Title: reformatting
Post by: dkff49 on February 05, 2010, 07:21:33 AM
I finally have everything backed up onto my laptop and I am now ready to have my computer reformatted. The shop that did the virus removal has informed me that since they were not able to fix the problem, they would do the reformat for free. After speaking with them about what I will need, I realize that I never made the recovery disks. I found the instructions on my computer to lead me through this process, but I am now wondering why the suggest not using rewritable disks. Is it to make sure you don't delete them or is there another reason?

I guess the more important question is, will effect things if I use rewriteable disks since it is all I have at the moment?

Most likely.

Yeah never mind i just found out that the computer will only allow you to make one copy.

I did find a dvd-r lying around here and used it which is when I found out 2 things.

1) (as above) you can only make 1 copy ever off the machine

2) My wife hid the recovery disk that came with the machine in with the cd sleeves and not with the other disks. Oh well I guess I now have 2 disks after all.

Question, if you make a recovery CD now, wont you be transfering the virus also?

That I don't know. My line of reasoning was that the recovery disk is only for the OS and viruses were seperate programs all together.

It really doesn't matter much anyway since I found the original recovery disk that came with the computer and that is the one I am taking to the shop with me.

CDrws
Have a tendancy to corrupt the data after a while. they want you to keep the backups longer

Each of my machines at home do weekly backups to other machines in the house.

copy the recovery disk in cast the other 2 go bad:o) if you had anything saved from that machine I would do a virus check before migrating it back
