Anyone who saw the Daytona 500 Sunday 2/14 was treated to a good race when it wasn't interupted by a few hours of track repair to a pot hole in the lower racing groove. It's a good thing we had plenty of food and spirits to get us through the "intermission". For an hour and a half we watched as they puttied the hole and used a torch to dry the patch. Meanwhile behind them sat a jet engine on a truck. :headscratch: Imagine the Superbowl was interupted for that long as they filled a sink hole at the 50 yard line. :furious
Well congrats to Jamie Mcmurray in the #1 Pro Bass Shops car taking the Checkers 6 hours after the green flag with Earnhardt Jr. a close second. :salute

They were turning left and avoiding potholes. Just like back in the rum runner days.
I saw it on the news and had a good laugh. I find nascar boring these days. Nothing like it was in the past... too rigid.
-
those last 2 attempts of the G/W/C restarts was what made the wait all the worth while......
nothing though, like Saturday watching Rowdy drive in the nationwide race and then later in the Truck race.....
that Kyle Busch reminds me of "the old days" of petty/pearson or "rusty & dale" or Tim Richmond & Dale"......
and to finally see them go and "Bondo" a pot hole in the asphalt.... of all things.. the Bondo trick worked :aok

I only remember the last few laps. Everything else was just subliminal commericals telling me to buy crap I don't need. But hey, those last few laps were a hoot! They really need to go to the split screen with the commerical on one side. Live race feed on the other.
Harvick seemed to have the best car but thats racing. Those cars were sliding everywhere at 190mph whew!

I think they may be feeling the heat from the loss of fans. They went to a larger restrictor plate and I hear they are going to scrap the rear wing for the old spoiler. They also relaxed the rules on the so-called rough driving they enforced in the past. They have to get the excitement back or they are doomed like the IRL.

Yeah, sometimes you have to listen to the fans. Also they're putting more races back to middays on Sundays. What true nascar fan likes that
dang wing! Need to get rid of that sharkfin on the back suck drafting cars around also.
-
I might find NASCAR interesting if they turned right once in a while. :D
What would be exciting would be if they were to use the real cars off the assembly line. Stock bodies, suspensions, engines and electronics. Interior and glass delete/roll cage and safety equipment/wheels and tires should be the only thing different than factory. Like the good old days: "race on sunday, sell on monday". Mustangs and Camaros and Challengers duking it out. That would be real "stock car" racing.
-

They used to do that on TNT. Guess it made too much sense.
Nice to see the 88 show up.
-
I saw that one commercial said that they were going back to their old roots. They should have just left it and avioded it lol.
Overall the race was awsome, I loved the restricter package that they had on the cars, which kept all of the cars to within 2 seconds of eachother, and they were all insepreble. Also, Goodyear made a good tire for the track and there was only a minor problem with that, but that was because of the gaping hole in the track lol.
Congrats to McMurray, he did an outstanding job, as well as Jr. coming from 10th to 2nd in 1 lap, sounded like his old man there.

Glad the rules are changing back a bit.
Trading paint is a part of stock car racing. Safe or not, it is what it is.
This is the first season in a while that I have been somewhat excited about. It was getting way too antiseptic.

They do. I believe there are two-four races a year where they go race at the road courses? :headscratch: Watkins Glen and Sonoma?

Watkins Glenn and Sanoma is correct.

Mexico City as well, I believe they dropped Sonoma though I might be mistaken.
Nevermind, they dropped Mexico, at least for the Sprint series.......

what amazed me was when harvick gave up position to go hook up with his team mate..........

What's the point of driving 200 laps if only the last 5 actually matter? Why not just have them run 5 crash free laps, pick a winner from that, and call it a day? :)

Do you read only the last chapter of a book? The build up to the end is important as those top ten cars fought all day to be in position to win. They weaved thier way through traffic, avoided the earlier crashes and blowing a tire in "the Black Hole" like Jimmie Johnson did. They had good pit stops, with adjustments and fuel strategy. The dozens of people in the shop and at the race did thier jobs to perfection or they wouldn't have made it 500 miles at 190mph.
-
Actually only the last foot matters, NASCAR racing is about endurance, strategy, skill and among other things luck.
You dont play that out over five laps...

Watkins Glenn and Infineon is correct.
<S>
Fixed
Besides The Glen and Infineon, the Nationwide series also runs at Road America and Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Montreal. Personally, I like watching road races but most tracks are too narrow for good racing. It's all follow the leader.

You need DirecTv's HotPass. It's free and you get split screen with the network feed and the in car video with team radio and telemetry. :aok

well, I have longed for the day I see someone do what Rusty Wallace did at Richmond back in 90? 91? ( may have been earlier ) where he was 6 laps down and raced his way back to the lead lap and won the race......
lot of Kyle Busch dis-likers out there, but Mike helton telling him to keep on doing what he does and not to change at the Nationwide Champ. banquet and now Nascar saying they putting it back in the Driver's hands.....hopefully we will see some exciting racing this year.....
anyhows.... lets see what happens next weekend......
rpm, They always interchange Infineon & Sonoma all the time..... Infineon is in Sonoma......just saying
-
rpm, Infineon is in Sonoma......
Ya think?

A good drag race lasts under 10 seconds, and it's exciting as hell. :aok
I'm biased. I think cars should turn both directions, with the sole exception of the STP Lotus turbine cars (best oval track cars ever). When you start watching factory series, those races are all generally short. Mazda, Ferrari, BMW, etc. Not many laps, just a fast shoot-out. I find a hot lap qualifier followed by a short race shoot-out to be fun to watch. Everything tends to be hyper-aggressive, which you just don't see on long races until.. the last 5 laps.

My feelings on NASCAR is summed up perfectly right here :D

Sanoma=Infineon, Sanoma is the location of Infineon. You will hear the annoucers say Sanoma all of the time.

it's called merchandising. The sponsers pay big money and want air time.

Infineon raceway is in Sonoma California, was formally known as Sears point raceway, im going there for the Fathers day race in June i cant wait, its a nice drive from central oregon

one of my favorite things in nascar(when i used to watch it all the time) was when they took them to watkins glen(i think?) and there was another road course......
it was a BLAST watching them throw those cars around those road courses.
i love drag races...........

your thinking of the old Trans-Am series

So wait, you mean Danica hasn't saved NASCAR yet?
(Not that I even care about NASCAR in the first place, but with all the attention by the sports media you'd think it was the frelling Second Coming).
-
FYI, ARCA and Nationwide audience was up 60% with Danica in the field.
Strip
-
I did not know NASCAR was in need of saving........ it is the only Sport that pulls in over 100,000+ in audience in person, let alone those watching on TV, every weekend...year after year...... and for places like Indianapolis, I was there the Inaugural Race and it was sold out over 480,000+ with the city being overwhelmed with another 100,000+ beyond that.....
The media is what causes all the hipe about everything from positive to negative....... if the media did not put their spin on things, it would be even better ( my opinion of course )
Danica did good, her first outing...... and yes, she will just help the sport grow more and bring more fans to the table for all 4 major series....
-
I think with the new rule changes (bringing rubbin back) will help there ratings alot, the sprint series needs something to make it more lively, rather than the robot like drivers it wants them to be, people that get into the race and aren't afraid to tell it like it is ( tony stewart is good for this hehe) that's what racing was is and always was about, i know all the sponsors heaven forbid there drivers says something wrong, but its a start of something new i hope this was only the first race, the next few weeks will tell much better, Ive been watching nascar for well over 30 years and when winston dropped out the whole series has really changed, verdicts out on wither its for the better.
As far as the nationwide series goes i think Danica will do fairly well, she shows good patience and driving talent, but the problem with the nationwide series is the Sprint cup drivers taking alot of the race postions and eliminating alot of the lesser dollar up and coming teams who are trying to get a foothold into the series, which i think is unfair and Nascar should address that issue, its not like theres not enough up and coming teams/drivers to Field 43 cars, many go home due to the fact sprint series drivers out qualified them.

I wonder how....

:D
In seriousness, best of luck to her. She's going to have even MORE of a spotlight on her now than before, if that's even possible. Like I said, I'm not a race fan and have no idea what the difference between all the series are and most of what I know about NASCAR came from watching Days of Thunder maybe once, but from what I've read about her she's got the legitimate ability and the aggressiveness to succeed. I know there's been a few accusations that she was just the next Anna Kournakova flash-in-the-pan and nothing but an over hyped pretty face, but IIRC a LOT of her failures on the track was the result of some pretty bad luck and not a reflection on her actual skill as a driver.
I do think that they should let her back off the leash, though. I got a kick reading about the pint-sized fireball prepared to throw down with guys twice her size if they knocked her into a wall. I still don't get why that level of competitiveness was a BAD thing. Bob Gibson would knock a batter on his bellybutton so much as look at him, and he's CELEBRATED for it. If Danica has the--for want of a better phrase--balls to get in the face of someone that much bigger than her I say let her go for it.
-
They have already said viewership for the Nationwide Series was up 60% with Danica. I can't find any problems with anyone participating in NASCAR.
Yeah, Danica is a brand name and is going to draw her own crowd. Who doesn't want to see her in Victory Lane getting a wet t-shirt?
-
More than 50% of Nascar Fans are women and it's one of the few sports women can compete with men equally. They say women can relate to driving a car more than playing football or baseball.
Danica is hot and that will translate into endorsments. $$$$$$$$$$ Nike and others are leaving Tiger and need to find a new cat to represent them. Tiger had a bad 18 "holes".

