Does anyone actually fly for CAP?

I know a lot of people that are in it, but they don't seem to have a very active pilot program. Seems like they use retired airline type guys with very little turnover.

i fly, but i don't fly CAP aircraft, except with a CFI. i've never gone for my form5.
i am aircrew. i'm a rated mission scanner, and in training as mission observer.

i am also NJ Wing LGT.

they do in some states. all wings of CAP have "o-flight" programs.

in these, cadets get 5(or 6, i'm not sure the exact number) of orientation flights per year. on these flights, they get to actually fly the aircraft from the right seat, under the keen eye of a CAP CFI.
i believe there are programs for cadets to earn complete training in CAP aircraft.

then there are the missions. we do pretty many of the downed aircraft searches, although these are getting less and less, with the advent of the 406mhz ELT's.
due to this, we find other missions. in nj, we do some work for the coast guard, and i think homeland security. we're working on getting the searches for lost hikers(with those personal gps's) as we're better equipped to handle them, than anyone in the state.

in deleware, i think CAP flys for the deleware.

in nj, we have 2 encampments. one if falcon flight, the other is eagle flight. they're both aimed at our cadets. senior members work their tulips off for these.

falcon flight, is a week of intensive flight training for the cadets, hopefully ending with many of them getting a solo flight. the last few years, falcon flight has been held on lakehurst naval air station.

eagle flight is the same thing, except with gliders. the last few years, eagle flight has been held on woodbine airport, in south jersey.

here's a link to CAP's main page. this thing is FULL of information. you can even view our regulations i think. anyone that is interested in learning more, or seeing a squadron close up, can find a squadron near them from there too.

Yea I have researched them a lot before and been out to some of their events.

When you read all of the information they publish you would think they are a program that is all about getting current pilots more flight time, and getting civil pilots to donate their time for the community. I'm a commercial pilot and would be more than willing to donate my time (for completely free) and fly whatever they need me to fly. Its worth it for me because I get valuable flight time that I need to get my next job. In reality their pilots are all multi thousand hour pilots that are already retired or otherwise don't really need any time. Of course I understand its all about supply and demand. Oh well...

sometimes it may appear that way. we had a squadron here in nj that seemed to think that way. they used it as a way to get cheap aircraft rental(65/hour for a VERY nice 172, 95 i think for a 182), yet they'd not fly missions(which was stupid, as it was free flight time) nor would they participate in any other CAP activities.
our last Winc Commander set them straight.

there is another advantage also. our last Wing Commander, who is also a CFI, flew with me many many times in 19NJ. i think he spent close to 20 hours flying with me in that aircraft. it cost me only the rental. he charged me nothing(CAP CFI's cannot charge for their time in CAP aircraft).

BUT....what i found out.....i liked his teaching style more than the CFI i had flown with in the past. i pretty much only fly with him now, when i fly with a CFI.
i'm going to try to afford to get my instrument this year, and it'll be bob i fly with.

unfortunately, that wasn't me.

i've always been unable to get off from work when we arranged the flights on the tankers for the wing....

CP101, what do you fly? What are your normal missions? How often do you get to log time. And my big question, what previous flight experience did you have before CAP?

cadets dont fly, they observe, but cant fly.

only CFRs can fly CAP planes, and i believe they have to be senior members

incorrect sir.

i am a lisenced private pilot. the only requirement for me to be able to rent a CAP aircraft(besides being a member) is that i take a "form5"

the form5 is actually very simple. it is the exact same practical test that i took to earn my ppl to begin with. only difference(again) is that there is a little CAP specific paperwork that needs to be filled out with each flight.....and normally a phone call to a flight release officer.

 and an FYI.......CFR's don't fly.  :D

Well, as I see I have been brought into this already... lol.

I am a C/2lt and Squadron Commander in CAP. I am a licensed pilot with my form 5, though I am not old enough to crew on missions.

I do fly routinely on O-flights, including what you saw in that thread of my KC-135 Flight, however I also ferry some cadets between islands off the book.

A few of my personal shots:

Granted, we are on PACAFCommand's base, Hickam AFB so we get a lot of unique opportunities, but generally in CAP you get some great experiences you will never find anywhere else. In fact, this coming Friday we are gonna go play around in one of the 737s the generals jet-set around in :)

If you have any questions about the cadet program, feel free to shoot me a line, particularly when it comes to aviation.

Oh, and it is 18 for mission pilot/ aircrew, regardless of personal flying experience.
