Title: Late night Candy Mountain silliness
Post by: Guppy35 on February 03, 2010, 01:08:16 AM
Got a chance to fly a bit for the first time in a while.  True to form I logged on just as Raptor was launching his latest epic mission to hit strat with IL2s and I16s.  Typical Raptor Candy Mountain Silliness.

Off we go with 4-5 IL2s and maybe a dozen I-16s.  The formation looks halfway decent.

We know it's a oneway trip, but since no one is dying, and it's for fun, who cares?  Clearly a few folks as we lose some when they figure out that this isn't a serious mission at all.  But we stagger on towards our doom
(http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s199/guppy35/Formation2.jpg)

Once we approach the target, the question becomes now what?  We're hoping for uppers so we can tangle with em in our I-16s.  Just as we see the dar start to build, we began to take flak from a train of all things.  What the heck.  I can't hit anything with a rocket, so in I go.  Damn if I don't actually hit the flak gun and a couple of cars.  How silly is that?

Raptor, as is his usual mission routine, loses most of a wing but keeps on flying.

Bandits are soon called behind and above us, so we turn towards them to engage.  A N1K and an F4U pass over the top of me as I wander under them at about 300 feet.  A 190 sees me and as he passes over the top, he starts to roll in.  I pull up and into him as it's about all I  can do.  I'm slowing and about 85 mph.  He's diving at about 390 when his wings light up and the bastage tries to HO me!

I don't shoot back and managed to get past him with only one hit on me.  I nose down for some E as he goes back up and over.  I pull back into him, hoping that because I didn't HO him, he'll possibly not HO this pass and maybe come down and use those long wings to turn with me in my stubby little I-16.  No such luck as he opens fire again!

Off comes the wing, and I'm back to the tower for a new plane, after about a half hour of laughter good fun.  Another epic Candy Mountain flight into cartoon futility  :D

What ya gonna do.  Some of these guys will only fly latewar rides and are afraid to fight in them.  They only fly with the advantage and even then can only HO! Then they make excuses for it!  :huh  :headscratch: :neener:

Oh ya,
I sometimes up  a jugg, D40 or d11 and just fly around lookin for trains. good practice and lots of fun,
kinda historical i guess. B and D ponys + trains are fun too.

dont know if it helps the score or not but it sure is fun

You shouldn't go nose up at any plane and expect him to hold guns, especially a Ta152.  :lol  Try timing it better and going off to the side next time, you know, that ACM thing you mentioned.   :aok

So you are saying I should expect a HO shot, even on the second pass when the pilot I ran into knows I didn't shoot on the first pass?  I usually figure that the ACM guys, once they see the other guy hasn't HO'd them, will take that as a sign the guy who didn't HO is looking for a bit more of a fight?

I figure with the disparity in performance between my I-16 and the other guys Ta152, he could have controlled the fight without HOing me anyway.  Turning into him seemed to me to be the best move to try and get him slowed down a bit and potentially into a turning fight.  Since I know I'm not really dying I tend to risk the nose on pass and don't shoot hoping to run into those guys who like to turn fight ;)

Oh well, lesson learned.  Guess I better lower my expectations :)

Corky, I popped in over the holidays and played a bit and was very suprised at the amount of HOing goin on now!! :( It seemed as though the "good" sticks had AMPED up the HO participation as well! Must be a sign of the times

So you are saying I should expect a HO shot, even on the second pass when the pilot I ran into knows I didn't shoot on the first pass?

You should always expect a HO.  If he shot at you Head on the first time wouldn't it be even more likely for it to happen the second time?

I usually figure that the ACM guys, once they see the other guy hasn't HO'd them, will take that as a sign the guy who didn't HO is looking for a bit more of a fight?

I usually avoid HOs like the plague, especially against other planes that have respectable gun loadouts.  But when I have you lined up and you are still completing your head on maneuver directly up at me, inverted nonetheless, I'm going to shoot you.  Not to mention the fact I was more concerned with getting to the strats for what I thought was an NOE bomber mission.

