Title: Disc cloning
Post by: BaldEagl on January 29, 2010, 02:41:30 PM
Does anyone know of a good free disc cloning software that would allow me to save the clone to a folder rather than a drive or partition?  I of course only want to clone/copy the data, applications, registry files, etc. and not the unused space on the disc.  I've got ten drives/partitions on three machines I want to clone to two additional drives on my main machine and don't want to partition those drives into ten little pieces.  The key words here are free, good and destination folder.

BE, Clonezilla allows that (,no cost, imaging to a file, copying only the used areas of the disk, rather than free space.)  When you are starting it, choose the "Device to Image" option, rather than the "Device to Device" mode.   Edit -> The only thing I've never really looked at closely is how large the image created is - I'd be shocked if it isn't roughly the size of the used space, because I'm sure I would have noticed otherwise - but it's never been an important factor when I've needed device to image mode.
