Title: Interesting computer animated dogfighting vid
Post by: Treize69 on February 08, 2010, 07:01:37 AM
Lame music, but the animation and action isn't bad. Zeros vs Dauntlesses, Wildcats and Devastators. Not as good as those little snippet vids from a while back of the Tony, N1K, and of the Ki-84 vs. the P-51, but still not bad.

Now why is it that the japs "get" how to do CGI and our movie companies dont?

Most of what I saw in that vid looks 100 times better then anything I've seen out of hollywood.
Exceptions being some of the views of the ships and the flames comming off the planes.
But as far as everything else. they "get" it.
Hollywoods stuff looks too crisp and clean, too perfect.too enhanced

Yep the music sucked but otherwise that was a pretty good animation of planes from that time period.

You simply need to look up the Final Fantasy movies made in the late 90's and see they beat the snot out of AVATAR and other cgi-movies. Its almost lifelike and without the computer 'perfection' of angles and detail.. they manually add human error after the computer finishes the art so it does not look so artificial.

You're right Drediock, they seem to 'get' how to do CGI. It's also quite clear they studied newsreels of the period. There is one shot of SBD Dauntless which looks very familar. It's a highly satisfying video even with limitations of their graphics. Now if someone could merge the artistry of the Japanese with the quality of Hollywood. What a movie that would be.

Interesting vid.

Regarding Hollywood: At the risk of being tarred and feathered; I would suggest that the BoB CGI scenes in (can barely bring myself to say it) Pearl harbor are excellent.

Anyone know what series these CGI videos are from?  The terrible Engrish has one listed as "Ace of Zero" but can't find anything on it.

I can think of one scene in pearl Harbor that was really well done.
just before the attack the planes coming through the mountains. Prior and after that.
It was too perfect. Too clean. And i think "too clean" is the right description for alot of the CGI stuff. Its so perfect it looks unnatural.

It's not surprising that the Japanese know how to manipulate CGI. After all, when it comes to creating and utilizing electronic technology, Japan always seems to be on top.

The planes and clouds and such are pretty convincing, The humans, not so much.

This is called the "uncanny valley". Its a dangerous point where CGI and real life experience have a very close resemblance but is just sooo close that it causes a repelling feeling. It just needs "the" CGI addition that makes it go seamless with reality.

I just watched that 1st part, and I find the ending VERY realistic. Not in CGI effects (although quite impressive) but with reenactment and "feel" of the battle and what is going on. The guys that did the plane animation paths have without any doubt done some dogfight themselves (for real or in simulators) and grasped the feeling it is to get shot down or have a friend help you out. I compare it to the American "dogfight" TV show and it is NOTHING like it.

I'll watch the rest  :aok

I wonder how the 'BoB' and 'Pearl harbor' would appear in the Youtube.

But

Maybe those yanks are simple more keen for the grease and over done CGI's. Go figure.

See, the holliwood moguls surely know's how to please the mass of the fly's.

Maybe I'm wrong again

I remember seeing artwork type pictures for game box covers that looked alot like AH does now and saying" wouldnt it be cool if the game really looked like that?"

that was back in the days when the terrain had like 3 colors. green, blue and blue and the mountains looked like giant pyramids. lol

Wine connoisseurs and cigar aficionado's have been known to call me a Luddite at times as well, alas....its my cross to bear.

This was from a DVD series by a company called  Futabasha (http://www.futabasha.co.jp/booksdb/book/listview/50101.html). This is just one of the 42 scenarios included in this DVD about the Zero-sen and its pilots. It was released in 2008. As you can see from the link, they are prolific publishers.

It's a shame the Japs are so historically inaccurate.  Watching that video you count up almost half of the Allied total aircraft loses for a 5 day battle.

WHEN YOU WISH UPON A STAR................

Great Fiction though.