A HO is dweeby because you are subjecting your own aircraft to risk when some simple maneuvers would provide a better gun solution and no risk.  I don't have any problem HOing an inverted I16 in a Ta152 though, the risk is low.  Just as I have no problem HOing a Stuka or a C47.

I figure with the disparity in performance between my I-16 and the other guys Ta152, he could have controlled the fight without HOing me anyway.

 :rofl

Turning into him seemed to me to be the best move to try and get him slowed down a bit and potentially into a turning fight.

That was actually the worst move to try.  Nosing up at a Ta152 from 1k out and hanging on your prop praying I don't fire is not smart.

LOL Grizz.  Spit the hook back out will ya.  I really don't care that you HO'd me :)

As I said on 200 I was gonna never let you live it down.  Now you are justifying the HO shot :)

Relax.  It was too good an opportunity for me to pass up by not giving you a hard time.  I really didn't think you'd bite this hard though :neener:

knows I didn't shoot on the first pass?

In your first snapshot of your engagement with the 152, I see a flash on your left wing where your gun is located.  I would interpret that as a shot.

Anyhoo, I respect your overall philosophy of "it's all about the fight" and subscribe to the same.  However, I think in some cases it is taken a bit too far.  The assertion that the 152 should have gotten low and slow with you in a turn fight with him being in a horde busting plane (he probably had no idea that you guys were in I-16's when he rolled and just saw a blob of red) and you being in an I-16 is ridiculous.  There is a good chance he didn't even realize the rest of the cons were I-16's and was looking for a quick dispatch so he could get to the bulk of the horde (this is the most effective way to fight off hordes - kill each plane quickly and move on to the next).  Don't take the situation out of context.  I know that particular 152 driver quite well and to imply that he flys around and HO's ppl and picks is pretty silly.  The context was that there was a blob of red that he upped to fight (honorable in itself considering most would have just gone off to the other side of the map and chosen a fight with better odds or jumped in a FLAK or field gun if one was available).  I condone his horde busting tactics even though, in this case, the horde happened to be a candy mountain mission - something he was not able to know on first contact.

Don't misconstrue what I am saying and think that I am saying that Corky et al flys around in a horde or that you were a horde in that case.  It sounds like a fun mission.  All I am saying is that those who upped to thin you probably had no idea what you were and were using sound tard busting tactics (again not saying you guys were being tards - I'm just saying that is what he probably thought he was up against).

Thanks for your time.  Cheerio.

LOL.  Oops, I read this after I posted.  A.D.D. gets the best of me again.  Congrats on the double hook-up. :D

I'd like to apologize for stirring up this controversy.  It was such a good giggle when it happened, it seemed a worthwhile endeavor to run with it a bit.  When Sunsfan replied, he clearly understood what I was doing.  Note that I never actually named the HO'ing pilot in question.  I just wanted to tweak him a bit.  Clearly that worked :)

It's just a game, with unlimited cartoon airplanes and pilots.  I just can't take it too seriously.  I don't care that I 'died' since I immediately got a new plane and as I told Grizz last night when he and Tec were still trying to explain it, we in the I16s were just about deadstick anyway so it was a one way trip either way. :aok

Guys gotta lighten up a bit:)

The only thing I am actually serious about is the fact that you should not go nose up at an aircraft and expect him to hold guns.  I know the planes are free and all that shabang, but tbh, I enjoy when the majority of my flight time is spent in action, not flying to action.

Just trying to help you out because it seems to me you do not understand how to avoid and reverse an aircraft with advantage from what I have seen.  There's some bait of my own, lets see what kind of fish I can snag with that one.

Although I do respect Churchill, like others I have respect for, I do not agree with everything they do.  Churchill has a long past of mistakes, many of which continue to haunt the entire world 'til this very day.

Gallipoli (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082432/)
A great WWI movie, starring Mel Gibson in 1981.

In conclusion, when on a journey through Candy Mountain, beware of the HO'n Grizz'ly bear! :bolt:
