Title: Das Boot!!!
Post by: stealth on February 14, 2010, 12:13:25 AM
What we need in the game is submarines. Also task groups should have a kind of sonar to detect them and only have them be able to be at just a couple feet below water. To have there scopes be able to see the enemy task forces.

Maybe as well have a sub for each squad and have sub ports for every couple dozen. The question for me is ed least. What kind of subs U-Boats or Japanese subs and so on?

This just doesn't change the the battles over water but almost everything you'll half to load Lancaster's with depth charges,Give destroyers torpedo toobs and depth charges.Have maybe fuel and oil tankers.

Have not just submarines include battle ships, small carriers, tankers and more. :D

just in case you're not joking logan, Das Boot (Wolfgang Peterson, 1981) is the definitive sub movie, a remarkable piece of work. I'd recommend the 3x100min miniseries version :aok

Do any of you guys asking for subs realize how slow a WWII submarine moves under water and how quick it would be destroyed on the surface by the task groups in AHII?
You guys would die of boredom submerged and probably be clobbered before your torps hit if on the surface, and that's if your torps hit at all.

Just saying...

This is a good point but this almost basically the same as killing a carrier with a Lancaster NOE with the 5inchers manned. In the Sub ed least you got a chance not being detected right away.

Why do some people consistently ask for subs, new weather, etc? HTC knows that you want them, as he probably does too. Stop requesting things that are so blatantly obvious.

Uh no it's not. You're probably not going to even catch the task force submerged and once you do surface you're not much faster than the task force if at all. Not to mention you have one deck gun and torps against the firepower of the whole fleet. You're better off with a PT boat or your NOE Lancs, unless of course you want to spend a whole day or night stalking an enemy task force.

Top speed of the best submarines was only in the low 20 knot range, the fleet in AH2 is well above 30 I believe.

That's why I say we have some ports something like pearl harbor just less defended and have some oil tankers to sink.Just make it in the port kill some tankers while there still in port.

Not so much if spawn points were added just off shore of potential TG targets. Enemy TG shows up at your Port, launch a sub instead of a PT.

Back to subject.I like the sub mostly the U-boat because 1st. There was many movies made about subs like Das Boot,U-571 and so on.2nd So many were made because it played such a good role during WWII.Plus what is WWII with out subs.
Title: Re: Das Boot!!!
Post by: Denholm on February 16, 2010, 11:30:40 PM
Maybe you should read a little more. Submarines (U-boats in particular) would spend days stalking and eventually attacking convoys. You really want to spend days stalking a task group? To add to the level of comparison, the task groups in Aces High travel at 50kts (verified through the AH FV by an aircraft sitting still on the CV). Although this is much faster than any task group in WWII, the task group is still much faster than a submarine which will pull 18kts at best.

Please, enlighten me. If submarines played such a good role in WWII, name one occasion off the top of your head where a submarine caused an astounding upset in the outcome of a battle or the entire war.

The Battle of the Atlantic.  Germany almost strangled England to death with her U-boats, not just in one war but two.  There was also the Battle of the Philippine Sea, in the opening hours of the battle, US submarines sank two Japanese large carriers effectively ruining the IJN's hope of being able to mount any sort of offensive operations for the remainder of the war and killing off of what little remained of the IJN veteran and experienced pilots.

I hate defending Stealth, but that isn't a fair question. Submarines were never designed to control a water way but were instead used to destroy the vital supply lines necessary to a nation. Sure there were a few submarines that successfully attacked and sank capital ships (Royal Oak, Yorktown, Ark Royal, etc) but that isn't their role.

If Germany had focused their efforts on a submarine force and it was large enough to make Donitz happy at war start (300+ boats), I'm certain the Battle of the Atlantic would of forced Britain to seek some peaceful arrangement out of necessity. I am not implying they would surrender, submarines aren't by themselves war winners, you still need something that can dominate/control the water.

However until Aces High gets a merchant fleet to interdict, it is pretty useless for submarines to make an appearance.

edit: too busy at work, AKAK beat me to it.

You're a young kid and I'm envious of you. When I was your age, I would of loved to have games like Aces High but nothing like it existed. Instead, I was making paper airplanes and dipping the lead airplane's tail in gasoline and lighting it so it mimic an aerial dogfight, flames and all.

Its enigma code, used by u-boats to encode messages!!

http://users.telenet.be/d.rijmenants/en/enigmasim.htm (http://users.telenet.be/d.rijmenants/en/enigmasim.htm) you can download an enigma machine here

maybe you can crack the code and read what I really wrote!!  :noid :noid its so controversial I had to encode it....

You would have to use this code to communicate when they bring the u-boat into the game just one spy could get your boat killed and theres always plenty around in the MAs  :noid
