When I first started taking it a few years ago, it gave me a solid 8 hours. I take it every once in a while but now that my bottle is expired, it only gives me 4 hours (to the minute) of sleep. I'm hesitant to buy a fresh supply because the 4 hour alarm clock is a nice thing to have.

Is this just a one off? If it is there's no problem.
If it's a regular occurrence there's a few traps to avoid. You may be tempted to have a few tots of alcohol or some pills. It works in the short term but the next thing you know your on a 6 pack or a bottle a night and or a few more pills. You'll find falling asleep harder without this sleep inducing aids. You'll induce an expensive cycle which perpetuates itself.
Set up a routine. Up at so and so and bed at so and so. Be active in the day. The body takes about a week to fall into the patten. Don't drink coffee or caffeine based drinks after 5pm. If you play AH or do other mind active tasks STOP doing it 1 hour before bed. You need to relax. Listen to mellow music or read a book. If your into it ... meditate.
If its stress induced then I'm afraid its a hard battle. Unemployment, money issues, problems in the home can only be tackled over time. Keep up an active daily routine to make your body tired at night.

For me the problem is not falling asleep, its waking up at O dark 30 wide awake.
5:30 am here, wifes not up for another hour, so here I am surfing the boards.
I would agree with Lynx though, watch out for the traps.
Part of it is learning to slow then shut the mind down. Mediation, self hypnosis, can hep some.
Having enough exercise to feel truly tired at the end of the day can help.

I usually sleep around 3-4 hours a night. Ya get used to it. Helps me get more things done. Zzzzzz......sorry...what were we talking about? :headscratch:

Remove any work related items out of the bedroom such as a workdesk or computer. You should avoid watching TV in the bedroom as well. The bedroom should be used for only two things so that your mind knows what mode to go into when you're in it.
P.S.. Also, when you get up to use the restroom don't turn on any bright lights because your mind will think it's time to activate.

When I can't get sleep I lay down on the coach and watch soft-core pr0n on sat-tv. At first it's entertaining to watch the titties etc. but soon it gets very repetitive and boring and before you know it you're fast asleep. If you happen to wake up, waking up to a view of a naked young lady is a good relaxant to doze off again. :D
I hate channels like History etc. that have good sleep inducing programs that are broken by irritating and loud advertisement jingles. Just when you fall asleep that horrible jingle breaks out at +6db.

Not always the case, though.......
My Grandfather goes to bed after the 11:00 news (about 11:30 PM) and he drinks about 8 oz. of brandy every night at 10:45, and has done so (at the same time and amount) for the ~40 years that I can remember, and he is almost 89.
Granted, he DOES have problems falling to sleep without it, but the frequency and amount have not changed for years and years.

But that sounds like "his" routine now. So if he doesn't have the brandy it breaks his routine and he can't easily fall asleep. A routine can be as simple as counting sheep so to speak, no alcohol or drugs needed.

This is a disciplined routine. The trap I referred to was 8oz turning into 16 then 32 then a bottle a night. Good on ya dear ol granddad sticking to his discipline. :salute

I knew what you meant :aok
Just a tip. If you see a German plane flying Knight, and it's straight and level at or around 2245 EST, chances are it's me and I'm AFK pouring aforementioned brandy.
Have mercy on me :D

Yer I know where your coming from. I'm a night person. I can feel tired around 4pm but come 8pm..PaZing ..wide awake. I did years of just 4 hours sleep. Years of drinking heavily. Although I hardly drink now my body knows when it's Friday night and wants the booze. Every Friday night without fail :x Sometimes I give in to the urge but mostly I don't.
Try to eliminate conflict or anxiety especially in an even. This might include AH if folk in game are pissing you off. You'll need to set a regime of tranquility an hour or so before bed.
I have no quick solutions I'm afraid.

Really, the best solution.
Unless one is dog tired, it's really hard to "go right to sleep" after being involved in activity of some kind (for most folks, anyway)

I have had a hard time fallin asleep for years.
I started taking 2 Tylenol simply sleep tablets, and they worked a little too well for me.
Soooooo anyways, I'm now taking 1/2 of one tablet before bed at night, works like a charm.
At this point I think its more of a placebo effect than anything.
But it works.
-
I mostly suffer from small child induced insomnia. Got a dose last night, couldn't get back to sleep then thinking about 'things'. My current lack of income, future prospects and how I'm going to put the little brats through college on a state pension because I'll be A. That old by the time they leave school and B. That will be my only income.
There's only one cure for that kind of insomnia and that's to get rich fast. :headscratch:
-
Try to become a possitive tomorrow person not a reflective today person. Thinking about possitive things you will be doing in the near future will provide you a motive to get to sleep. Pondering over what happened yesterday or today is a sure way to stay awake. Simple mind games you can play on yourself without realising it.

Umm yea i made the same mistake , took 2 of them sat on the couch to watch TV and all i remember was waking up in bed, how i got there is still a mystery to this day :headscratch:

I"ve had trouble sleeping off and on in recent years, mine was usually tied up in some sort of work related worry or anxiety. For some reason my mind has a knack for suddenly remembering something I forgot to do the previous day at 3:00am.
What helped me was I go about some sort of relaxing, daily routine in my head but I would force myself to think about every little detail that happened along the way, the more minute the better. That kept my mind occupied and would usually help me go back to sleep.
-
I'm having troubles sleeping too. I've been studying for the CPA exam and it won't leave me alone.
Try drinking water a few hours before bedtime if you have much caffeine intake. I'm not a doctor but that does seem to help.

Wow, I hate to chime in but had to add my 2 cents....
Some people are saying stuff about coffee.. Just to add a little bit...
I can take caffeine 4-10 hours for you to completely metabolize..
Depends on your metabolism.. Cutting back on coffee early in the day,
like before 11am. is probably a good idea.. It'll suck.. You'll have caffeine
headaches.. After a few days, your body will become accustomed to less caffeine
and eventually more sleep....
Now, if that doesn't work, taking a drink doesn't help either.. Alcohol will actually
wake you up end at the tail end of your "buzz".. And you'll likely have a headache also..
Ever try falling back asleep on a hangover? Don't know about you, but it's never worked for me..
The biggest problem in sleep problems is coffee and/or stimulant intake during the day.. This is the
#1 reason.. You may not even feel the effects, but they linger on.. Melatonin works to a degree..
After an extended period of time, it becomes ineffective and taking more doesn't help..
After all else has failed, and before you go to your doc so he can prescribe you Ambien(which you
want to avoid at all costs as it is addictive even when taken regularly and the withdrawals are worse than withdrawing from morphine),
you will want to try this stuff....... ------------->>http://www.gnc.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2133459&CAWELAID=293850610 (http://www.gnc.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2133459&CAWELAID=293850610)
It's called GABA.. It will knock you the $%#& out.... My buddy's hippie wife recommended the stuff
and I never believed her until she actually got me a bottle for Christmas.. Tried the stuff the first night.. Took it at 10.. Went to bed at 11..
And don't remember much else after that.. I didn't feel drugged in the morning.. I felt normal and unhappy to wake up like everyone else, but
I got some good sleep and I could tell the difference throughout the entire day..
