Title: Thanks AT&T... Dumb bast****
Post by: Widewing on February 05, 2010, 04:37:10 PM
Thank you AT&T. For nothing. AT&T announced via email 3 days ago that users of Worldnet Service would have to find another web host service by March 15th as they were discontinuing web hosting. That same day they deleted my web pages. Over 100,000 words of text, 450 photos.

Their response to my indignation was, "Sorry, it was a mistake. Unfortunately, we can't recover them."

If AT&T was the only phone company on earth, I'd rather use two soup cans and string to communicate than ever give them another nickel.

I have backed up all of the web pages... Nonetheless, AT&T has once again shown their incompetence.

Quite honestly, I really don't have any desire to spend the hundreds of hours required to build a new site.

My regards,

Widewing

I really resent having to talk to some guy named Saurav in Bangalore, India in an attempt to get an answer as to why AT&T screwed up. I have a Beagle sitting here that has a better understanding of spoken English. I had to ask for someone who didn't need a phrase book to have a conversation.

If I find a telecommunications or cable company that I like, I'll be sure to let ya know.

AT&T Is horrible for telephone or internet service though, overpriced too.  My parent's actualy dropped them for their house line and via Time Warner (another company that has its weak points) finaly converted from standard cable TV to digital TV and picked up their landline-through-cable.  They arleady had high-speed internet and standard cable TV, but with all the services they can provide through just your cable line (phone, internet and TV) and their package deals, my parents are now saving over $30 more if they had kept AT7T and things the way they were with TW.

About a month or so after I convinced my parents into that (I've had a TW phone/internet/TV package since I moved out on my own), they convinced my grandparents to drop their AT&T for a DSL and landline phone package from I think Verison, they're now saving $20 a month and finally moved up in the WWW from the AOL 56k era.

I know with Verison and our office (they're our phone and ISP), we have a "buisness" account with them (so you probabley pay a little higher rate), and they handle support calls with a higher level of customer service than if I were calling from home.  When I call them in regards to the office, I always get through quickly to a very american sounding young (but knowlegable) person.  Typicaly I talk to them for 5-10 minutes, wait 5-10 minutes more as they go bug someone in their network/server department, and then that's it, they reset whatever connection/switch on their end.  About 3-4 months ago our email completely stopepd working here at the office.  They ended up merging our old mailserver with a new one, but a port we were using for the old server hadn't been opened up yet on the new one.  Took about 10 minutes from making first contact until they had some server jockey fix the problem....  honestly, if 20-40 extra bucks a month on "buisness" rates gets you that level of imporved customer service, all residential customers should just pitch in an extra $10 for the better service, but instead we get stuck with a level of customer service that barely speaks our own language.

GAK!

You had me scared until you said you had backups.

I'm sure there are a million options, but I've really liked http://www.webhost4life.com/ (http://www.webhost4life.com/).

And no, I don't work for them.  :)

Just wondering, if you have everything backed up why will it take you hundreds of hours to build a new site?

Capitalism at work.  Ain't it spectacular?

I am sorry for your experience.... that is complete BS.  I'm glad to hear you had things backed up though.

207 individual pages made up my 5 different websites... Approximately 450 photos to be uploaded and cataloged, and the address of each photo changed in the code for each page. It's a great deal of work, and I simply don't have the spare time to devote to it now.

I just checked out these guys.... They offer much, much more than AT&T did for less expense.

Now all I have to do is find the time to get it done.

:salute Sympathy is gratefully received... :)

I'll just reorganize and start over. There's an upside. I can do some needed rewrite and use much higher density scans than before. Fourteen years ago, when I first began building the site, server space was limited. So, I used low density scans and never replaced them as more server space was allocated later.

Finding the time is another issue. I have other projects underway that really suck up expendable time.

Holy crap. Unbelievable..

FWIW I've enjoyed your website, as countless others have, for many years.
It was fantastic work and an absolute pleasure to browse around and read
so many great articles.

For now it's still available for reference but as it last was in 2008 and a few
years prior:

In hopes I can save you a few more bucks, you might also consider www.hostmonster.com

We use them for two of our websites (combined domain). Great customer service and features. They generally have someone manning the support lines (online, haven't used the phone version) 24/7. I've never had to wait more than four minutes for an accurate response to my questions (dealing with PHP, .htaccess, Apache configurations, error pages, and uploading).

Sorry to hear your works were dismembered. Just glad to hear you were wise and backed up your work.

+1,000
Best webhost I've used in 10 years (out of the 5 I've used).  For the little price you pay you really do get some excellent customer service with them.

do you have the site structures mirrored on disk? should be pretty simple to FTP them to a new location. Since you say you need to change the address for each image in the code I assume you've used absolute URLs rather than relative URLs, thats just a couple of minutes work to search and replace the URLs (I use BBEdit on a Mac but theres a few batch s&r utilities out there for XP.)

edit: havent tried it but this looks pretty good: http://www.divlocsoft.com/ (http://www.divlocsoft.com/), also has regex (I can help with the patterns if you're new to regex)

AT&T has always managed to kill their customer base at times when they should be trying to build business...problem is the company is run like a government organization...top heavy and stupid.

Unfortunately I have to keep my cell phone account with them because they have the best coverage and calling plan for my needs...just like my ridiculous ISP...got me by the short hairs.

and the address of each photo changed in the code for each page.
Here's a tip for future use, which you may have learned over time; When using pictures on a web page if you keep the Resource Locator as simple as possible as restricted to folder/file then as long as your folder structure remains the same the images won't have to be re-referenced within the page.
eg.
Use <img src="myfolder/mypicture.png">
Not

T'is a same abut your site. I enjoyed reading your blog.

A trick I used in the bad old days when I ran an adult web site was to copy and paste the code I needed to change into my word processing program, use find and replace to change the addresses, then copy and paste the updated code back into the htm file. Saved me hours of work. Course now with PHP changing one line of code can update an entire websites url's.

Ohh golly goodness you cannot have the service without buying the preli... I mean premium service.

I mean they make good food, but they cannot run a call center.

You cannot get a phone service in your own country these days unless you live in India.
