game.

LVT's are hard enough to get to shore, never make it to shore with a Higgins Boat

I like the idea, but there's nothing to stop you from doing that now, right? spawn 10 or more LTV's and as soon as they go wheels dry let loose the troops, instead of driving all the way into the town. Won't they automatically run to the town? Let 'em run. Sure, a number of them won't make it, but maybe 10 get through.....

Since there won't be hundreds of troops defending the town I don't think this is a good idea. It seems a bit one sided. What would you do to balance game play?

moot point, I think. Like I said, what is there to stop someone from doing this now with our existing LVT?

How do you defend it? Wirbles on the beach, or a Jeep/M3/anything else with a '50 cal. Mow 'em down on the beach, before they get to town. You might get egged and the troops make it in, but there's no difference there than what we have now.... you can get egged in your WW/tank while defending and that one LVT gets through and POOF the base is theirs. You wanna balance gameplay? Get more defenders to come help.

I believe you need to be within a certain distance of the town in order for the troops to run automatically towards town.  I forget what the distance is...

They will run only if they are close enough, else they will just stand there ... I don't know the distance, in regards to the town, when they will run to the map room.

There are some shoreline "towns" that may be close enough for them to run when an LVT gets feet dry, but there are more, I believe, that aren't close enough to the shore so the LVT has to run on land.

Most people drive the LVT to the maproom to ensure that the troops can get into the maproom without defending planes picking off a couple to deny the capture.

Ah, so you gotta get close in. I've only ever successfully gotten troops into town once, and that was just yesterday, so I'm a newb on the whole troops and troop carrier thing. Normally I'm buzzing around overhead being flakkerbait.

I think it would be cool to change the distance, though, maybe make it quite a bit further out that they could be released and they'd head off in the "right direction." Would be fun to see, a few hundred troops running across open ground... oh the carnage that would ensue!

LOL, no, wasn't me! I don't think I would have the patience to even get to 10K in a goon!

Now if we could only get those troops to HALO jump!

And to give the amphibious assault that real life feel lets load the troops down with 60-80 lbs of equipment so when they get dropped off to soon they drown.  That would be way cool.

LCVP (Higgins boat) was a bit faster in the water than the LVT-2, so it could be useful in a few situations. Maybe you could get a formation of LCVPs (a little further apart than buffs, but otherwise similar) so you could let out 3 times the troops for the enemy to have to kill.

OTOH, I can think of at least a hundred other vehicles that would add more to the game.

You know what I'd really love to see for the ground game? A "pilot" with a bazooka (and a pistol to kill troops) you could spawn from the barracks near the Map room of a port or V-base. Or maybe a jeep "cargo" that allowed the driver to bail with a bazooka. Hidden bazookas would rawk.  :rock

I'd rather see LSTs instead to bring vehicles ashore

Yup bring on the Higgens boat (eventually) and increase the field/port capture threshold to 35

1.5k and they'll run.
