I just went and had another go at warbirds after not playing it for years and all I can say is "How did I play that watermelon for hours on end?". It is seriously lacking compared to what we have here, be thankful guys. I must admit it was funny in both DoA and warbirds, who's the cadet in the 110 shooting down the trainers or wow you fly that camel well for someone who just started. It was a funny diversion but we have something much better here.

Because 2.x was (at the time) the Cadillac of sims is why, and it took a while for others to catch up. (Or more specifically, for the original developers to develop another sim comparable).
The current state of WB's is (for me) cause for sadness, rather than gloating. It's my first online game of any sort, and even if I don't want to live in the neighborhood anymore, it was a great place to "grow up".

I have to agree with you on that one. I started in WB and had many hours of enjoyment and learned a lot in there. My first trainers in there were Juice and Hellow. They would start you out with the very basics and work with you as long as you wanted. It does hurt to see where it is going or should I say not going. I had a lot of good friends advisories there.

i flew with an MAC-AW classic friend last night, i know i for one do not want to go through the death of another game, that is just sooo sad.
i spend a fair amount of time in WB and have seen their struggles over the years ...
i think most of us would be very happy to see WB get things going well again ...
so lets all cross our fingers for WB and their efforts at improvement ...
because there is no downside to another good game in the genre.
IMO

flown Wb from 2001 til 2007
worked as trainer, =dhy==, for years there, got a lot of fun
sad to see that they never get the FM into the ruight way
finaly they got a great FM with the latest 109E and spit1, loved both but they never came over with the whole set corrected
when they moved their servers in 2007 into another datacenter, i was forced to give up, because it was simply unplayable for me. too much warps, started to hate that collision bubble
i got wb as a great time on my mind, made a lot of friends, got great events there, tons of fun (nearly non squeekers there)
but nowadays they cant compete with AH2, i got fun flying here now

I'll never forget garn repeatedly shooting down 3 of us as we all attacked at the same time. To me the best time was right after the addition of the RPS. All of a sudden planes that never left the hangar filled the sky. What fun!
-
Always had fun over there and for old times sake might just have to give it one more go just to say that I helped a little.

Dont grt me wrong, I have had plenty of fun with WB in my time. It just hasn't changed in years, I know there have been updates but they don't seem to have really improved things much. I too was hoping the old bird will still fly but sadly she doesn't. I had had a few beers while playing and I was sort of angry with the whole situation when I submitted my OP. Nevertheless It was a real let down.

I felt the same way Phatzo. I tried WBs and OFF within the last year...ended feeling really appreciative of what we have here. I must say though that in its day (1995-97' for me) WBs was a lot of fun.

I started out back in 96 doing WB mostly H2H. By 97 I was starting to hang with the 332nd Flying Mongrels, flying online more. Ended up leaving in 2k when AH went pay for play and never looked back. Even then I could see the handwriting on the wall.
Some good people, and some good times there. And when the squad moved we left some good dogs behind.
I was lucky enough to get in on AH at the ground floor. Being involved with both the Trainers and the CM's as it was all being built was truly a wonderful experience.
I'll never go back. AH till I die, as long as HT and crew are around.

Loved WB back in the 2.7XX days, but I left as soon as WBIII came along- I was horribly disappointed with the 'upgrade' and could see easily where it was going to end up. Am sad to see in the few times I've tried it again that I was right. Also sad to see how bad their community has gotten- their forums are nothing but a 24/7 whinefest and 'mines bigger than yours' arguments. No sense of humor, no help, no perspective.
I miss the old days (GOD how I miss the RPS and WWII Arena!), but I'm never going back.

I played WBs a bit at the outset 97-99 and then started again as Parrot a few years ago, and then came here. I think both games have their virtues.
On the plus side for WBs is the fact that the community is 99% adults and most of those are actually interested in the historical AC and the history. An anecdote might highlight this difference. I could not recall which Soviet cannon was the 'latest' (the "B" or the "Shvak") so I asked on the rook channel which one was a better set up for the LA-7. The reply? "Duh, I wonder which is better 3 cannons or two?" In WBs I probably would have gotten what I was looking for: "well cannon X is better like the 151 and you get more rounds per gun . . .", or, "the three cannon version is less maneuverable." I also prefer the "feel and flow" of the WBs world---but that is probably a preference based on habit rather than true merit.
AH, IMO, has a much better integrated game, i.e., the CVs, bombers, GVs, strats, etc all integrate in a fashion that makes for a better game. The numbers are, of course, much better. One key move by AH is the "Player X lands 3 kills in a X". In WBs it is "Player X kills Player Y" and so the animosity, excuses, and arguments are even more vitriolic. AH delivers on new developments and operates much more professionally.
I find one striking commonality---the human factor. This I find both rewarding and disturbing. I have made friendships in these games and I've met interesting and amusing people from many countries and backgrounds. It is heartening to see that I can cooperate and have fun with people who probably strongly disagree with my views on many matters in real life. On the down side is all of the incivility, rudeness, and bickering. The "old hand" vs "newb" stuff, the insults and ridicule on some threads---these are the flip side. My participation in Parrots was the high point in this virtual world, and the squad's disintegration the low.

Used to fly in Flying Circus too, flew under ack-ch. The other tech guys at CH and I used to log in after work and have squad vs. squad fights with the other joystick company techs like Gravis and Logitech. Too bad Flying Circus ended up folding the game did have a lot of potential, too bad SimGuild just couldn't keep it running.

That is just sad. Did you read the comments? I am willing to bet that all of them were posted by Wild Bill, but the sad part is the last comment which is from him.

Well, "Wizkid" (comment #1) is an actual person, not Wild Bill. He is an OLD ex-Luftwaffe fighter pilot, but from the post war Luftwaffe.

DOA was a blast when it debuted, as was WB during its heyday
