Title: Pulled one out of my Hat
Post by: Getback on February 16, 2010, 04:26:10 PM
Mom's monitor wasn't displaying anything when the computer was turned on. My first thought was that the monitor was bad. So I grabbed an old CRT and headed over there. However, when I unplugged the monitor from the computer the monitor displayed, "Signal lost". Meaning that the monitor was good and also indicating something serious is wrong. I gave a big oh no! One thing that intrigued me was that the top cd drive kept flashing as if trying to access a cd. I took a pin and pushed it through the hole to get the tray to pop out. There was no cd in it but it flashed anyway. Then I thought I would reset the cmos. But Mom couldn't find the jumper that came with it.

I then started thinking about the hard drive and the OS. Now I don't know much about this stuff and work with what little knowledge I do have. I remembered that when a computer is first turned on the OS checks the peripheral devices to see if they are okay. Then I thought, is the OS getting stuck on that old CD drive. So I unplugged the cd power and data cables. Yessssssssssssssssss it worked!

One happy Mom!!

You gotta love it when your parents think you are god sometimes...then you get the ones that you would rather shoot with a shotgun to fix 'em.