Heya Saxman,
noticed the SI pic you posted. check out her video shoots of her Swim wear on SI.com....... both 2008 & 2009 video shootings......
as for her spunkyness........ back in the Indy 500 Race ( thinkit was the 09 race ( may have been the 08 Race? ) she was taken out coming off of pitroad........ she got out of her Indycar and was heading to the driver that ran into her, and fixin to open a can of "whipass" on him.but they grabbed her and walked her away back thru the pits from him......
she is agressive and spunky........ now back to her ARCA debute...... once she got rubbed and spun on the front stretch......she came back and had already gained the confidence to get up there and really bump draft along with rubbing/bumping fenders with Ricky Carmicheal going for the finish line.......
I know their are alot of people who don;t like the roundy round of stock car racing....... but for me, my Mom grew up and went to School with Richard Childress, back in the 70's & 80's when Winston was the primary sponsor of Nascar, I had over 40 relatives who worked for RJR, and I got free tickets all the time, pit passes, you name it...... My dad would sit for long periods of time back in the 60's early 70's with the Petty's at their Race Shop & Maurice Petty would teach him how to build Plymouth/Dodge Motors and tune them..... down in level cross......
in late 80's/early 90's I had the pleasure of doing HVAC design and work on Both of Earnhardt's new House & then later was came to and asked to designed Rusty's system for his new Custom home.... I did the original work for Childress's now Truck ( was originally Busch Cars shop in Welcome ), I did the work for one of Hendricks Race Engine shops back when he was all over the place ( had shops in mooresville, charolette, winston-Salem , etc...) was given a set of Hendrick Motorsports Racing Valve Covers as a gift when I got the AC turned on :aok ....... around here where I live.... you could walk in to Curly's BarBeQue and sit right beside people like Richard childress, chocolate Myers, Junior Johnson, Bill elliot, Kirk Shelmerdine ( list goes on ) and chat it up like everyday neighbors...... nothing out of the ordinary like the wa "Race Fans" act when they see a Driver or Nascar person.....
I have had my joys of driving around Charlotte Motor Speedway with average speed of 155+ ( was hitting 185/188 in the straight aways ).I had several runs but my longest was a 25 lapper.... got it all on video VHS back in 95....... The Car I drove was even in tracy Larwence's "Good Die Young" country video. was an Arca Car Black #4 Oldsmobile.....
so it is kind of how one grows up and what they grow up doing.........
if any of you have watched History channel. look for "Madouse" is a new series showing a local "very old" circle track and modified Racing..... the guys in that show series are people I grew up with and around in my earlier years up until I was around mid twentys, and ol Junior Miller once Tee- Boned me at the local Amusement Go-Cart Track one time, completely launching me out of the car......( he did get pay back though ).....
Junior Miller has raced in the Daytona Dash series back in the day, but is just an old salty racer these days.......
Nascar is in the blood kind of.......... and yes my family roots ... lot of family members were Shine Runners back long ago......
times have really changed a whole lot from then to now........
sorry for rambling.........

I love that sort of fire. First I think it makes her even hotter, (if she's explosive on the track, she must be no less hot in other areas off it, right?) and it's just awesome to see that despite her size she's not afraid to tear into anyone. I don't know if she's REALLY that hot-tempered or if she just feels the need to act tough because she's a woman in a male-dominated sport, (I REALLY hope it's the former) but I was sort of disappointed when I read she was toning things down.
Ultimately, there's a line between being a fiery competitor and just being a jerk, but the former are just so much fun to WATCH.

sorry for rambling.........
Good stories TC. My aunt used to work for Harry Gant's team back in the early 80's. I'd go up to the shop in Denver, NC and visit. I remember my first race, the International 500 at Charlotte, in October of 1982. Saw Dale Sr. driving his own hauler back to the shop after the race. Pretty wild watching the sport mature like that. My great uncle used to drive with Lee Petty and those guys back in the '50s until he hurt his arm and had to give it up. Its a great, grassroots sports, especially here in NC. I'm glad to see the new rules and the prospect of Danica driving--both will help the sport going forward.
Anyway, cheers...
