Whoo hoo! For the second time in just little over a month it's SNOWING!!!!!! We haven't seen this much snow in Southern VA in a long time which means hell has frozen over and the B29 will be released next month.
This is great, normally I'd be working as I'm the only full time employee at my job who has 4WD, however, I'm on vacation so I get to stay home and play! WOOT! Time to go make a snow fort.

must be that global warming, eh? :devil
seriously, at least they know how to clear the roads down there. i got caught in a storm that i hit in georgia a few years back. made it to dunn, before i couldn't keep the ole 5th ave on the road anymore.
came out in the am, and almost 2 inches of ice on the entire car. finally got in, warmed up, and then pure hell on rt 95 till i hit va......where, although the storm hit there too, the roads were beautifully cleared.
stay safe. :aok

Do they at least know how to clear it there? Down in Ketchikan we got several feet last Dec/Jan and all they did was build giant snow barricades.
Oh it's 80 and grey here, fixing to go play some golf. :D

We've escaped again, barely any snow where I live despite the whole of Northern Europe, China, the USA getting getting smothered recently. It is cold though and a few miles away they got it worse. I live too close to the Atlantic ocean for that. But yesterday we ran out of central heating oil so we lit the fire in one room and snuggled under blankets. Couldn't get warm for ages. To make it worse, we were watching 'The day after tomorrow' on TV again. We definitely knew how they were feeling. My wife and I argued over whose books we should burn first. My aviation books and her chick lits potboilers. :rofl
Someone told me we were getting better weather than Florida! :aok

"Take that global warming"
Yup. Snow doesn't comes from water vapor and something isn't needed to warm up said water
to put more of it in the air. It's all boo_chit. ;)
You people enjoy the snow for a while. Been pretty nice here in Mass
Just planted my first palm tree and the orange trees are starting to blossom.

Warm air does not snow make. :lol
Did you know that water can evaporate very quickly in cold air?
Do you think global warming caused the last ice age?

soooo....you think there needs to be hi temps for water to evaporate? when the snow melts, just where do you think it goes? perhaps it goes to water heaven?
-
Cap,
Tell him that water even sublimates , that will really blow his mind.....
It was my understanding water mainly absorbed into the land at lower temperatures though.

some does........more than in the warmer weather.....but if you've noticed steam rising off of puddles, or small ice patches in the cold weather? :D

It never gets that cold around here....

Hmmm. You should stick to cars, CAP.
When snow melts.... it is liquid, so it either soaks into the water table or it flows away in creeks and rivers. It ends up in the ocean. It's called the first half of the 'hydrologic cycle'. Snow falls, then melts.
Strip needs to remember that sublimation (of H2O) can't happen without heat, as well as very low humidity overall.
Again, being half-right about something doesn't prove your point. Evaporation rates are dependent upon things other than air temperature, but this does not support your assertion that rates are equal to those generated from higher temps.

A simple chart to illustrate my point, from our friends in the Roads Dept.

Heat would be anything over absolute zero.
-
Heat would be anything over absolute zero.
Absolute zero has absolutely zilch to do with this.
Without the addition of energy (heat) to the process, ice would not sublimate into vapor. That is where sunlight plays a large role in the natural world. Water has a physical property called the "heat of vaporization," which is the amount of heat required to vaporize water. If you want an exact amount of heat, the heat of vaporization of water is 540 calories/gram, or 2,260 kilojoules/kilogram. That is a lot more energy than is needed to convert water to ice (the latent heat of fusion), which is 80 calories/gram. And, it is also about five times the energy needed for heating water from the freezing point to the boiling point. In summary, energy is needed for the sublimation of ice to vapor to occur, and most of the energy is needed in the vaporization phase. A cubic centimeter (1 gram) of water in ice form requires 80 calories to melt, 100 calories to rise to boiling point, and another 540 calories to vaporize, a total of 720 calories. Sublimation requires the same energy input, but bypasses the liquid phase.

So, you'll just stop with interrupting every thread with personal opinion supported with zero fact, and iced with bashing other posters? :aok
I'd recommend it kid.
-
Did you know that water can evaporate very quickly in cold air?
Illustrate your point, please. Not bashing, btw. Just want to see where your ideology is.... Especially due to cold air being unable to carry nearly as much water vapor than warm. (which is why snowfall is very limited under 23 degrees F.)

What's this cold weather stuff? Didn't the rest of you guys wear short this Sunday too?
Anyways, changing the subject, what's the rest of you guys BBQing for the Super Bowl this weekend? :devil

don't you have to make up missed days at the end of the year still?
that's how we used to do it........and for that, i used to hate gettin snow days off.......
-
Growing up we used to get three snow (or cold) days a year, then anything past that would be made up elsewhere. Anyway, in the office today. :frown: 2 degrees colder and it would have stuck to the roads. Apparently we are supposed to get a pretty good dumping on Friday night, which is following the trend of the other storms here this year...

Rain in SoCal this weekend (cue tales of imminent Armageddon from the local weather forecasters) ao I wouldn't hold your breath for those bikinis). Good news is rain here means snow in the mountains. Superbowl Sunday is one of the best ski days of the year.

Woot Woot!!! gear up VA, I just heard we got 30 inches of snow IB

No CAP we don't, we have 13 days built in to be used for bad weather. They don't have to be used and can't be used for anything but bad weather, but we don't have to go to school late until we miss 13.

*Insert quip about Tennessee's education system here* :devil
Really though, that's got to be really difficult for teachers. Tough to chop 13 days out of a curriculum and not lose some vital elements.

i seriously forget how much snow it took for them to close the schools around here back when i was in highschool(the 70's) but i'm pretty sure it was more than an inch.....which is what it seems is all itg takes for them to close em now.

After the expected snowfall was raised incrementally from 10-12, then 16-20, and now 18-24 inches, this pretty much sums up the mentality in DC.

I respect that, but enjoy my snow far, far too much to ever live in such a place. I'm REALLY happy that we are having a record snow year here in DC, and not just for purposes of snow days from work. :aok Call it masochism, I call it growing up in western NY. :D
