...seems to me that if you totaly remove the verticle stabilizer and the moveable elevator surfaces the sucker should go down....NOT. I did this to a 17 last evening and after getting shredded by the 17's uber .50's I looked out from the tower and to my amazement the 17 kept flying and even gaining a little alt <he was under 200ft when I did what I thought was sufficient damage>. Looked at the film and his Vert Stab was completly gone but he flew out of sight. I just stood in the tower shaking my head not knowing what to think...I wont yell "cheater" but I for damn sure am going to send the film in 'cause it just aint right IMO.

It flies as long as pilot keeps its yaw balanced.
If he banks too much, he will spin, if he doesnt correct it.
in AH, I've flown and landed many times without vertical stabilizer.
It's just difficult to change direction, since every banking movement makes plane yaw too much and eventually spin.

I use the engine to control the yaw after losign the virticle stabilizer. Its very easy actully, just select a outboard eng and when you turn either lower its power or increase its power to compensate. I.E. If turning left, and tail starts to slide out, just decrease power to #4. This will bring you back to center and then bring your power back up. And be sure not to bank as far next time. I don't know how realistic it is, but it is very easy to stay in somewhat of a "Controled" Flight by useing the engines individualy.

In 1.4 or so I flew a c-47 about 20 miles NOE with nothing in the vert. Then landed it on a hot field right by the map room with no gear and cap'd field. Even Sunchaser (goon god) was impressed with my c-47 skills. :)
Dont know if the FM on something like that has changed by now though.

I forgot to say that I've just mostly done that in fighters.
Once in P-47, I had already smoked for while and were chasing B-17, he shot my vertical stabilizer and I broke off, then coming again and shooting him down ;)
(That p47 flew back then forever with radiator broke...)

Interesting responses from all. I guess this isn't something to realy be concerned about <shrug>. I'll just have to put a few extra cannon shells into any bird that I knock off the Vert Stab on...no big deal I guess ;)
